I understand that the number of points you buy will really help you decide where to stay and that these dont go up unless you opt to buy more. But my question is, say its 150 points to stay at the BWV for one week in Sept this year, will that go up year on year or does that rate stay the same?
I hope ive explained myself ok.

Thanks For you help

Emma

The number of points for a unit for the year must remain the same but they can adjust one day or season upward with a corresponding decrease elsewhere. The only problem will be for those that are looking to go low season or only weekdays and buy exactly the number of points required to do so. They could easily lose a day each year if there was a rebalancing.

Dean is of course, correct. I would like to point out that the point requirements for the DVC resorts have remained very stable so far. From what I have read (mainly on this board), there have been only 2 adjustments since the beginning of DVC. The first was a reallocation at OKW. It has been reported that the the points for a slower season went up slightly and points for a busier season went down. The second adjustment was to split BWV into standard and preferred views. Apparently, this was in response to members' complaints about the parking lot/entrance way views costing the same as the Boardwalk views.

It's good to keep in mind that the points for a particular day of the week or a particular season at a DVC resort COULD go up or down. However, based on the record to date, adjustments are few and far between.

Thanks for the replies. I was concerned that we would end up having to buy or borrow extra points each year.

Emma....the only extra points you would "have" to buy would be caused by the point addiction many have experienced! Not that the point structure has changed, but that the experience is so pleasant that we always want a "few more" points to enable more trips, longer trips, and upgrades to larger accommodations than previous trips. :p

On a serious note, Dean and CarolMN have given you good information about the points. You don't have to worry that your 150 (or whatever amount) points won't "buy" as much in the future as they do now.

You do know, I guess, that the annual dues on those points can go up. I know that wasn't your question, but wanted to make sure you knew all the angles of this purchase decision.

Good luck!

Not being a DVC member, and trying to learn everything about it through this forum, I am confused:confused: Is the rebalancing based on each unit or the entire property. For example, could the 1 BRs go up for every season, while the 2BRs and GVs go down to compensate?

That's an interesting question. A "unit" in DVC in legal terms is not a room, it's a collection of rooms. At OKW it's a building and at the others it's a sement of a floor. It started out at VB being an entire floor but since the entire "unit" must be declared to member inventory BEFORE it can be sold, that was too big of a slice for DVD to give up at one time. I suspect that you ask is possible but the reality is that I don't think you need to worry about that possiblity.

What one should worry a little about is weekends going up with weekdays going down and the possibility of the lower seasons going up at the benefit of higher seasons going down. The other variation, which I think is really the biggest risk, is some times changing seasons. I would think there is the risk of adventure season evaporating at WDW or at least early December moving to another season. Of course other times would need to be adjusted downward to accomodate this. Some would come out ahead and others would lose.

Dean - Why do you think early December might move out of "value" season? We enjoyed our one trip during that time, and perhaps I should schedule another before a change like this occurs!!! What do you think would trigger it?

Actually, I was simply making sure the original poster knew what could happen. It is DVC's responsibility to even out usage throughout the year as much as possible. If this means rebalancing, then so they must. It seems early December has been awfully popular lately and that is the reason I speculated this might occur.

Dean,
I also thing the popularity of all the resorts (not just DVC) has something to do with our DVC seasons. I am sure Disney likes to have all those DVC resorts full and attending the parks when the rest of the on site resorts are not at capacity.

DVC's responsiblity is to the member base, plain and simple. While they have to live with the rest of the Disney family, that shouldn't be a motivation. Going by the variation in the DVC and regular Disney resorts as to season, I don't think the seasons are dictated by Disney itself.
