I was interested in buying a point and shoot camera...

I've had a few friends recommend the Sony cybershot... thoughts?

I want something that can take video, and i quick to turn on and snap a picture.

years ago i had the Kodak easyshare...that was S L O W...it took f o r e v e r to turn on and the battery life was terrible. I'm sure the easyshare has come along way...so if anyone has that...thoughts?

What are you thoughts on the Canon P&S?

any and all info would be appreciated!!

THANKS!!
Jenna

ive owned 3 canon ps as well as the new consumer dSLR i now own. They were all great, but kodak isnt bad either. The reason yours was slow is because it was old and probably on the low end of cameras.

Now cheaper ones are better, but its generally true you get what you pay for in cameras. A cheap canon will be better than your old kodak, but so will a new cheap kodak. For ps i liked having some control, like aperture or shutter speed, just so i could do some more creative things, i used the higher end canon powershot for that, but its not tiny. If you really want to just shoot video and quick pics the lens size of the bigger ps and options wont be of help to you.

There is a multitude that will fit that, and i'd probably go to the store and just try mid range cameras and pick the one that felt the best in my hand and had a menu i liked (i really like the canon menus because i know them, you might be different). They are all quite different and even best buy will let you see the menus if you dont want to go to a camera store.

if you want something a little fancier i'd look at the higher end powershots, im not certain was the newest model numbers are, but could look em up if thats your interest, let me know :).

Sony cybershot with Carl Zeiss lens
Canon S3 or S5IS
Panansonic Lumix

BTW - the name 'Cybershot', like 'Powershot' and 'Easy Share', are broad product names for each division's compact camera division. So there are actually dozens of models of each of those, often varying greatly in size, features, and price. Just an FYI!

You'll do fine with most brands out there, to be quite honest. If you want small, rectangular, and solid performers with some manual control available, look at Canon's SD line, Sony's W line, Fuji's F-S line, or Panasonic's TZ range. If you want super-slim, pocketable, with non protruding lenses which have more style, but lighter on the manual controls, look at Sony's T-line, or Nikon's S60. If you want cheap point-and-shoot with mostly auto mode, check out Sony's S line, Canon's A line, or Panasonic's FS line.

I've had good experience so far with two Sonys in a row...an ultra-compact L1 (out of production) and my current T100 (now up to T500). I am an avid photographer, and love my DSLR and manual controls, but I didn't need that from a compact camera. I just wanted something slim, pocketable, and stylish that took good photos and had good features for when I didn't want to carry the big camera kit along...manual controls weren't needed. The red brushed metal slimline camera with interior folding optics and slide-down cover fit the bill.

I love my Nikon DSLR...I just want something thats reliable, quick and portable...for the same reason of not lugging a big camera around.

Thanks for the input...i'll definitely look into those cameras. Im heading over to best buy after work tonight.
:)

If I were in the market for a smaller P&S, I'd get a Panasonic TZ5.
