Just curious what the talent on here thinks of these? Do you use them, if so what brand? I was driving home the other day and was thinking about how crisp polarized sunglasses make everything and it dawned on me they make polarizing filters and it got me wondering if it is something that should be in my arsenal

It is one of the only filter effects that cannot be recreated in post processing.

I use them frequently as one of my prime subjects is seascapes in new england working on a book project which may or may not get off the ground due to career keeping me very busy so book photography takes a back seat.

You might want to look at 'Moose's Filters' which are a combination of a circular polarizer and a 81A warming filter as typically situations where a polarizer are used tend to have somewhat cold lighting.

Dont worry about the difference between a linear polarizer and a circular polarizer prime difference is that AF systems need a circular polarizer otherwise they will not wor.

I had been taught that brand is quite important as well because you don't want to take away from the investment you've made in the lens by putting a low quality filter in front of it, especially when you consider the cost difference between brands - it's worth the extra few dollars to get a good one.

The problem with filters is that there are several that are significantly over priced for what they are. I agree that you don't want to put junk on a quality lens, but don't feel the need to get the absolute best either.

I don't understand the latest fad of the "digital" filter. I think it is an advertising gimic. They seem to charge a premium for them. Look multi-coated.

The only filters I routinely use are a circular polarizer an neutral density. If you don't buy anything else, buy these.
