heya, sorry if this is the wrong place to put this, but I guess I’m just trying to figure out the procedure here. Long story still long, I rented out points from he who shall not be named back in December for two reservations (banked 2019 points), one in July like a day before parks reopened and one in August. I honestly hadn’t been around here much since we had a baby in January so priorities lol, so I wasn’t aware of all that stuff going on in the big David’s thread.

i received both PayPal payments on check in day and I hadn’t even though about it. But i went in to bank our points for this year Before november deadline since I knew we wouldn’t be using the, this year, and our planning a big trip next year with points from all 3 years. and I noticed we had 323 points available for this year. the 123 extra points were for the exact points of the august reservation. I spent about an hour on chat waiting with member services and while waiting she asked me if my guests ____ and ____ had checked in or not. And I had no idea as I hadn’t gotten any communication. (Nit sure I would have in normal circumstances even ) but the lady said that they are my points to use by March 2021 (april UY) and its “not in regards to that reservation”. I guess I’m just wondering if someone just doesn’t show is that even right? Would they not at the very least like leep the first nights points like a hotel would for a no show? I’m not looking to double dip renting the points or anything, I’m just more wondering what happens in this case? I have this fear of them taking some of the other points for some miscalculation from next year and then our big trip being hurt with my parents, wife, and then 1 1/2 year old. (I’m already worried cause we have tickets just sitting there that went unused when we couldn’t fly from Oregon to WDW due to Dorian so am bracing for some weird glitch meaning we all have to buy new 10 day passes lol)
(Reservation shows as ”completed”
sorry for the rant, this is just uncharted waters for me. Thx!

Take a look at your Points Activity on the website under My Vacation Points. That would tell you the date they were put back.

Thank you sorry I forgot to mention I did that. It was 9/9 and was a “manual adjustment to bank points“ of +123. So just over a month after the exact same points reservation from 8/6-8/11

So you have both the money and the points? Give back the money. Then rerent the points... either through the “evil one” or on your own.

Right now you are double dipping.

@Stinkomann20x6 It does sound as if your renter never checked into the resort for that reservation. I am assuming the broker never called prior to that to ask about rescheduling the trip or something for the renter given the status of your point showing on the DVC website. I would try contacting your broker to see if they know anything. If your renter never checked in, and DVC gave your points back, I'd be likely to try to refund the renter or reschedule for them, if possible.

Hi thanks for response. I understand that if there was no resort open etc. but with a resort open that off the top of my head seems a little different than me taking a loss when the resort wasn’t open to offer the rental. I could be missing something. In my calculation/understanding though I admit.

Thank you for the idea. I have had no contact from David’s which made me think since it was after resorts are open and parks that it was a go, or fell under the regular rental category. I definitely would use the points to accommodate the renters on different dates if I could.

wow. I’ve never heard of MS giving an owner back their points for not checking in!
Yeah it all seems off to me. And the MS person saying that it’s not in regards to that reservation, yet it’s the exact amount of points of that reservation.

She absolutely should not give back the money unless that is what she wants to do If DVC gave her the points back for a no show that was nice of them but having to rent again is not her issue.

Sorry, I know not popular opinion but at this point it’s not on the owner. She expected the points to be taken.

I certainly would not rent them again but I’d not worry at then and let them expire or use them.

This is where I’m Kind of at. I’m not looking to re-rent the points to someone else for more money or anything.
And I’d even be willing to rebook for them if they’d like for no extra charge or whatever was being talked about in that large David’s thread. Thank you for response on the letting them expire. I guess I was just worried about a glitch in the system causing me issues in our big trip next year.

Why should the OP go through all the work to contact the broker and send the money back? The resorts were open in August so I would treat this as a normal rental at this point. It's one thing if the renter tried to cancel/change prior to check-in but not saying anything and no-showing would get zero help from me after the fact.

If the OP does want to return the money, I would probably wait a long while just in case DVC did make some sort of mistake. The last thing you want is to return the money, spend the points, and then find out DVC made the mistake and then removes the points. They you are out the money AND the points.

If MS told you it’s not related to that then don’t worry. It could be a mistake too and they will catch.
Thanks. It’s even weird that they looked at it and said it’s nothing. But I figure if they stay there until they expire then I have nothing to worry about.

Thx that’s a good point. I mean I saved the chats from MS to back up if I have any issues. But I just still feel odd about it so thought I’d seek out further advice here. Appreciate it!

The reservation was available to the renter to check in. The renter chose not to check in. The owner is absolutely not double dipping,
I realized mine was not going to be the answer that owners would embrace. But at this point OP has money.... presumably someone’s money not her own... plus the points she supposedly rented. In my book that is double dipping.

I’ve been an owner myself for many years. I don’t think OP is alone. I suspect there are more than a few owners who kept the money and the points. That’s just my perspective but I also don’t look at the “evil one” as the spawn of the devil and owners as an angelic chorus. Some people lost... but some gained. No one wants to be the former.

I appreciate even unpopular points of view so thank you for sharing. I always think it’s good not to be just in an echo chamber. :)
I think I might see if I can look through to rebooking the renters if that’s an option for them. Because I agree I’m not looking to make double the money and re renting and keeping the money for the initial one. But if it’s the policy of DVC that the points don’t go back into my account and this was a glitch, that’s a tough pill to swallow when the reservation was kept for them and the resorts and parks were open. And then potentially be left with DVC fixing the glitch and being out the money for a reservation that was kept and available. I truly do feel for all affected negatively in this. It’s just a crazy and not fun situation for all.

*edit. I guess how my brain interprets it, is if I rented the points again for even more money on top of what I got, that I’d be double dipping. Heck even if I used the points (not gonna happen flying across country twice to WDW with a laid off spouse and an infant) I’d probablyconscientiously feel like I’m double dipping.

David’s also has the renter’s money. Do you think that they will fully refund all money to the renter if the OP were to return it? That would be inconsistent with how they have operated from the beginning.

It sounds as if the renter, for whatever reason, just never showed up. Maybe they contacted David’s at the last minute and were told that the resorts are open, there are no refunds. You don’t know what happened on that end. The OP never heard anything about the renter not traveling. They upheld their end of the agreement. They should be paid. They shouldn’t have to accept returned points as compensation for an unused reservation when they cannot use those points. And heaven forbid if this is a mistake on DVC’s part and they claw back those points after the OP refunds or re-rents.

Except that reservation shows as complete and MS has told you it did not relate to that.
