OK, Ive seen numerous conflicting reports on this. Heres the hypothetical

If I am a BCV owner with a March UY and I have another DVC Owner who owns VWL with a December UY transfer to my account 100 points. Once they enter my account are they on my UY and have to be used by March 05 or hers and have to be used by December 05 (these are 04 points). Further do they become BCV 11 month points when they hit my account or are they still WL 11 month points

Im so confused, I hope the hypo helps.

Thanks for the help

They are supposed to stay the original use year and keep the original home resort identity. Sometimes that doesn't happen according to reports on this Board.

I have had points transferred to me that kept their use year but the resort identity changed. (I didn't want it to and had to talk to a manager about fixing it). Others have reported the opposite happening when the transferred points kept the correct home resort but took ona new use year.

One thing you can do after a transfer is to request a print out of your activity. This will give you a written record of what has happned. Once youfigure it out, it can be very useful.

The reasons the reports conflict is because there are two completely different answers for each question.

Official rules say that transferred points retain home resort priority and use year. The problem is DVC computers are not set up to track this. The way the computer does it, the points become your home resort points. There have been conflicting reports as to use year and expiration, you should ask MS by email so you can have a written response. The other problem is that if the use year of the transferred points is different, it matters which use year of yours they transfer the points to. You may pay for transferred points that you can't use for what you want them for.

MS can track this manually and force the home resort and use year by doing it manually. So if it's important, plan it up front.

This could be a very interesting thread....

Okay, what about this scenario. Two people want to swap out 11 month ressies at different home resorts. Could we just transfer our points to each other and then make the ressies on our own, at the other person's home?

I had assumed that we would have to make ressies for each other, in the other person's name, keeping our own points.

It sounds like even though I own at XXX, as long as someone transfers in the points from YYY, I become a surrogate owner at YYY as far as the 11 month window is concerned. If this is correct, that is TOO COOL! Are there any downsides or concerns?(other than paying attention to use year limitations?)

Thanks!!!:D

In theory yes but as I've already pointed out, DVC isn't set up to handle this very well. Ideally is you'd like to use transferred points at the original home resort of the points. This is difficult to do at present. The other angle is you could buy "cheaper" points and transfer them to a more desirable contract and use the transfered points at the "better" home resort. This currently will USUALLY work but I'm sure DVC will correct that loophole soon.

And if you're trying to "swap" home resorts for a stay, that's still what I'd do.

In theory this is accurate. But be warned for a lot of hassles if you try this as DVC isn't set up to handle the points in that way.

As Dean correctly points out, the straight point swap is not possible under DVC point transfer rules. Notably I am hoping a BCV owner will want to do a ressie swap with my BWV tho, and have proposed such a swap on the Rent/Trade board for Food & Wine 2005. I am getting some interest, tho not an exact match for what I am hoping to do (matching ressies over Columbus Day wkend - BW view for BCV). It would seem to me that such an mtached swap would be much lower risk to both parties bcs if one party had to change plans, the other would still have the ressie at their home resort anyway (and I do love BWV, juat want to try BCV and SAB).

And HBC is correct, tho the points should retain both UY and home, they can lose either in the DVC computers. When I received some transferred points, the CM asked if we could just put them into my UY to make it easier in the computer.

Another note, and I don't know if this is official policy or not, but when I banked some transferred points, the CM told me that these points were outside of normal banking deadlines, and that as long as I had not passed my 25% mark, I could bank all my transferred points, regardless of how many I had banked previously. Maybe I misunderstood, but it seemed to me that this was what she said. Isn't that interesting?

Thanks. That is interesting. Every time I read something about point transfers, I learn something new.

So what Im getting is there is no answer to this question. We just have to take the transfer and then fight for which ever position we want with MS if they don't do what we wanted to begin with???

Doesn't that seem odd, I mean there are advantages to all these different positions I just wish I knew which I was getting into by accepting transferred points!!!

Does DVC have a specific "policy on this" which is just different in follow through at the computer point calculater level?? Do we know, Hey Webmaster this may be a question for you

First of all, there is official policy, as outlined above, and if that is advantageous to what you want to do, keep the CMs to that. If you want something different... well maybe shopping around CMs at MS might not be a bad idea.

In any case, however, the best way to assure the result you want is to do the transfer in a three-way call with MS (I suggest you arrange a time with the person transferring points, then call MS, give them your information, then have MS call the person transferring the points - they could call MS and then MS call you alternatively). The 3 way call will help you to be perfectly clear about where the points should go. If you don't mind if the points go to your UY and home resort, then perhaps just let the transferrer send the points to your account, and call MS a couple hours later to use them.

Good luck!

Could we just transfer our points to each other and then make the ressies on our own, at the other person's home?

This would probably not work because of one other restriction. You can only transfer points into OR out of your account in a given use year. This makes it difficult to swap home resort points with another member.
