Hi everybody,

We decided on our last cruise day to buy into DVC. I know that using points for a cruise isn't the best deal, but my question is rather general anyway.
The DVC salesman told us that if people use points and cash for a cruise, the cash rate is a rate negotiated between DVC and DCL.
How does this rate compare to the regular prices on the DCL website?
I've already sent a mail to member services and just got a canned answer that had nothing to do with my question at all, which makes the prospect of dealing with them for 46 years rather frustrating.

Is it normal to feel really overwhelmed by all the rules and information out there? We didn't have a long time to get informed beforehand as, being foreigners and required to be in Florida at the time of sales, we had to decide on the spot.

I would be so grateful for any information about those cash rates.

DW and I have done at least 2 cruises partly on point and cash. The rate is higher than what you can get for a cruise at the date of release for general booking. As a cruise fills up, the rate can be lower for the 2nd through 4th persons.
You do know that if doing a cruise with points, the 1st person booked on the reservation is the person on points and if there name is changed after booking; the reservation will have to be canceled and rebooked.

DVC is usually charged a higher rate. Disney doesn't have any reason to discount the DVC rates and a few years ago they began charging an extra $95 fee.

If you signed your contract within the last 10 days, you can cancel and give yourself more time to learn before buying. You can also buy resale and save enough money for a free cruise.

Bill is smart. Cancel if you are within your ten days. Then find out more about DVC and make an educated decision to buy or not buy DVC.

Once you use points for one person, the cash rate is a discounted rack rate rumored to be around 10%. This is usually higher than the discounted rates when you pay cash. There are other negatives to using points +/- cash including the fact that if you have to cancel the points are no longer DVC points (limited use, exp end of UY) and that you must pay any cash price up front unlike simply a deposit for most cash reservations. The other component is you lose the ability to take advantage of any specials and future discounts such as a cabin credit. I have 3 cruises booked next year with 8 cabins for one of those. We've had a discounted applied on several occasions as the price changed. The current price for the first is almost double what we're booked for and the second (one with 8 cabins) is close to that as well. Plus we will have a cabin credit on EVERY cabin (all 10) for one reason or another.

Thanks for your answers. I have no intention to book a cruise on points anytime soon, I was just curious how this rate looks like as the salesman sounded very secretive about it.
We didn't cancel and are rather satisfied with the decision, it's just the jargon and all the rules I have to get used to.

It's really very simple, if it's using points for a cash type exchange, it's essentially always a bad deal. If it's using points for an RCI exchange it's usually a bad deal so make sure you investigate thorough prior.
