PODs vs. traditional movers

We are facing an upcoming move but do not know where we will be moving yet. I'm starting to gather information and was wondering if anyone has compared PODs versus traditional movers. Did you find one to be significantly more expensive than the other? We are happy to pack and unpack our stuff with PODs if it saves us money. Any good/bad feedback about PODs? I know the costs will vary depending on where you move, but just looking to see how they differ within any one destination.

I've moved a couple of times using PODS, but both times involved storing my stuff for a few months instead of immediately being able to unpack when I got to the new city. So my price comparison involved a pod vs truck and storage. I figured that if my storage time was around 3 months or less, I would end up saving money using the pod for the move, but for a longer storage needs it would have been cheaper to use uhaul and a regular storage unit. If you're planning to use a truck, don't forget to add in fuel costs as they can add up with the bigger trucks. Plus with only 2 drivers (DW and myself), if we had used a uhaul truck, we still would've had to move a truck, suv, boat and motorcycle at the same time...so it made sense for us to use them for that reason as well.

I have only moved with a moving company once and that was paid for by a new employer. I was very unhappy with the moving company and the 'care' that was shown to my things. Never again for me. I move myself.

I used a PODS for a local move and it was awesome. I took a couple of weeks to fill it at old house. It was picked up before our closing date, and then redelivered at new house a couple of days later. I would gladly do this again.

On a time-critical move, they were not able to deliver my POD to its destination on the needed date, even though they picked it up several days before. Though it was in the same state, they had to hand it off to another POD franchise (could not directly deliver). This was not explained up front and is just something to keep in mind as you are planning your move, if there are some time-critical issues.

This morning we just unloaded 7 feet of space on an ABF upack truck. This was the 2nd time we used them, and my parents have used them twice. They drop a 28' trailer, so it is bigger than a pod, you fill it, they drive it, you unload it. For price comparison, our 7' from Orlando, FL to Denver, CO was $1600. When my parents moved from WA to FL, they filled 3 trucks, and it was by far the cheapest option considering pods or traditional moves.

They also have relocubes which are like pods, but smaller.

Pods seem expensive to me because we would need to make multiple trips, and they charge for each trip. We might even need 3 trips based on the size of the Pod. ( at least I believe that our quite was from Pods )
