I decided NOT to request a specific building and let the Disney Magic work instead. I DID want to be near a pool, preferrably on a first floor, and we paid for GV.
We arrived around 9am. They said they had a room ready now in Tokelau on the 3rd floor OR we could wait for a 1st floor room in Somoa, which is between both pools. It would be ready after 3pm. We decided to wait for Somoa. We went to the parks and THEN I remembered they just finished remodeling that building so we were feeling pretty good about our choice.
When we returned and checked in we were very happy with our room. We've stayed at BC the last 2 visits and this room is noticably bigger. We were on the quiet pool side and I rarely saw anyone swimming in that pool. The GCH and both pools were extrememly close. The map you see online makes the place look MUCH MORE spread out than it actually is. These buildings are very close together so the walk is nothing. Somoa is right in the middle of everything. I feel it's a perfect location and it's non-smoking.
My 6 year old DS loved the wildlife we saw there, a baby bunny, ducks and birds that came by the patio to munch, lizards, etc. For lizard haters, don't worry, they were small and frightened. There was one bird, some kind of small crane maybe, that had only one foot. We liked him.
Everyone has been talking on the boards lately about mosquitoes. My DH and DS attract them like magnets and neither had one bite the whole trip. And we walked around, sat by the beach at night, ate lunch by the pool, swam and went to the parks. NOT ONE BITE! I did not see a bug of any sort.
This resort was NOT crowded (May 19-21) at all. We went to the pool one morning and there was maybe a dozen people swimming in the volcano pool. We had our pick of chairs. The rooms were quiet as well.
My DHloved the food options. Ohana's was a real treat! I'm glad I read about it online! After we checked in my DH walked around to check the place out and came back excited about Captian Cooks. Several times a day he would go to the coolers there and drool over the selection they had in there, salads, fruit salads, desserts, etc. You name it, they had it. The pineapple was excellent! We splurged to stay here at all so we were happy to find this reasonably price food option and the grill is open til 11pm so that came in handy one night. We took the food to our room that night and ate in. They have very good chicken fingers and I often ordered the kids meal. It came with fries or fruit.
Of course the monorail was awesome! We rode it all often.
About the construction, the ONLY time I noticed it was when we drove past it as we arrived and again as we departed. Our building was not all that close to it so while we were on the grounds it was no bother and I never heard a peep from it.
I made a PS for a character breakfast at Ohana's. I wanted Chef Mickey's but didn't call soon enough to get in. Since the monorail is right there we ran over to Chef Mickey's the day of our PS a half-hour early to see if we could walk in. If not we would ride back over to the Poly and keep our PS. To my pleasant surprise we got RIGHT IN! I can't guarantee that for everyone and I felt really bad because there were many people sitting around the entry there. We sat and waited for maybe 2-5 min and then was seated. I was shocked! My DS loved it and it allowed my DH to sleep in for the long drive home that day. After my son hugged Mickey he wiped tears of joy from his eyes. That face was priceless!
We did not get towel animals but it was our own fault. With a 2 night stay there is really only one morning you get your room cleaned for you. I left a tip and everything but I walked in on housekeeping after being at the pool. She said she was finished and left quickly, I'm sure to give me my privacy. I told her I was going to jump in the shower and I was hoping she would leave at least one but she did not. Oh well, maybe next time. My hubby wanted to find her to ask her to leave one for my son but I begged him not to because they are supposed to be a treat, not to be expected! Unfortunately I am too well read on this hotel.
SO, we all LOVED the Poly. Did I mention I surprised my family? I originally booked the CR but changed it later and they didn't know I did that. I told my hubby about 1 hr before we arrived and told my son after we pulled in and he said "this doesn't look like our hotel!" Both of them loved the change. I changed it mainly for my hubby who said he wanted a hotel more "resort-like" and less "hotel-like". We only stayed 2 nights. But afterwards I asked them if they liked the Poly better than CR (since we visited for breakfast). They both liked the Poly better. I asked my DH which he liked better, the Poly or BC. He said they were equal but he loved Captain Cooks better than Beaches & Cream. It's hard to top and 8ft long fridge packed with good food, ready to grab 24 hrs a day. And Beaches & Cream always seemed crowded.
There is a lot of talk about the look being "dated". I feel the decor is very authentic. We thought it was "dated" a couple years ago when we walked through but once you check in, building colors don't matter much anymore. The rooms aren't orange and brown inside. The atmosphre is very relaxing and tranquil and I felt I was somewhere very tropical, tho I was just in FL. My DS wanted to go to Hawaii for vacation and there is NO WAY we could do that, so we did this instead. He was thrilled! He's usually very quiet but he talked our heads off this trip, he was so excited about everything!
If you're trying to pick between BC and the Poly I would focus on location. They are pretty far apart and near different parks. If you are trying to pick a building, relax, they all have good points to them. I would not want to be next to the construction wall but other than that, they are all nice.
And for those of you counting down....have fun....and Aloha!
