A friend & I were talking politics the other day. We're on opposite ends of the political spectrum. I know, not a good thing to do.

Nevertheless, we were talking about why the Democrats gained back both Houses of Congress AND the White house since 2006. We disagreed on what the MAIN issue was that motivated the political turnaround.

What, in your opinion, was the MAIN issue? Not a person or persons, but rather an issue.

What do you think?

2006 elections, I would say that the Iraq thing was the main political issue

2008 ECONOMY, plain and simple

I think the GOP got too wrapped up with the far right wing and turned off the moderates. The fiscal conservatives are also angry about the record deficits the current administration ran up.

Money, money and money.

Too many people wanting Mommy Government to come along and provide for them. Boy, are those folks in for a letdown....

I agree with the addition of the following:
The majority of voters in the country were sick and tired of the status quo. They didn't trust the guy running things.

I wouldn't say there was one main issue. I think there are many different issues swaying different voters, including all those mentioned above.

Add to it things like "no bid contracts" and hiring unqualified partisans for non-political jobs and you have some mighty upset voters.

1. Failures in Iraq
2. Collapse of Economy
3. Lack of Moderation and Bipartisanship
4. Current Incompetence (heck of a job Brownie).
5. People not buying the "fear factor" threat levels.

Mostly it's because the pendulum swings both ways. The Republicans had their run; now it's the democrats' turn. Sometime down the road, it'll be the Republicans' turn again. And so on and so on.

So once again we return to the old fear and smear tatic. Let's see if you voted democratic you must be waiting on a welfare check. (didn't work to well during the election either. LOL)

It could be that too many people got tired of mommy government taking care of big business and coporate ceo's while hard working folks watched 30%of the 401K's disappear and then have an clueless president come on TV and say "THE ECONOMY IS FUNDEMENTALLY SOUND", 2 days before he gets right back on TV to ask for 700 billion dollars to bail out banks. Oh let's not forget it took them an entire year to figure out we were even in a recession

Oh and don't worry about us being let down, we've had the last 8 years to sink to this level, can't get much more letdown than that.

So in a nutshell

The economy sucks.

I firmly believe it was the Iraq War. Once it was clear we weren't going to find WMDs, the American people got very angry at GWB. While it's nice to blame the poor economy, I think the elections would have gone virtually the same regardless.

BTW, my friend, an Obama supporter, blamed the economy.

Like many people have stated,it was a combination of many different things. I feel that the appointed regulators who didn't regulate were another one of the reasons. Can anyone say Cox?

People don't win elections; governments lose them.

Ding Ding Ding - we have a winner! Elections are cyclical and we are now on the upside for the dems. They will get sloppy and stupid and drunk on power in the next several years and another turn around will come.

Also correct.

So ya mean it didn't have anythin' to do with the issues?
How'd you base your votes?

General lack of trust in the current administration - on every issue.
