Why are there no second floor balconies at some of the longhouses at the poly? I dont understand why a building would be designed that way. Anybody know? :Pinkbounc

Apparently when they originally designed the resort they wanted it in the style of traditional polynesian longhouses with no balconies. The newer longhouses have balconies - they realised people wanted balconies in their rooms!

THe original longhouses were designed to be like traditional longhouses which would not have anything on the exterior. They did decide to move away from that design at the end of construction and added them to the 3rd floor but because of how they were constructed they could not support balconies along the second floor also. Even during this last construction done to the original longhouses they looked again at adding the balconies to the second floor and a structural engineer told them they would have to reconstruct the entire longhouse.

The newer longhouses that have them were built completely different.

Don't know but think it might have been to make them look more authentic. With the newer buildings, I imagine they realized the demand for a balcony outweighed aesthetics?

Anyway, lots of hotels don't offer balconies. Think of all the rooms at the S/D without them. Marriotts, Hyatts, etc.. Of course the moderates and value hotels at WDW don't have them either.

OOps, just saw Tikiman's explanation.
