Points Transfer question

Got a question,

Say I have a Feb 07 use year at SSR, and I have passed up the chance to bank the points into next year. I also have a separate master contract at SSR for October 07. If I transfer them into my Oct 07 SSR use year, will they still expire in Feb 08, or would they then be good for the duration of my October 07 use year? If so, this would effectively extend their useful life until September 30, 2008. Is this possible?

This would not exactly be point "morphing" in the traditional sense, since all points are at the same home resort. How would this work?

I don't know the answer to your transfer question other than that transferred points are supposed to retain both their home resort and Use Year. So in theory, you could not extend the life of your points by transferring them. In the past, it was possible to do this but supposedly MS is keeping closer track of transferred points these days. I hope someone with more experience will provide more information.

There may be another option for someone in this situation, at least through the end of 2007 while we're still under the current banking rules. With a Feb UY, you are still in your 50% banking window for a few more days so you can bank up to 50% of the total points owned in all of your related contracts, assuming no points have been banked earlier in your UY. Some people forget that points in related contracts (a master and all of its add-ons) are considered pooled when calculating banking percentages. This higher total can sometimes make a difference in situations like this.

For example, let's say you owned a 150-point master contract at SSR and a 50-pt add-on at BWV and haven't banked any points yet this UY. In your 50% window you could bank up to 100 points in any combination of your SSR and BWV points. In your 25% window, up to 50 points could be banked so all of the BWV points could be banked in the 25% window. Of course all of this point pooling is moot once the new banking rules come into effect in January.

the technical answer might not represent reality. I'd do the transfer and see what happens. All you'd loose is the once a use year transfer for each 2007 use year.

I agree with Dean. Technically the transferred points are supposed to retain the same UY. I've read on here, though, that sometimes that happens and sometimes it doesn't.

The banking scenario (with the 50%) mentioned earlier might also be a good idea.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Even if the rules are enforced, one could bank up until the last day of the use year of the transferred points. Still helpful in this situation.

I'd be surprised if the OP were allowed to transfer points between the two contracts (since they are both for the same resort).

Unless he/she was making a reservation and was short a few points to complete it, there is no reason to do a transfer - except to extend the life of the points. Can't imagine DVC/MS would encourage that.

ABsolutely no restrictions in this area. It is treated as two different members in most situations, and when it's not, the benefits go to the member.
