Points at non-DVC resorts & last 4 mos of UY?

I'm new and still trying to figure the ins and outs of DVC ownership. The points charts for non-DVC resorts such as GF, other Disney resorts around the world, and DCL all say that I can't book and travel to these resorts with points in the last 4 months of my use year. Does this mean what I think it means? If my use year starts in Sep, then I will never be able to use points for these types of vacations during the summer?

Another related question? Can I only book this type of vacation 7 months out? Or can I book it earlier than that?

If you have an April UY, you cannot book a stay for Dec, Jan, Feb or Mar in that same UY (like you are in 2010 UY now, so this would be for Dec 10, Jan 11, Feb 11, Mar 11) during those same months.

You can book it 11 months out, you can book it five months out. You can book it in April for May. But not in Dec, Jan, Feb or Mar for that same time period.

Rule is that up until the end of the eighth month of your use year you can pick up the phone and call to reserve a trip at non-DVC resorts that occurs during the last four months of your use year, you just cannot both call to reserve and go during last four months of use year.

With an April use year, the deadline to book a non-DVC stay (except Disneyland) for December through March would be 11/30.

Yes, with a Sept UY, you have to book by the end of April. As long as you do that, you can travel in your last 4 months--May, June, July or August.

Thanks everyone. The more I had read that fine print, the more I had thought I had locked myself out of summer vacations (well, except for actual DVC resorts). Now I feel much better.
