We are currently looking at buying a small (50pt) DVC contract. We want to pay cash and that's what we are comfortable with for the time being.

We've done Disney for the last 3 years and plan on taking a break next year. So the next time we'll be back is 2012. We figure we'll do Disney every 2-3 years so with banking and borrowing we'd have enough for a visit every 3 years which we are comfortable with.

That being said, we are wondering about these member getaways if we decide to skip Disney for a few years. How do these points work? Will 50 pts get us a 1 night stay? 3 days? A week? Is each hotel different? Is it impossible to book these because they fill up quickly?

Anyone with insight into these member getaways?

Thanks!

Check out the different resort points chart you can acess them through this site. It all depends on when you want to go, what size accomodations you want etc... There are alot of factors to consider.

We just booked a 2 bedroom for 6 nights in Feb LK view for 328 points,(Tues - Mon) but I also have a ressie this year for a 2 bedroom for 5 nights at OKW in May and it is 160 points.(Sun - Fri) Looking to get a 1 bedroom or studio for my daughter for 6 nights in Aug and the range is anywhere from 232 points for 1 bedroom at BCV and as low as 94 points for a studio at OKW (that includes a Fri and Sat night) Look at the charts and yes it is very possible to go for a week with 50 point every 3 years.

If you are looking for 50 points you will have to buy resale so my only advice is to buy where you would like to stay (and consider the point charts since some places cost more points per night) and also look to see if you can get a contract that has current or last years points that can be banked so you can double up right from the start! You would have to use any 2009 banked points by whatever UY you end up with (example Dec UY) 2009 banked UY points need to be used by Dec 2011, but if the contract comes with 2010 points those can be banked until Dec 2012. Keep reading this site there is a wealth of information and the TSS has been a great resource for me!

There are currently 2, soon to be 3, non park DVC locations. For those you just use your DVC points directly. There are a number of cash equivalent options (DCL, Concierge Collection, non DVC Disney hotels, Adventures by Disney) and these usually return somewhere between $5 and $7.50 per point value with most in the $6-$6.75 range with dues being not much less than that for most location. There are also direct timeshare exchanges through RCI or Buena Vista Trading company. If you're looking at 50 points only, you won't have enough to worry much about this and will be far better off just banking/borrowing to use your points on DVC trips and paying cash for other options/off years. I would not buy extra points for the exchange options. You should plan what you'll use at DVC and if DVC is for you, buy enough points for what you're sure you'll need with a cushion of 10-20% depending on your specific plans.
