DH has poison ivy all over his legs and it just keeps spreading! He's highly sensitive to it, so he's oozing all over the place and he says it HURTS!

He has a prescription for cortizone that will be ready in about 1/2 hour. Any other ideas? He keeps putting gauze and calomine ocean on it. Any way to keep it from spreading?

Also, can it spread if he's taking a shower or bath?

When you go to pick up the meds ask the pharmacist what they suggest. They should carry things like TecNu that will also help dry it up.

Did the doctor offer to give him a shot?

No, she just put new gauze on it and gave him the scrip. He had soaked it through by the time he got home.

Wherever the oil came into contact with his skin is where he is going to break out. He can try sitting in an Aveeno Oatmeal bath if you have any on hand. It relieves the pain and itching somewhat.

Someone at the drug store should be able to tell you what they have that would be best for him. Hope he gets all better real soon!

You might want to ask the doctor to prescribe oral steroids (a medrol dose pack) to clear this up. As stated, only areas that come in contact with the oil (resin) from the plant will be affected. Meaning, it won't spread in the shower. Good luck

Over the counter oral Benedryl. It will help relieve the itching.

I agree. You can also ask for a one-dose injection (my preference). I usually just go to an immediate med place because I need the steroid and I need it NOW!

Good luck!

I think the dose pack is what he got - he has to take 6 pills the first day, then 5, 4, 3, etc...

He doesn't know how he came into contact with it - he always wears long pants when mowing or weeding and there's none in our yard. :confused3

The pharmacists said to try some spray on stuff and I got the TecNu, too.

That's the medrol. Relief is in sight, it may be a day or two, but it's coming. Since it's on his legs, maybe he would be more comfortable sleeping alone.

I get poison ivy really bad, and I can't stand to have anyone near me, even when I am awake!
