Hi

Can anyone help me. I own DVC at OKW with an OCT UY. If I was to transfer points to someone else or even if I wanted to have points transferred to my account does it have to be at the same resort? Do the points have to have the same UY? For instance could I transfer points into my account from a person who has BWV points with a May UY? If I can could I only use them at BWV? Are they interchangable? Hopefully someone understands my mixed up question. HELP!!

Okay, here's the deal. Anyone can transfer points to you from any resort. DVC "rules" say that those points keep their orginial resort and UY. It doesn't really happen that way. They DO keep their original UY, but they "become" your resort unless you request a manual transfer, and "babysit" those points very carefully.

I transferred points into another member's account. He owned at OKW, and was getting enough points transferred into his account to get a GV at BWV. He wanted all the points to stay BWV points for the 11 mo. window...but, lo and behold...he ended up with 1000 more OKW points. He was not real happy. He said it took 5 phone calls and many hours to get what DVC said would happen in their own "rules". He did get it done, though.

There are positive sides to this. If you wanted to add points at OKW for the 11 month booking window, you could buy ANYONE's points, have them transferred into your account, and they become OKW points. (Although, I hate to mention this, as I have made a few others mad for doing so).

The only thing to remember regarding trades are:
1) the original UY still remains, so dont' think these points "expire" or need to be "banked" by the same date as your original points.
2) banked/borrowed points cannot be transferred, but transferred points can be banked
3)transferring in/out can happen multiple times per year, but only in ONE direction (you can transfer points in or out of your account more than one time per year, but you cannot transfer points BOTH in and out in the same year). I hope that last sentence makes sense to you.

If I did not answer any of your questions, please let me know, and I will try to explain better.

While this may be true at this moment, be aware that DVC is aware of this loophole in the software and is addressing the issue. If you transfer points expecting to circumvent the intent of the program (points retain same Home Resort and Use Year), you may find that the system has been corrected and the points will be treated exactly as the written policy states.

To answer the original question, you can use the transferred points to reserve at that resort 11 months ahead (until the system is fixed, this may need to be done manually). The transferred points may be used at any resort 7 months in advance. Transferred points may be used for non-DVC options 11 months in advance, regardless of home resort status.

I think it's always been there and DVC originally assumed that it would never be an issue, as transfers were not a highly used feature of the program.

Now, with about 90,000 members and with websites like ours sharing experiences and analysis of every detail of DVC, they have found an increase in the transfer utilization. They have modified it's use since the original policy to make it a more attractive program (originally, only ONE transfer - either in or out - was allowed per year, while now there is no limit - but only one direction is allowed). At this time DVC management is aware of the software "bug" and is addressing the issue. It may come with the advent of our DVC online system (still reportedly 1-2 years away) or it may come tomorrow.

Stay Tuned!

This is true, however, they have been addressing this issue for at least 5 years. I would expect one would be safe until there is a budget item for a new software program or major update. At the present time the loophole causes more problems than anything else even though it is possible to put one over for anyone who is in the right situation and willing to do so.

Thanks WebmasterDoc,

I just transferred some points and the member told me they take on his resort. The UY was the same. I told him, MS told me they retain the home resort, as i understood the policy of tranfering points. He said no they take on his resort and was unware that they should retain the resort.

Thanks for helping me to understand the confusion, Jim.

Visiting family and very busy lately. Thanks for the thoughts.

Could someone describe the transfer process?

From what I understand, the two DVC Member parties involved in the transfer get on the phone with MS via conference and MS would walk us through the transfer process.
I have read that MS should not be involved in the payment of these transferred points. That is to remain between the two member parties, correct?

Thanks!
Sheryl

Officially, no payment is allowed or to be made, so, no, they don't want to know about or be involved in it.

The person I transferred points to wrote up a contract. I signed it, and faxed it back to him. He then paid me. When I received payment, I called MS and had them transfer the points into his account. Then, I called him and told him it was done.

It does take trust from both parties, but it was easy!! We talked on the phone a couple of times during the transfer, and just knowing that we each actually answered the phone at both ends made us both feel better.

Then, there is the bottom line that BOTH parties are DVC disers...that right there makes me trust the whole situation a little more.
