I was just online researching our plans for this coming June, when I noticed that the points required had increased by 6 points per night.

Example: OKW June 11-30 2009 30 points per night (sun - Thurs)

OKW June 11-30 2010 36 points per night (Sun - thurs)

I'm in shock....I laways understood that the dates of "seasons" might be adjusted slightly, but that the amount of points needed within the season would never change.

Somehow the value of my 290 points per year has decreased significantly, as I can no longer vacation the way I planned when I made the purchase.

Anyone have any thoughts or insight on this? Any help undrestanding this would be appreciated.

I believe that it is the amount of the points within one year that cannot change. For 2010, the point charts were adjusted at all resorts--basically requiring fewer points on weekends and higher points within the week. This was to encourage members who booked mainly Sun-Thurs to book more on weekends. However, the points for the entire year were to remain the same. As far as I know, seasonal points can be adjusted as long as it does not change the yearly total.

This was a reallocation of points allowed within our contracts. The total points for a unit for the year remain unchanged, which is all that is really promised. In general, in this reallocation the weekdays increased in points and weekend points were reduced. There was also some reallocation across seasons (minimal) at some resorts.

As already noted, DVC did a point reallocation due to an imbalance in demand. In most cases, the weekend nights (Fri & Sat) decreased and the Sun-Thur nights increased.

For your example, the 2 bedroom weekend nights in Magic Season went from 73 to 59 each.

For those who stay 7 nights, the points for a 2 bedroom in Magic season increased from 296 to 298.

Other seasons / other villa types had decreases in the weekly totals. Overall it balances out.

However, those who stay mostly Sun - Thur will need to spend more points to maintain their usual vacation patterns.

I'm going to refer everyone to the 2010 Reallocation Thread. There you'll find discussions of why the reallocation may have been necessary. Also, while this may be the first reallocation many DVCers may have experienced, there was an earlier reallocation at OKW in 1996.
