police on property question

Unfortunately, good radar detectors aren't even good anymore.

Pop radar and/or LIDAR is the devil...

I work for the Courts near Chicago and I monitor DUI cases. I think if people REALLY knew what it would cost, that might be more of a deterent than thinking they might hurt themselves or someone else. I wish they'd do like an American Express type commercial:

1. Getting drunk at the bar $50-100
2. Bond for first time DUI $100
3. Good lawyer for DUI $2500 and up
4. Fines, fees and court costs on a 1st time DUI IF good lawyer gets you a good deal - $1640.
5. DUI classes $500-1500 depending on how high the numbers were on the breathalizer
Designated Driver - priceless.
The average DUI in Lake County IL costs $5000. If you live out of state and have to travel to several court dates, it skyrockets even higher.

I know the OP said no drinking and driving and that's great. Our first time speeding tickets here are $79 usually.

Yes, they will. Most states are tied together now with a system that shows these things automatically. My dad ran into a guy yesterday that had been in Orlando last year for a conference - he and three other guys had been out, all following each other back to the hotel, all four got DUIs. Cost about $5,000 over the past year, and that was a first time offense with a deal. License suspended...all that good stuff.
Get a DD (for more reasons than that).

I believe most states have reciprocity (spelling)...(yes they do report...it may take a while to catch up but they do.) At various points and times I have gotten tickets in MD, GA, TN, SC, DC & VA. They all showed eventually.

Does Florida report the violation to a tourist's home state?

Depends on what your home state is. They will, but it's up to the home state whether or not they will assess points for the citation.

That having been said... I'm up to fine #3 after last night. I got nicked for 6 over... I was doing 4 over, I showed him my GPS which is 1000% more accurate than his radar. He still ticketed me. I am going to court for this one.

Did they get you on 536?

I was doing 10 over when I passed them. Quick shot on the brakes and took the DTD exit. I had to go there anyways - but nobody would let me over, so I slammed on the gas right when I saw the cop to get ahead of a car, and shoot over into the exit.

world drive. Since they don't have many lights on that road, it's hard to see a Chevy Impala hiding in the median

You guys are funny!!! I like hearing about those darn cops!!! Oops, I'm married to one!! :rotfl:

Orange County Sheriff cars are often on the road that leads to AKL. It is a 40 mph zone, but most people drive faster. I've seen many people pulled over there. There is often a car along the road near Saratoga Springs entrance as well. The best way to avoid getting a ticket on WDW property is drive the speed limit.

one point I forgot to mention however... Disney security cannot ticket you, nor pull you over. They are a private security force, NOT a police agency.
There is a division however that can be called while security holds you if you are being a threat to anyones saftey including your own.
Disney also has the largest K-9 unit. Not only are they used for drug and bomb sniffing but they also do take downs.

The Disney K-9 unit is for explosive and ordinance detection, not take downs.

They like to sit in places where the speed limit drops suddenly, has a lot of changes or on typically "fast" roads. We have seen several cars sitting and even more pulled over on our past trips out there. There are times we will just follow one of the busses to ensure that we are not going too fast.

They can't actually hold you. You can choose to leave the park if threatened by them. The division Disney Security would have to call is the Orange County Sheriff's Office... they could hold you. Disney Security CM's are just that, CM's. They are not police, and the CM's are not licensed by the State of Florida as security guards. The department may be licensed (FL License Number B 2500155, Training License Number DS2500025), but the guards are not.

They're only there for Bomb Sniffing. Nothing more. They don't sniff drugs, and they don't do take downs. Disney does not want the liability of a dog doing takedowns, nor do they even get bothered if you have drugs on property.

They are in the business of guarding Disney... nothing more. And they can't even do that right if they have to pay off-duty officers to come in. and have an OCSO substation on property.

In fact, the rights given to private security agencies in the State of Florida are as follows:

*Acts as a bodyguard
*Guards property
*Transports prisoners
*Guards armored cars
*Attempts to prevent theft, misappropriation or concealment of property or other valuables
*Seeks the return of such stolen valuables

nowhere on there does it say "detain suspect" or "hold suspect"

I don't plan on ever getting the attention of Disney Security, but don't say they have more power than they do. They don't.

Don't bother. The speed limit is the speed limit. Admit to one over and you're going to be found guilty. (I've prosecuted speeding tickets, among other things of course, for almost sixteen years.)

It would at least reduce my fine to a lower bracket, which is something I'd prefer doing.

Somehow, this discussion turned from a focus on speed traps intentionally designed to prey on out-of-state tourists to a moral gospel on DUI. The latter is a distraction from the real issue, a blatant abuse of law enforcement that has always annoyed me.

The worst kind of speed trap is the one that is set up to deliberately entrap motorists and extort money for the benefit of police agencies or local governments. These speed traps employ absurdly low speed limits, intense enforcement, deliberately confusing signage (or no signage), and dishonest and or abusive local courts.

Hmmm.....sounds a lot like Orange county to me.

Whatever, there are fortunately resources designed to beat the Florida bureaucrats at their own game:

From Orange County section of their Florida files:

Jurisdiction (city, county, etc.): Walt Disney World, Florida
Speed Trap Location: World Drive Road
Nearest Reference Point: Walt Disney World Sign Landmark
GPS Coordinates: n/a
Time of Day: Any time of day
Level of Enforcement: Moderate
Type of Enforcement: Unknown
Date: 8/2005
Just as you are entering WDW property from Interstate (I-4) or coming off from S.R. 535. Just as you come to the Epcot service overpass troopers will watch both directions.

Jurisdiction (city, county, etc.): Orange County, Florida
Speed Trap Location: Tradeport Drive
Nearest Reference Point: Bee Line Expressway
GPS Coordinates: n/a
Time of Day: Mid-day
Level of Enforcement: High
Type of Enforcement: Radar
Date: 6/2005
Tradeport Drive is a continuation of Conway Road, just South of the Bee Line Expressway. Trap is usually set at mid-morning or mid-afternoon, manned by 3-5 motorcycle officers. Speed limit is 45 MPH, but due to limited access to Tradeport Drive, 55-65 mph is the general speed driven in this area. Officers are always just around a bend in the road, preventing seeing them until too late to avoid the radar getting you at flank speed.

Jurisdiction (city, county, etc.): Orange County, Florida
Speed Trap Location: State Route 528
Nearest Reference Point: Tr. 528 Expressway
GPS Coordinates: n/a
Time of Day: Any time of day
Level of Enforcement: Moderate
Type of Enforcement: Radar
Date: 4/2004
The area on the Bee-Line expressway between Route 417 to John Young Parkway is a set up, specifically near the airport. The speed limit heading west is 70, then drops to 60, then back up again to 65, then down to 55. Unless you're staring at the signs instead of the raod, you won't see the frequent changes in the posted speed limit.

Jurisdiction (city, county, etc.): Orange County, Florida
Speed Trap Location: Interstate I-4
Nearest Reference Point: Exit Number Between the I-Drive on ramp and the Sea World on ramp
GPS Coordinates: n/a
Time of Day: AM Rush Hour
Level of Enforcement: Moderate
Type of Enforcement: Radar
Date: 8/2005
Despite the posted 55 mph limit, traffic moves at 65-70. Indeed, the limit changes to 65 at the Sea World curve. Easy pickins' for FHP, especially the tourist traffic. Gotta pity getting an extra souvenier while in Orlando.

Jurisdiction (city, county, etc.): Orange County, Florida
Speed Trap Location: State Highway 50 (aka Colonial Dr.)
Nearest Reference Point: Bithlo Landmark
GPS Coordinates: n/a
Time of Day: Late night
Level of Enforcement: Moderate
Type of Enforcement: Radar
Date: 4/2004
Speed trap is always set on north side of the road right after the mph is reduced from 65 to 45.

Jurisdiction (city, county, etc.): Orange County, Florida
Speed Trap Location: Florida Turnpike
Nearest Reference Point: State Highway 528
GPS Coordinates: n/a
Time of Day: PM Rush Hour
Level of Enforcement: High
Type of Enforcement: Radar
Date: 1/2004
The state patrol is set up on the exit ramp from the Turnpike to SR 528/Orange Blossom Trail. The speed limit sign is obstructed by a construction sign and is listed as 25 mph. There are 3 - 5 squad cars just around the bend in the ramp, and they clock at that point. Even under the best circumstances it is difficult to go from 70 to 25 in the given space without risking a collision; with the obstructed sign it is virtually impossible.

Must work differently in FL. Here in IL once you plead not guilty and you go to court and are found guilty, the judge can assess any fine from $1 to $1000 for any speeding ticket, and the court costs usually exceed what the over-the-counter ticket would have been. (Also, everything up to 10 over is the same category here.)

Any chance of contacting the prosecutor for a plea-bargain? It does seem to be what we in The Business call a CSV (Chicken S*** Violation).

We also saw multiple people pulled over on Disney property last week on the 536 entrance between I 4 and Epcot.

Maybe the fine money could go toward purchasing more speed limit signs since it is hard to determine what the limit acutally is on property.

As long as someone is going faster than me I don't worry about it.

I guess it is a good thing that most people don't realize the lack of Disney Security authority. Recently, a guy had been passing bad checks at DTD. He did it one night in the store where my sister works. They didn't realize it until after the guy left. A week later, he returned to the same store and the CM to write another check. She went to the backroom and called Disney Security. The came and detained the man until the Orange County Sheriff arrived.
