Poll for an English Assignment

We only lock our doors if we are going out, or going to sleep. Sometimes we leave the house unlocked if we are just stepping out really quickly, like to the corner store.
After watching "Bowling for Columbine" I got the impression that he meant Canadians leave their doors unlocked when they are at home. All the houses he entered had people at home. So for those of you who always lock the door, does that include when you are at home during the daytime? I know a few people who do that, but most of my friends and family do not.

I lock them at night but never during the day or if im just going out for a bit I wont lock them.

My door is ALWAYS locked. I have locked out my hubby while bringing in groceries!:lmao: I don't even think about it, just habit. My car doors are always locked when I am in it. I live in a moderate size town.

Doors in our house are always locked if we aren't home and at night. I also always lock my car.

I lock my doors at night, and when away, but during the day when I am in, it is sometimes unlock. I will admit that I have woken up in the morning to find that I have forgotten sometimes, though. I was broken into in 2000, between 8 and 9 in the morning. One neighbour saw the truck pull in and thought that I was having a friend visit. After it was over, the humour was that my neighbour got an alarm system and I didn't.

Words of wisdom form my dad

"A lock door only keeps an honest man out."

Generally keep the doors locked to the house, backyard gate, garage and the cars. We live in the Greater Toronto Area in a 40 +plus year old neighbourhood in the suburb of Mississauga 700,000 population.

"Locked doors keep out honest people"

As for Mr Moore's Bowling for Columbine, like a lot of documentaries and reality shows it is "cooked".

The shooting and editing are skewed to present a certain opinion or perspective.

Our doors are locked when we are out and unlocked when we are home. Even though we live in a big city, our neighbourhood is a safe area. It's better to be safe than sorry! But lets face, if "they" want in - they will.

We live in the suburbs of the capital, Ottawa, population about 800,000 depending on what you count.

Doors are always locked at night, or when we are all out. Doors often left unlocked during the day, if any of our kids are out. If my wife and I are out, we tell our daughters to lock the doors.

When I was a teenager/early twenties, back in the late 70s/early 80's, we never locked our doors. We lived in London, Ontario, a ctiy of about 200,000 at that time. There were 3 males, plus my mother, and two dogs, so we felt quite safe.

We live in a small town just outside Ottawa, and we generally keep our doors locked. I do it without even thinking, but my husband isn't as religious about it as I am, especially during the day.

I'm in Winnipeg. My doors are unlocked during the day and locked at night. The only reason they are locked at night is because of a story in the U.S. where that little girl was taken from her bed at night at her grandmother's, I believe, and then killed. I have 2 little girls.

I grew up in a rural area and our doors were hardly ever locked in those 18 years. Maybe only if our entire family was away for a few days, but still probably not most of those times.

My doors are always locked, even when I am home. The exception is of course if I am in the backyard in the summer, I will leave my back door open and unlocked (obviously) only if I am right in the yard. If I venture to a neighbour's yard, I will lock the door. I live in a townhouse complex. My nieghbour was broken into because she takes the screens out of her window in the summer and leaves windows wide open. She still does after the break in.

I do not live in the best area, however, I have always locked the door when I am home. This goes back to being a child, and a drunken man walking into our apartment one day while we were watching tv. :scared1:

Even when I lived in a nice neighbourhood the door is ALWAYS locked. My main floor windows are locked at night too, even in summer, but will open the upper windows when I am home. BTW, I live in Kitchener, Ontario.

We live about 5 miles from a large town and 20 miles from Fredericton New Brunswick (Our provinces capital city pop 60,000 )and the last time we locked the door to our house was when we where away to WDW I never lock my car and most times i leave the key in it( because i have a thing about loosing car keys )all most all the houses here are on 1 acre lots so our neighbors are close but not to close

Hope this helps

I live in a busy University town in Ontario and most of my doors are always locked. The only one I leave open while I'm home during the day is my side door which is used for my daycare - if I take the kids out or head out to the school it gets locked though.

I lock my house doors all the time.

I lock my car doors all the time.

I live in a suburb of Toronto....large population.

I'm just extra careful.

However, I used to live in New York and there is a different in attitude between NY folks and Canadian folks.....I lived in Montreal, Winnipeg and Vancouver too.

I admire your project and your teacher's inititive. Good for you all! Blessings, Sandra

I live downtown Toronto - my doors are always locked... I have the mental hospital up the street and a halfway home a block away the other way. however, my parents live in the sticks, a few hours from here - they rarely lock their doors. Maybe at night?

I grew up just outside of Belleville and I couldn't tell you if we locked the door all the time? I don't think so...

Maybe it's an urban vs. rural thing?

When we lived outsite of Toronto I locked my doors when I went out and at night. Now we live in a rural area in a very small town and the only time I lock them is when we are going out of town for the night and at night when I go to bed. I rarely lock my van doors when I'm home but I do when I'm out.

We live in a small rural town outside of Ottawa, and always lock our doors. Part of the reason - DH and I both grew up in Toronto! So, there is always fear of what happens when you don't lock your doors... Keep in mind we also have four dogs, and even with them... I still would not trust the house unlocked.

However, many of my neighbours do not lock their houses or cars during the day or night.
