point transfer question

I was hoping someone can help me understand the whole picture around transferring points and UY. I had originally planned to book our biannual trip for ** at ** with our points at 11 months out. Now my sisters have mentioned they would like to join us and we will need a ton more points. I have a dec UY so I do not get my 2010 points until Dec, but many people are already in 2010 year. I have inquired about transferring points from members with other use years. Do the points maintain their original use year? Can someone please help me so I can make sure I wind up with points I can actually use and do not miss our 11 month window? Thanks.

The transferred points retain the original use year and resort.....meaning if you want to book 11 months out then the points that you transfer must be from **.
Years ago this wasn't the case..transferred points would "morph" into whatever your resort/UY was.

Once they're in your account, you can bank or borrow but whatever you do they will still retain their original UY expiration. I hope this helps a bit.

Thanks everyone. I thought I had understood it right, but I started to panic as I was contacting someone about points. I just wanted to make sure that I was not wasting a lot of money.

Why not just have your sister rent a reservation from another member? Or use your points for the days you can get with them and then your sister gets another member to book at exactly 11 months out the remaining days you need. Then get MS to link the two reservations so you don't have to move.

Just a reminder here - details when discussing renting or transferring (such as dates, use year, resort, etc.) are not allowed so as not to be construed as a seeking points post.

Thanks all..

If you want to book at 11 months out be certain to get the points from the same resort also as well as the correct UY.

You will definitely want to be sure of what you're doing before you pay for and transfer the points. There is a subtlety here that was not explained to me when I first asked MS about transfers, but was told the second time I called (fortunately before I made a mistake). I think it has been referred to in another current thread. I will try to explain it, and then others can correct me. I think it's something like: you can only transfer current year points. Both the sender and the receiver of the points must be in the same year. So right now, since you have a December UY, you are in your 2009 year. As you said, everybody else is now in their 2010 year. So I think you want to wait until December to do it, and even then, I think you are better off finding someone with a UY that is close to yours, like October. People with a Feb UY are soon going to be in their 2011 year, and they are past their banking deadline, so their 2010 points are no good to you, anyway.

I don't think I did a good job explaining that. Anyone else want to try?

I believe that transferred points can be banked within the guidelines for banking so that may also play into your plans when trying to find the right points to transfer in.

I just did a transfer of points to someone.

When I called MS to ask the process to do this they told me "the points I am transferring must be coming from the same UY they are going into".

This worked for us because the person I transferred to has a Feb UY, I have a Dec UY. I was transferring some of my Dec 2010 UY points into her Feb 2010 UY. She was using the points for a Dec 2010 reservation, so it all worked out perfectly.

So it's not what UY you are currently in, the points just need to be coming out of and going into the same UY.

Of course as others have said, it also matters when the receiver plans on using the points, to be sure if they need to bank them, that they are still bank-abl etc.

Just to be clear, UY is used in your comment both for the year and the month. So you don't have to have the same UY month as the other person, you just have to be transferring from and to the same year. (For example, you could not have transferred her your Dec 2009 points, because she doesn't have a 2009 year anymore.)

Just want to correct this: You CANNOT borrow transferred in points, only bank.

Good catch, Laura. :thumbsup2 If someone wasn't that experienced in transfers, they could make a serious mistake.

What ever points you get have the same use/restrictions as the member that transfered to you. Say mine is April and you got that, you'd have all the same use as me and the reverse your to me say your was September. Good luck
