Has anyone every donated points that they haven't used. For instance for make a wish foundation. That is what I'm thinking of doing if I end up buying like I hope too.
There have been discussions here from time to time. I don't think there is a way to donate the actual points, but you can make reservations and donate the reservations for charitable use. (Not sure what is deductible.)
Another option discussed recently is working with "Give Kids The World" to book reservations for as little as a night at a time to let the parents of the ill children have a break.
It would be great if DVC could somehow set up a program where we could directly donate excess points.
Setting up the program would probably be pretty easy since they already take our points for DVC use when we go elsewhere. The issue is managing it over the long term. I'd not want to manage it if I were DVC, and I know I'd not want my dues going to pay for someone to manage it on the chance it happens to partner with a non-profit I don't support. And regardless of their level of responsibility in the program, DVC would wind up taking heat whenever someone felt disenfranchised because their need wasn't met and someone else's was. Nope...too hot of a potato to want to juggle.
What would probably work is if the various charities that do send people to WDW (the 'wish' type places) had their own DVC membership into which we could transfer points. There are logistics to over come, and managing the points might be hectic, but that would all be things that the charity and it's supporters would need worry about...not DVC and not someone who has 10 points left that they need to rent or otherwise use.
just wanted to add that you can check IRS Publication 526 for more info about this type of donation being NOT tax-deductable: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p526/ar02.html#d0e1463
