Political Correctness ruins another holiday.....

Why is everything these days made 'kid friendly'? IMHO Valentines Day is for adults or the more mature kids not 6 and 7 year olds, they ahve plenty of time to grow up and experience this, why not let them be kids for longer. If a 'Friendship day' is needed why not choose anotehr day in the year??

Just curious...

1) How *should* Valentine's Day be celebrated in pre-school?
2) How does calling it friendship day "ruin" it?
3) In all honesty, as a parent, which would you rather you pre-school children be celebrating, romantic love or friendship?
4) What other holiday's have been ruined?

1. The way it traditionally was before the PC nation took over.

2. Maybe "ruin" was a stong word, but all holidays at daycare near me are being renamed... see my post on page 2.

3. I don't care... Valentine's day is just a fun "holiday".

4. Again, see my post on page 2.

My guess is you are one of the PC people.

Why don't you just ask the teacher why they are not calling it Valentine's Day, instead of leaping to the conclusion that it is some "PC" conspiracy. Maybe the daycare chain just decided that a holiday associated with romance is better off skewed toward "friendship" for the preschool set.

::yes::

I've never considered Valentine's Day a "religious" holiday so I seriously doubt it has anything to do with that. They are still having a party and enjoying treats so I'm not sure how it is ruining the holiday for them? :confused3

If you don't like it, put them in a Christian daycare. I'm sure they celebrate all the Christian holidays there....although they would probably still get gypped on Halloween. :stir:

Salmoneous read my previous post. They have corrupted many holiday's

Halloween = Harvest Party
Christmas = Winter festival or Family traditions party
Valentine's day =Friendship Day
Easter= Spring fun day or skipped altogether.

It just keeps going and they are not allowed costumes, trees, cookies, etc.

They also have a rule there that if birthday or any other outside-of-school party invites are passed out there, the whole class must be invited.

Kids still talk and this results in nothing but making it hard on the parents to get out invitations.

The biggest chunk of PC'ness I'm seing is the whole practice of "all or none". Not only does it never completely work, it ranks right up there with sports teams not keeping score because it means somebody has to come in second.

Just as a side note...all these "holidays" started with pagan celebrations and festivals. Carry on... ;)

My other pet peeve...... :thumbsup2

I think a bunch of four year olds celebrating friendship is fine. I agree that the romantic angle of Valentine's Day can be ignored until they are what, 19, 20? ;)

I don't see the PCness of this. In fact someone mentioned and I'd give this more credence, this is reverse PC, so to speak. Removing the evil influence of secular society that revs their young hormones, but keeping the cookies.

Yes, however I was unaware when we joined. However my last daycare did the exact same thing. And the other daycare I know of does as well. So it seems like there really is no choice. They have made up their rules and I'm sure it is because of PC issues.

And even though I hate that policy with a passion, the benefits of the tremendous quality of teaching they do outweighs the idiocy of bowing down to the PC crowd.

I think that reactions to "political correctness" can be just as idiotic as the "political correctness".

And you did have a choice. You could have done something really politically incorrect and had your wife stay home and take care of your kids.

Yes, and I also would have had her lose the wonderful salary she makes too, like that makes any sense.

Yeah, those 4 year olds playing soccer need to learn what its like to be a loser. You're never too young to learn that lesson.

So you CHOSE money over your children not being able to have the wonderful childhood memories you had.

Who said anything about 4yo's? The practice is hardly limited to pre-schoolers.

They have wonderul memories being created, and I have both. You have political correctness. Isn't that wonderful? :lmao:

Are you serious? Are teams honostly doing this?! I thought the whole point of sports teams was to play the sport and go to games where you might win or you might lose. So if no one loses then what is the point of practices and then why even bother cutting people from the team? This just seems really strange to me but I guess I grew up in an unPC time.

But I thought their holiday was "ruined"?

The irony is that there already is a Friendship Day, it is the first sunday of every August...it is called International Friendship Day. (don't ask me why I know this totally useless trivial info, LOL)

Maybe you can ask the PS teacher why they moved the date up? ;)

Sadly yes. While I can see their side of it, it also results in many kids losing interest in sports before they get to experience the real thing.

If it's kept to the ages where they really can't play by the rules anyway, I think it's fine. Sadly I've heard of this reaching into the much higher age groups.

No kidding! It seems that it would be much better to teach children even at young ages to both win and lose gracefully. Besides, it isn't as though the kids don't know who wins, anyway. Then the "coach" just comes out looking like a liar. Make it a modeling time for gracious behavior not a fabbed up "lets all feel good about it anyway" lesson.
