I'm making reservations for my family to stay at the Poly for the first time, pretty sure garden view. My question is should I request a certain building or just wait and see what we get? We will most likely be happy no matter where we are. Is it possible to get a surprise upgrade easier without a specific request? Also when checking in should you ask for a nice view or possible upgrade before or after your told your room number and building? Not sure of the proper etiquette and not sure I'd have the nerve to ask anyway. We will have a car so is it a very far walk to some buildings from the parking lot or won't it really matter? Thanks for any advice or info.

We stayed at the Poly last Feburary in a garden view room in the Tokalau building. Our location was great, we had a view of the quiet pool and if you looked around the corner of our balcony, you could see Cinderella Castle--that's a nice wake-up call. :D

As for asking for upgrades, we usually ask as they are checking us in, if they have upgrades available to pay for, at that point they usually offer them complimentary. We have always been offered free upgrades at every resort we've stayed at, but I think the CM's assume we're on our honeymoon. DH & I are both young (27 and 25), have no children, and usually travel Sunday-Sunday. Not a bad deal. :D

You will love the Poly, it's my favorite resort, so laid-back and relaxing. Have a great time!

I stayed at the Polynesian in 2002 and really enjoyed it. I was in the Tokelau building in room #1913, which is considered a "garden" view, but I had a much better view. You could see the beach, lagoon & Grand Floridian. One morning I woke up to hot air balloons over the GF. Here is a link to some of the pictures of my room and the view http://tikiman2001.homestead.com/tokelau.html. I found this to be a great location, quiet and a quick walk to almost everything. I indicated that I would prefer this room when I made my original ressie, faxed a room request (again with this room #) 4 days prior, then confirm the reservation the night before I arrived directly with the Polynesian. The CM was very nice and although he said he could not give me the exact room number, he did say that I got what I had requested.

We have stayed the past 2 years at the Poly and loved it. We did request a room close to the GCH due to our oldest son having a very mild form of epilepsy and wanted somewhere close to everything. We were in Niue-2nd floor the first year and Samoa-3rd floor this past year, both facing the volcano pool. We had a wonderful view and could see the electric water parade from our room in the Samoa building. I had faxed my request in this past year, but apparently they did not receive it or could not find it. They were very helpful in fulfilling our request. As for the walk from your room to the parking lot, everything at the Poly is very close and maybe a 5 minute walk at most, unless you are located in a building closest to the TTC. If you do fax in a request, make sure to take your copy of your fax with you. The CM's at the Poly are great and it is one of our favorite places to stay. Make sure to have dinner at O'Hana's-the food is the best!

Thank you all for the great info. Decisions, decisions :D I can't decide if I should hope for a view of the lagoon or just request a view of the monorail, which I love watching. I think all the rooms seem to have nice views of either the lagoon, pool, monorail or beautiful garden. As long as we aren't staring directly at the parking lot it seems we can't go wrong.
I am looking forward to eating at Ohana's. I've always wanted to stay at the Poly and I think DH and DD's will love it.
