Hi!
My basement has flooded twice in the last month due to heavy rains overwhelming the sewers. We have 3 areas that flood: the shower in the bathroom (always last), the drain under the wash basin in the utility room (always first not covered at all), and a "drain" in the finished area that is covered (floods second).

We have no sump pump. The house was built in the 50s.
I am looking at types of drain plugs and other alternatives. The flooding has not been excessive. The worst was about 6 inches near the drain. It didn't make it to the walls in most spots.

I want to try the least expensive option first so I read about floor drain plugs and float plugs for the utility drain. I'm also concerned with the "sealed" drain in the finished area that keeps leaking. I assume I'll need a plumber for that.

Any Advice?

TIA!!

When our old town experienced some sewer back up like that many people installed stop valves that would close those drains. The only draw back is that IF you have even heavier rain and your sewer doesn't back up in your basement it WILL come out of other openings like your toilets. It has to be fairly extreme for that but it can happen. Having a sump pump isn't going to do anything for that kind of water back up.

One thing that a lot of people did was to drop a tennis ball in the drain. They said that helps with minor back up. I don't know if it really does or not but I know a lot of people that did that.
