I wish I had found this board last year. Back then I had not been able to visit Disney for two years. (New job, few days off, teens, etc.) My banked points were about to expire, so I exchanged them into RCI - thinking it would buy me two years to use the points. So this year, I have banked points (again), the possible RCI exchange, my current years points and no vacation leave.

If I sell the membership (is it like selling an organ?), then the RCI exchange is gone. When I call member services, there is never availability at RCI. I just read about transfering points - this seems like what I should have done last year. What do you think? I would prefer to transfer points if I could recoup my expenses and hold onto membership. Is this really feasible? Or should I sell now, when the buyer would get the banked and current year points?

Sorry to drag on, I am very conflicted about this.:headache:

It's against DVC rules to transfer points for money.

If your membership is of no value to you, then you should probably sell. The commission to most Brokers is 10% so get ready for the hit.

I am in no position to give advice, but since its still early(in the morning that is) Ill give a lil (because when the disers wake up I think you will get several better and well educated responses t o your dilemma)...

...first of dvc is an expensive piece of baggage to be totting around and if you are not using it or enjoying it then why carry that load???

...some will say that trading out is not in your best interest as far as dvc goes...and really transfering points is really not big of a financial gain although it is useful....

...and many will say do your research before you buy into dvc (annoying grandma voice)...

....and I say if its useless get rid of it...unless you just want to give it to me because I love all things disney and would put your points to good use...

GOOD LUCK in what ever you decide

I dont know about selling and what happens to the RCI privlages... but you could use the rent/trade boards here to try and sell some of your near expiring points.

While technically you cant exchange cash for a points transfer, it seems to happen all the time from what I gather on these boards (just dont let the cast member know when u are calling DVC to make the transfer). $10/pt seems to be the prevailing rate.

As far as selling DVC goes, check this board out about what the contracts are actually selling for. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1960185&page=130

As stated previously, you would be on the hook for a 10% commission on this sale price.

As a buyer of DVCs on the resale market, I find loaded contract (those with current and prior year points) to be the most attractive. That said, I dont think sellers are fairly compensated for those additional points - but those contracts generally do sell fast (so maybe that is where the compensation is).

Good luck w you decision.

You should rent the points and not bank to RCI if you can plan ahead enough to do so. My understanding is you lose your RCI options the minute the transfer is completed just like existing DVC reservations are canceled.

I don’t know if it makes senses to own DVC for you but if you decided to rent I can say it is easy. I just rented points out for the first time. It took less than 24hr to all 500 of them rented and transferred. I had to e-mail about 10 to 12 people that I no longer had any points for rent at $10 a point.

One thing you may want to think about is when do you think you would be able to use your DVC?

Thanks for all your comments.

We have used the points in the past - four trips to WDW - and really love the spacious two bedrooms. At least one of my kids DEFINATELY wants to keep going (when I mentioned selling to her yesterday, she's was practically distraught).

I think exchanging into RCI was the mistake. Had I been here (on the forum), I would have rented those points. And not be in this financial conundrum, where I've spent maintenance for the RCI exchange and not used the membership for WDW for 2 years.

Right now, I'm thinking I should rent the banked points, try to use the RCI (or give it to a family member) and make rez for WDW next year. Does that make sense?

I think that sounds like a good plan. Remember you can use your points for cruises. Any way you can sneak in a three night cruise for yourself! It isn't always the best use of points, but it is a good option if you are going to lose the points. But renting is a good option as well! Good luck!

It is a very bad time to sell now and it is a total buyers market. I think you will get more for your membership if you can hold onto it a year or two longer. If you sell now the buyer will get two years of points: the banked points and the current points. It's a very tasty contract and you might be able to arrange it where the buyer will pay your 2009 and 2010 maintenance since they are getting double the points.

The other option is to keep the contract and rent what you can. You can rent out the points right here on the DIS fairly easily. Especially since you have two years worth and many people need a lot of points for their reservation. It's a bit of work to rent points but worth it if you're not using them. As for the RCI trade ... maybe you will have to rent that too. You might have to make a "speculation" booking and then rent the week on eBay. At least you'll get something for it, KWIM?
