It's 60 days from the start of a new reservation that you make with those points.

Points go into holding immediately if you cancel at less than 31 days before arrival. Holding points expire at the end of your UY. They cannot be banked or transferred. They can only be used to book a reservation that begins within the next 60 days from the day that you go online or call MS to make that reservation.

And to add, you can also end up with holding points if you modify a trip within 31 days to use less points. The freed up points will be in holding.

Also, if you want to reallocate points that were freed up from a different canceled trip within 31 days, you’d still end up with holding points.

It applies to all changes to the points, not just when you cancel.

I have another question on points in holding. If I have another trip planned and modify the points being used within 60 days but before we 30 days, can I use the points in holding and then have the points freed up for regular use or banking?

Only if any of the nights are still available at the 60 day mark. I did this once, I had points and there were still Poly days.

The system allowed me to modify, and it picked up the holding for the nights that were there.

Okay, so you can't reassign which points to use. You're booking another room in a sense.

Correct. That is why if you modify what you have, the only way the system will pick up the holding points if a room is still there to use them on.
