I cut up a pomegranite to put in my salad last night. OMG, I can't get the stains out of my shirt. This is worse than red wine or beet juice.

Does anyone have any tips for removing the stains, or a tip on how to cut them without the juice staining everything in sight? I had to use Comet to scrub the countertop, it stained immediately on contact. :scared1:

try soaking the shirt in hydrogen peroxide. That stuff works wonders.

Soak in Oxyclean and HOT water for a few days.

I feel your pain... I love pomegranates, but they're so messy!

Tide pen for the clothing stains. You might have to treat it a few times, but they work miracles. My roommate had a whole glass of red wine spilled on an expensive white skirt and got it out a day later with a Tide pen. I don't have any direct stories about pomegranate, but I'd imagine it would work.

For getting the seeds out without making a mess, the best method I've found is to fill a bowl with cold water, score the pomegranate along the skin in quarters, then submerge it in the water while you take it apart so the juice doesn't splatter. The other advantage of this is that the thin white bits inside will float to the top of the bowl, so you can just skim them off and then drain the seeds.

When I've had a bad fruit stain (think raspberries or cherries), this is what works for me...

Pour boiling water through the stain (have it over a sink).

Yeah, I know it sounds odd, but I got some cherry juice on a shirt this summer and a friend told me to try the boiling-water method...and it worked! A good rule of thumb for stains is use organic to get out organic, like I would use aerosol hair-spray(something man-made) to get out ink (man-made). If I'm desperate I've used bleach on stained items even when the care instructions said not to...after all, with the stain it's unwearable, so why not try something so I can wear the item again? Oh, and another cleaning method is to make up a lemon-juice & salt paste, put that on the stain and stick the item out in the sun (it's especially great on white linen or lace tablecloths).

Oh, and if you can find some "Wine-Away", which is sold in Trader Joe's and in wine shops, that stuff might work too.

Good luck,
agnes!

that under water method sounds great :thumbsup2

I use Stain Stick on everything. The spray doesn't work so well, but if you'll hit it with a layer of Stain Stick and let it set for 30 min or more, it ought to get it out. Oh, and in the future wear an apron or a plastic garbage bag.

Try oxyclean on your clothes.

We open our pomegranite in a bowl of water like Belle09. It really really helps oodles in cutting down juice accidents.

I think I will post a pic of me in the garbage bag next time!:lmao:

I always you renu for contact lens, it takes red wine out of white carpets!! It breaks down proteins, and the stuff works wonders!! I always keep a trail size bottle around!

Trader Joe's is one of my favorite stores, I'll have to look for it next time :thumbsup2

Note: OxiClean is nothing but a powder that converts to hydrogen peroxide in a sufficiently hot solution, they add a little detergent and optical brighteners (the blue bits) to it, but the hydrogen peroxide is what treats the stain and it's much cheaper to just buy it. Don't go over the household 3% dilution.

I'm not the laundry expert in our house, so I can't help you here. Sorry. But the advice I can offer when cutting one next time, lay down a piece of wax paper on a cutting board. Sprinkle some powdered sugar over the wax paper. The powdered sugar will absorb and any excess juice. Simply fold up the wax paper when you're done and throw away.

Cool, I didn't know that.

FTR, last time I tried Oxy-Clean, I had a really bad allergic reaction on my skin to it, itchy patches that wouldn't heal. And all my clothes had been washed with the stuff (I was trying something *new*...oh goody), so it took a long time for my skin to clear up. (Also, I didn't figure out what was going on until it was too late.)

What about the splatter when the knife pierces the skin? You are so cute, but I think the underwater method would work better :flower3::flower3:
