Quick question. When the studios were put in the long houses, did they use the original footprint of the existing rooms, or did they gut the area, and put in studios that are larger than the original rooms. Just curious.

I almost recall they were gutted... But keep the same room size (due to balconies?)
The DVC longhouses had some of the larger Poly rooms by sqft

With the 2nd semi-bath the usable room is much smaller then the original Poly room.

When we stayed there last June I didn't think space was an issue at all. We've only stayed at BCV since joining (AKV in 26 days YAY!!) but I would say Poly compares favorably in size to that. Everything I hear is that Poly is actually the 2nd largest studios after OKW. And we found the 2nd shower to be awesome even with just a family of 3.

Thanks. There was a FB discussion about the size, but I couldn't remember what I had read when they were being built. Someone thought they would be very small, but I remembered people here, saying the studios were a good size.

I stayed in a Poly studio for the first time in March ( and will back in November). I think the studio is much bigger than the other two DVC studios I have stayed at in AKV Jambo and BWV.

Same here, I was there in May with 2 friends. Plenty of room and we each had our own bed (one friend liked the Murphy bed).

We loved the Poly studios and found them large (have stayed at all Florida DVC's except SSR & VGF).....so large, in fact, that my DH thought they weren't "cozy enough..like BLT".

The poly studios are 460+ sq ft. The BLT studios are 336sq ft.

The other are in between.

We loved the poly and will be going back in december. We own at BLT and refuse to stay in their studios... Tho we love their 1bds!

The used the same foot print, keep in mind that the rooms at the Poly were all built using a modular system and they were put together like concrete blocks, each room was a block. The walls between the rooms are the same. Only the walls within each room were gutted.

My understanding is that the three long houses they used were not built modularly, they were the three later long houses. They also did take out the walls. I think where they did keep stuff the same was the plumbing.

They could have had 1 and 2BRs but chose not to.

That is my understanding also. The longhouses were completely gutted and you could se the entire length was my understanding from a post from Tikiman.

I loved the Poly studio, but I think the bathroom layout is weird. I also think it is a bummer there are no 1BR or 2BR units available. I hope to stay there again someday, loved the grounds, location, and Trader Sam's!

So if the plumbing had to stay the same then the 1 and 2 BRs would have been double or triple the size of the current rooms 447 square feet of a studio. Except, they must have added some plumbing as the hotel rooms didn't have a kitchenette nor the second bathroom. Maybe they knew no one would pay the point cost per night for those even more expensive yet larger villas. Besides the 2 BRs would compete with the even more expensive Bungalows.

Well, Kidani 1BRs are ~875 square feet, so having a 1BR double the size of a studio wouldn't be at all out of line.

Poly Studios have similar pricing to VGF Studios, so short of Ridiculous Bungalows, you'd think the pricing would mirror VGF. We'll have to see what the room types and points look like at CCV.

Yes, they would have had to change the plumbing for the new bathroom config and the kitchenette and I don't think they needed to keep that the same. It would have been done like Jambo where they modified hotel rooms into the suites. And they had just completed selling VGF for similar prices and it has the normal villa configs with 1BR's and 2BR's so I don't know why they would have thought the price would be concerning. My opinion is that there were probably a few things that came into play in the decision to do studios only along with the Bungalows but mostly about the best return. I'd guess that a lot had to do with occupancy in that studios sleep the same in half the space as 1BR's. And the higher the occupancy the hotel side can allocate more common area expenses to DVC so I don't think they would have wanted to potentially decrease it. A studio sleeps 5 in 1 room. The new 1BR's sleep 5 in 2 rooms instead of the possible 10 people that could have been there. And then the new 2BR's sleep 9 in 3 rooms so still a lower average where they could have had up to 15 in the same space. I also think they had thoughts they could "get away" with all studios and could sell to all the Poly lovers who were used to hotel rooms only. Larger villas can mean more cooking in the rooms so eliminate the kitchen and your restaurants are busier. And then more people in the rooms that are a short monorail ride away from MK. All some of the reasons I could see them deciding on only studios and most have little to do with the construction part where they could have done whatever they wanted.

But the patios/balconies are fixed and were not changed. So the rooms are still the same size as before.

Walking to my room in Tokelau, I kept thinking, "these hallways are really, really wide". I think I would have preferred room on each side getting an extra foot of that wide hallway.

The poly halls were always wide, must be some fire regulation. It does seam like a waste of space.

It would be interesting to see the timeline and reasonings behind those key decisions.

At one point, Tikiman was hearing of plans with 1 or 2 GFV sized buildings (designed like Aluani)
