I had a reservation with borrowed points that got canceled for a wait list reservation with fewer points. The system used my borrowed points and returned my current uy points.

Is there any way to use my 2020 points for the reservation and return the 2021 points? Would member services be able to help?
 
The current covid-related rule is that borrowed points in an existing reservation which is cancelled will be returned to their original use year. However, for that to happen takes about a week after cancellation and if you immediately reuse the borrowed points before then they will stay in the new reservation.

Thus, the covid rule does not apply to your situation because what occurred was not a cancellation and then the passage of a week to have the borrowed points returned to their original use year, but instead just a modification of your original reservation to your wait list reservation, for which the reservation system automatically uses any borrowed points before any current use year points.

In essence, under the current covid-related rule, you would need to actually cancel your current reservation and then wait about a week for the borrowed points to be returned to their use year before you do another reservation

Nevertheless, you might contact MS and explain your situation to se if it will make an exception.

Those borrowed points are pretty much “locked” into the reservation. The only way for you to free them up would be to cancel, book a dummy reservation using them, re-book the original reservation using the current UY’s points and then cancelling the dummy reservation. Then wait for the borrowed points to be returned as per the current policy (which could end at any time).

I’m not sure whether Member Services has some kind of magical way to reallocate the points used. The standard procedure is to use banked, then borrowed and then current UY points.

The only way borrowed points can be returned, as mentioned, is if they are sitting in the account.

I had the same situation, and I tried more than 5 times, got it escalated and was told the system uses borrowed and banked before current and it can’t be changed,

I could have canceled, had them return, and try to rebook, but it was a risk since my night was not available.

Normally, borrowed points don’t go back, so as long as you have a use for them, they get used first.
 

That’s what I figured, but thought I’d ask here before calling. I don’t think it’s worth the risk of canceling and rebooking, so I’ll bank the points and make sure we book a trip

That is what I ended up doing too. It was not many, SSR points, and I had plenty other returned, including some unexpected ones, so in the end, it worked.
