Pokemon GO In the Parks?

Something to be careful of - no matter what Pokemon you are chasing... DO NOT GO BACKSTAGE! My dad works security at Disney World, and he said they are having real problems with people climbing rails and breaking into backstage areas to play the game. If they find you backstage, you will be escorted from the park. You could even be banned. It is not worth it!
Is this for real??

Honestly doesn't shock me! One of the stops near us is a water tower, with a HUGE fence around it, I could seriously see someone fanatical climbing it just to get the items.

Seems like there's a decent chance that some people will really get hurt playing this. Wonder what will happen then.

You'd think people would be smarter than that, but plenty of examples out there where they're clearly not.

Don't quote me on the specifics lol, but I read a news article where someone set up a lure (don't ask me I don't get the Pokemon thing) and when people showed up the person robbed them. From what little of the game I understand there are both positives and negatives with it.

Yes. By the weekend there were reports of guests entering backstage areas in search of Pokemon.

Good grief. Seems to me like this will bring far more trouble than it's worth in the end. Hope I'm wrong.

Seems to have all the earmarks of a fad, so I'll keep my fingers crossed... at least by our Nov trip... ;)

In all seriousness, people are distracted enough with these devices while driving and walking. Any tragic accident that somehow involves this game will get a ton of attention. Not that this will necessarily change anything.

This is what you are looking for, good things but also bad things like robberies, caught cheating and injuries.

We already have here in NL the first person fired because not being able to stop playing during work hours. We are no doubt waiting for the first Pokemon Go death.

DD and I have been playing a bit, but there is no way we will be playing while at Disney or any other experience similar. Why bother spending time and money traveling to Disney if we need to be entertained by something else while we're there.
Good point.

We arrive in WDW this Saturday for an 11-night stay. It will be DD's 2nd trip in 6 months and our (DW and I) 3rd trip in 8 months. We all love WDW but to be blatantly honest, sometimes we do get a little bored. Having something new and different to do in the parks is great, even if it isn't actually a Disney activity. Since only DD is playing, we may just split up and have her go off to play and meet up with her later.

Bored at Disney? Why do you keep going back?

On our local news this morning: A young girl injured by being hit by a car crossing the street while playing. Her mother was interviewed and blamed the app designer for "making" her daughter cross a busy road. Another person drove into a tree because he was playing while driving. Some idiot is going to cause a real tragedy, you can see it coming! :sad2:

We had a kid hit and injured crossing a busy street near our house while using his skateboard because he didn't go to the crosswalk or wait for the traffic light. His parents didn't claim that the skateboard manufacturer caused the problem instead of the kid making bad choices that resulted in his injuries.

I did not read entire thread a couple pages so someone may has said this, I don't get it , people are at a Disney park and wasting time playing a game on there phone. I like games too but I think there's a really good chance I can find something better to entertain myself while at a park.

I can't believe this has come back. My mom and I took my niece in 1999 and she was into it, back then it was cards. She saw a store in the Orlando airport had the cards when we got there and it was all she wanted. I told her I would give her $50 to spend at WDW, she didn't want to spend it because she wanted to save it to buy those cards before going home. I told her no way. I didn't spend all this money to take her to WDW to come home with Pokémon cards.

I am BIG on personal responsibility! However, if game designers are "placing" these things as detailed below, I can certainly imagine liability on their parts:

I'm happy to say that DD9 and DS11 have ZERO interest in this game. :)

It never went away. Pokemon came out in 1996. Millions of kids have played pokemon since 1996. Including ds22 born in 1996 to dd14 born in 2001. Like the old baseball cards, many early pokemon cards are valuable. You made an investment with your $50!

The app is just a new version of the game series.

Much like Harry Potter phenomenon, the kids who grew up with it still love it and are now playing the app at 20 + And beyond. Heck, at college visit tours we saw college kids in common areas playing the card games.

Too bad. It can be a fun family activity.

People have been scaling fences for dumb reasons forever. Don't blame the game.

I also heard that and about people trespassing on private property...also phones being taken because the player is distracted. I think this app is the worst thing ever. I dislike excessive cell phone use as is and this is one more thing that could cause accidents.

I can blame the game for locating these things in stupid places -- absolutely.

People should know better than to try to get to them in those stupid places, but that's not how liability works.

There are so many places to catch these items that going into unauthorized areas is not necessary and totally on the gamer who does it. I get lawsuits and liability. But to just use that as the reason to put down the game is naive.

Just because your neighbor has a tv and you need one, you know better than to get his. You go to the store.

There are dangers at Disney, but we all go anyway. We are smart about it. The way most people do most things.

I think the app is much better national news than other stories this summer.
