Not a bash on Bush ;) I'm genuinely curious about something. A new Zogby poll just released found this:

Zogby also found that voters holding passports preferred Kerry 58 percent to 35 percent for Bush. Voters without passports favored Bush 48-39 percent.

I'm honestly curious to hear opinion on this from both sides...I'll reserve my own comment for now until I hear what others think of this result.

Isn't that odd? I have my opinion as to why but I'm not going to say it and get flamed! Let me just say that I have a passport and I am voting for Kerry. My mother, my two sisters, my niece and nephew and their spouses...all the same. Interesting, eh?

Hmmm....I'm not sure that the fact that I'm a passport holder really influences my decision to vote for Kerry, but it certainly is interesting to know!

Perhaps because world travelers (assuming that the people with their passports actually use their passports), having seen different cultures and countries, are more interested in maintaining good relations with said countries? Dunno.....just a thought!

I think BedKnobbery got it.

I think my passport expired. Not sure. :yo-yo:

No not really.
Ok, you either 1) don't follow politics (in which case, no, you probably wouldn't find any political poll interesting) or 2) are a Bush supporter offended by something.....though what it is I have no idea.

I didn't make it up, the poll is available on Yahoo's front page....So what is the reason for such a wide discrepency ?

(And bedknobbery...that's along the lines of what I was thinking as well, though I also would argue that people who have travelled have a better understanding of just how small a place the world actually is, and how our actions, as Americans, can have such a serious impact on other areas of the world.)

Does it measure whether the passport had ever been used? Where they liked to travel? Whether they actually have one (since it is presumably a self-reported state)?

I doubt it, but here is the link to the site (and yes, Zogby is a credible pollster, cited from CNN to Fox News):

Zogby Poll

I'd have to say it's because of something along the lines of what BedKnobbery2 said.

I agree Zogby is a credible pollster.

I'd be just as incline to assume that Kerry voters wouldn't want to admit to not having a passport rather than assuming that they are somehow more worldly and cultured.

Um. I have a passport; I don't think it makes me either worldly or cultured; and I'm voting for Kerry.

Perhaps your deductions are only your personal bias, since I can't see it being in any way based in reality.

My Guess, People with passports are most likely to travel outside of the United States, they will feel safer if Kerry is elected President since one of his campaign promises is to work with other Nations. However I would like to know more about the Demograhics of People with Passports to check the validity of the pol

What would be the point to the statistic then?

In our household-two very active passports(I've had one since
I was 17-am now 50) Dh got his first at 22. Two votes for
Kerry. I guess we fit in the poll's findings. Draw your own conclusions. Mine have been stated already-over and over!
Hmm interesting!

It really doesn't matter but, Gallahad-got a passport, valid
or otherwise? Curious to see if you fit in the poll.

I have a passport, which I have used, and I am voting for Bush (same with DH).

That was a strange thing to poll.

My guess is that it has to do with the big city/suburban edge that Kerry holds. People who live in major metropolitan areas are more likely to need passports at some point (whether it be for their job or for vacation).

Bush's strong areas are the South and the middle of the country -- small town America.

Kerry's strong areas are the Northeast corridor (DC to Boston), Illinois, California... All largely because of major metropolitan areas.

I've had a passport since I was a kid and I won't be voting for Kerry (not sure I'll be voting for Bush, mind you, but definitely not Kerry).

This sounds like a good explanation to me. It's a funny thing to poll, though.

shortbun,

Yes, DW and I and both of our sons have valid and recently used passports.
