I am sure this has been asked, but I couldn't find the answer. It appears that I may be short by a few points (8) even after borrowing for next year. Does MS allow paying cash to make up for the point shortage? I would rather do that than go through a points rental process. Thank you for any info!

not exactly.

chuck just posted this elsewhere so i'll copy him here.

Cash and points can not be mixed for any one night. But you can "purchase" up to 24 one time use points (basically renting points from DVC) for $15 per point to complete a reservation*. Another option would be to seek a transfer of points from another member using a site, such as our Rent/Trade board, or paying all cash for some nights of the reservation and all points for other nights of the reservation. The DVC Member cash rate is a 25% discount off the full room rate, but the discount is not always available.

It is also often cheaper (if you have an Annual Pass) to use the Annual Pass rate for those cash nights.

*One time use points are only available if booking within 7 months of the check-in date. You can not use the one time points while booking within the 11 month home resort priority window.

You can pay some nights points/some nights cash. I used to do that at OKW when weekdays were 20 points and weekends were 48 (1 bedroom for May) and I wanted to stay Saturday to Friday. I would pay cash for the weekend night and save 48 points.

I have a question relating to the op's question. If you are going to use some points and some cash, will MS make all the whole reservation or do you only book the nights with points through MS and then call the other number for the nights being paid with cash? (If you need to make 2 calls, how do they link the reservation so you can stay in the same room?)

I called to make a reservation today. The CM sensed my hesitation in borrowing points from next year. I was offered the chance to get 24 extra points to use for $15 a point. I was told they are offering this once a year. I haven't been on the boards very much lately.. but I guess DVC is in the point rental business.. ;)

They are "one time use". You can only do it once a year, but it's available all the time unless you've already done it...

And, to add, its only available at 7 months. I was also told that it is only available if you are out of current UY points. They won't allow you to "buy" the points until you are in a borrowing situation.

When I was booking my son's December trip, I wanted to buy the 24 points in lieu of using the current UY points because I was going to be making my Oct 2012 reservation within 2 weeks of that call and wanted all the points to use at BWV at the 11 month window.

Since the December trip was well within the 7 month window, I figured I could do that. The CM said no--as long as you have current UY points to use, you have to use those first.

You can book with the member discount (25%) through MS if available. They will link the 2 reservations. If you want to book with another discount through CRO, you would have to call them but the reservations cannot be linked but you can request they be noted.

Splashboat - member services can book the cash nights, but depending when you call - sometimes at the 11 months mark they haven't know what their inventory for cash nights will be. I have had to call back at a later date in some cases for the cash nights, and sometimes they have been able to book them right away. They then can tie the reservations together.

On the 24 one time use points - you can only do this once in a year.

I purchased 12 points to complete my BWV reservation at a cost of 180 dollars; we then decided to change our reservation to AKV and i needed one extra points - i wasn't allowed to purchase the one point since the rule is 'once only' and had to use one point from another contract. Not my first choice, but do-able. If i hadn't had that option buying or transferring one point from another member isn't very easily done, so i guess my point is - make sure you purchase all the additional points you anticipate needing as you only have one chance to do so and the maximum is 24 points.

Oops... wrote this yesterday, and just found it on my screen this morning. I never hit the submit button.

Member Services can book cash nights. If they book it, it will be linked together as a single reservation with your points nights. You won't have to change rooms, and it will be considered a DVC stay for all nights.

Because of this, the nights you're paying cash for will have the same rules as DVC points stays -- no daily housekeeping, free internet (well I guess that's moot now), etc.

DVC Member Services also offers special member rates at a 25% discount, but they are not available all the time. (There is a limited number of them, and the exact distribution is not known. The only way to know if the discounted rate is available at a specific resort, room type, and date is to call Member Services.)

You can also call Central Reservations and book your cash nights like any other Walt Disney World visitor would do. The DVC villas are usually available for cash bookings through them. CRO bookings can utilize discount codes and special deals to get reduced costs, and are also available for offerings like free dining or 4th night free. CRO reservations also get daily maid service. However, CRO reservations cannot be linked with DVC reservations. When you arrive at the resort, if both of your reservations are for the same room type and view, they may work with you so you don't have to change rooms between reservations if you ask. However, there's no guarantee and it's all up to the Cast Member you get at check in.
