Polynesian Room Noise

We just got back from the Poly and I had a question. Our room had an adjoining door to another room and it was very noisy. We could hear the family next door and late at night we could even hear the tv show they were watching. It was very loud. Are all rooms like this? I guess I could ask for a non adjoining room next time. If all rooms are insulated as poorly for noise we may try the Contemporary for our next visit.

All rooms with a connecting door (any resort) can be loud like that if you have loud neighbors.

I find that the noise in a Poly room, like most other hotels, is entirely dependent on the people in the rooms around you. Some stays have been really quiet & sometimes not so much.

I agree - Quiet stays have nothing to do with resorts. It really comes down to location of a room within a resort + if you have an adjoining room + LUCK if you have noisy neighbors. It can happen at a Deluxe as easily as a Value. Insulation isn't going to make any difference if you are sharing a door with an loud family.

That's true. I think we'll just ask for a non joining room since I can't request a quiet family ;)
It honestly doesn't bother me unless it interferes with sleep and in this case it did.

One other tip - regardless of where you choose to stay for your next trip - Speaking from experience - request a non-pool facing view. The only thing worse than a noisy neighbor, is a pool full of screaming folks at 1:00am.

It doesn't matter the hotel, every time I've been in a connecting room (Poly being one of them but not the only one), I've been able to hear the family next door, as if they were in my room. The noise seeps through the door frame. I'm thinking that next time, I will request a non-connecting room.

One of the main reasons we changed rooms (paid to upgrade to do so) at our recent Grand Floridian visit is that we originally had a room with a connecting door and we could hear EVERYTHING the people next door did or said.

I don't think they were particularly rude or noisy or anything of the sort. I think the hotels' connecting door system are poorly built and badly insulated.

They SEEMED to be having normal conversations (not yelling, I mean), yet I could tell you what that family was doing every day. Where they were eating, who they were meeting and what TV shows they watched before bed. They might be able to say the same about me.

The deal breaker, for me, was that they also had a baby, which, as babies tend to do, woke up in the middle of the night crying, multiple times. Which also meant I woke up. And my son. (Not a baby.) Multiple times. Fun!

Again, I'm not blaming the family, but I was really unhappy that Disney charges upwards for $500/night for rooms where you can hear people carrying on conversations next door ... And then told me the only way I could move was if I wanted to pay an outrageous amount to upgrade. After further discussion and time a "complimentary" move was offered, as was a more reasonable upgrade cost to a slightly larger room (instead of a suite, in another building no less, which was all they originally said they had ... And wanted another $700/night for). We ended up going with the larger, deluxe room and paying a bit more for (>$75 more per night).

We've had some rather long stays at the Poly, BC and CR and always have had connecting rooms. We've had noisy neighbors and quiet ones while staying in the same room. Some families seem to have voices that carry more than others at conversation volume. I haven't noticed that much of a difference in the various resorts. I have found that folding a towel and blocking the space at the bottom of the connecting door helps some.

The room we had with a connecting door was horrible...our neighbors had teenagers and they were obnoxiously loud

The other thing is the hallways...we were in the Hawaii bldg the week before Thanksgiving and the closer we got to the holiday the worse the running up and down the halls were, not to mention the screeching and yelling in the hall

As others have said, it doesn't matter at what resort you are staying or what price you are paying, it's the people, not the structure. If I am bothered by neighbors who are just plain loud, I either call them on the phone and ask them to turn the TV down or I simply go over to that room and ask them in person. About 99.9% of the time, the people just don't realize how loud they are or that they are bothering others.

And I've been on the other end of this dilemma too. My in-laws cannot watch a TV show without the volume being just short of ear blasting. I would welcome someone knocking on our door or calling our room and telling us to turn the darn thing down. And if our grandkids get too loud when we take them, I want someone to come and tell us about it. It's not being mean - everyone has to realize there are other people around them.

It is not necessarily connecting rooms with doors. We were there in July in the Samoa longhouse (non-connecting rooms) and it sounded like someone was being murdered next door. Luckily for me (in a room with DW and 2 DDs), the “murder” only lasted around 15 minutes and they were gone in a couple of days. :worship:

I agree. We stayed in a connecting room at POFQ once and the people connected to us sounded like they were right in our room!! They kept us all up until like midnight when they FINALLY decided to go to bed. (sigh) The next day, we changed our room....and had no more problems after that.
However, we have started staying in Villas now and have had no problems with noise in those ever...

Had to laugh at your story! One time we were staying in the CR many years ago and the family next door who had been quiet for our three prior nights kept us up all night with a screaming child. We tossed and turned and put pillows over our heads and finally got up early to catch our plane and leave. As we were closing our door to depart we ran into the tired father holding his sleepy baby over his shoulder. He apologized over and over; "Paccy disappeared." Evidently no one in their room got any sleep either! We were a little aggravated but certainly empathized!

I agree. We had an adjoining room at Poly, and when I saw our new neighbours I thought oh no. It was a family with a baby & toddler. We never heard anything.

Only on one stay did we hear our neighbours, who were very loud and had no regard for those around them. Good thing they moved in on our last day! I would have been asking to be moved if I had to put up with them for my entire stay. They let their kids scream, and run up and down the outside walkway shreaking, slamming door, in & out of the room, etc. Truly the neighbour from hell.

I stuck my head out the door once and the mom asked "is there a problem?" yikes!
