Point Chart Inflation

http://i235.*************************************Resorts/Points/PointChartInflation.png

I am closing this thread and moving this conversation over to this new thread:

Why does it take more points per stay at newer resorts (point inflation)?

Thanks.

Over the years, as DVC released the point charts for each new DVC resort, we've all noticed the number of points necessary to reserve a room at the new resorts has been creeping up, when compared to the older resorts.

I put together some quick visual representations. These show the points for WDW resorts.

to be fair, hawaii and california are expensive and it should naturally cost more to stay on the monorail. AKV has a number of reasonably priced standard view rooms. OKW and BWV are most notable for being good values, with SSR the stinker in being slightly more expensive per night than it should be (it should only cost slightly more than OKW - and after the most recent re-allocation, it's not as bad as it used to be).

Since we became Owners in 2008--Kidani Villas--we have seen the points for the value studio @ Jambo House go up for Sun. through Thurs., yet decline for a week's total. It dropped to only 69 points for one week in the value studio in the Nov./Dec. season. We only have 100 points, so this is awesome for us. In 2009, we booked the Beach Club Villas studio for a mere 12 points per night ( Sun.-Thurs). Now it's 16 points per night for the same season! With the points' inflation, we cannot stretch our 100 points enough, anymore, outside of the value studio. We booked cash DVC-discounted nights--BCV studio for May 2016.

About ten years ago the weekend nights were about double the points that the week days were. We were happy to see over the course of about 3 years that they evened them up a bit. Probably because of all the locals that wanted to come for long weekends--- or maybe there was too much availability on the weekends.

Here at Poly, we both think the lake view studios are well worth it!

I updated post #1 to add 1-BR, 2-BR, and GV charts.

What I noticed at Aulani is that they changed the dates for the seasons. We used to have the entire month of June for the rate we were willing to pay (bought points based on this time period), and now they shortened it and I can barely make it there before the pnts go up for the same room. I am a teacher and cannot travel before school is out, so it has made it almost impossible for me to travel there in June. Has this happened at the WDW resorts, where they changed the dates around?

The DVC News did an article explaining the changes in the point chart for Aulani. The Choice Season has always fluctuated on the end date, if you look back in time you will see that Choice Season ended on June 23 in 2013. The Choice Season ends with the last Sunday in June, it always has and it continues to do so. You might find if you select a different year you will have more days in the Choice Season. BTW, if you check out wdrl's article at the DVC News you will that points per night were lowered for more accommodation types. Island view really shows up as having lower points per night during the Choice season.

I think part of the reasoning behind them readjusting the difference in points between Sun-Thu vs. Fri- Sat was the way people were booking. There were many members who were booking 1 br Sun-Thu & then moving to Studios for Fri-Sat then moving back to 1 br for the next Sun-Thu. Some people even go as far as booking EPCOT area villas Sun-Thu then moving to OKW or SSR for Fri-Sat to save points. This was making it necessary for mousekeeing to do full cleanings on villas 2 & 3 times each week rather than the normal T&T on the fourth day & full cleaning on the eigth. Much cheaper from an operational stand point to stick to the normal schedule then doing full cleanings of the same unit multiple times each week. I personally don't like having split stays but there are those willing to work the system to get the longest time for the least amount of overall points. But this taxes not only mousekeeing but also bell services & front desk with all the guests doing multiple check-in during their stays.

I never noticed that! I thought they cut it short. Thanks for letting me know that.

When OKW opened, Studios in Adventure Season were 7 points per night and 1BRs were 14 points per night. Those were later revised upwards when the weekends were lowered/weekdays raised this happened a couple of times over the years with similar reallocation made. Until 2008, OKW was the only resort to undergo a reallocation.

Here is info from a 2008 discussion thread about the point chart reallocation for DVC - this is specific to OKW:

Beginning in 1996, the points needed for the various villa types was changed from the original. Some nights went up a few points and some went down. Weekday Points for a GV in Adventure and Choice Seasons went up considerably.

Points listed are for Studio, 1BR, 2BR, GV (weekday/weekend) respectively from 1991 thru 1995:

Adventure Season: 7/17 , 14/35 , 19/47 , 31/77

Choice Season: 8/21 , 17/42 , 23/57 , 37/92

Dream Season: 10/25 , 20/50 , 27/67 , 45/112

Magic Season: 11/28 , 23/57 , 31/77 , 52/130

Premier Season: 15/38 , 31/77 , 42/105 , 68/170

1996 - 2008 point needs:

Adventure: 8/20 , 16/40 , 22/54 , 36/88

Choice: 8/21 , 18/41 , 24/56 , 38/91

Dream: 10/24 , 20/48 , 27/64 , 45/107
