Pls inform me about Jehovah Witness

They don't celebrate anything because they are a cult, a false religion trying to spread their version of heresy.

Your absolent intolerence of other religions are the same type of religious views as practiced by the extremists in the Middle East that blow up children.

Anne

It very sad when someone posts a legitimate question and the thread turns into something ugly.

2funny2c,
Just what is your religion of choice? :confused3

I may not agree with other peoples beliefs, however, I am thrilled that we live in a country where religious, political and social tolerance is practiced. If we all were willing to learn about other ideas, maybe there would be less hatred in this world.

To help answer the OP's question, here are a few very brief reasons why Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate "holidays", including the scriptures in the Bible where the info is located:

Christmas and Easter: Jesus was not born on December 25. He was born about October 1, a time of year when shepherds kept their flocks out-of-doors at night. (Luke 2:8-12) Jesus never commanded Christians to celebrate his birth. Rather, he told his disciples to memorialize, or remember, his death. (Luke 22:19,*20) Christmas and its customs*come from ancient false religions. The same is true of Easter customs, such as the use of eggs and rabbits. The early Christians did not celebrate Christmas or Easter, nor do true Christians today.

Birthdays: The only two birthday celebrations spoken of in the Bible were held by persons who did not worship Jehovah God. (Genesis 40:20-22; Mark 6:21, 22, 24-27) The early Christians did not celebrate birthdays. The custom of celebrating birthdays comes from ancient false religions. True Christians give gifts and have good times together at other times during the year.

Thank You SeaSpray ~ This is the kind of info I was looking for.

A lot of people tend to speak down on things they don't understand. Unfortunately, it's human nature.

Yikes :earseek: ...that was pretty harsh wasn't it?!
We have students who are JW and they will not stand for the national anthem nor will they attend Remembrance Day services. They also do not celebrate holidays such as birthdays, Christmas, halloween---they do not come to school on these days when there is a party or something. The families around here do buy them lots of gifts just after Christmas but then they say they are not for Christmas :confused3
As for the reason, I really don't know..........

Not as a slam to the religion, but is tough when there is a JW in your childs classroom. In our school since the ONE student cannot celebrate the holidays then NO-ONE in the class can. A little harsh I think. My DS has had the same student in his class the last two years and they have had no school celebrations. Yes, I DO understand that that is not why they are in school, but in order to respect that one childs belief the other kids cannot celebrate theirs.

And your tolerance of Christians is the same as the Romans that would lead the Christians to the arena to be killed for sport.

That's where you are wrong. I am tolerant of all religions, even those that some might find offensive, provided they do no harm to other people.

Judge not that yee not be judged.

My husbands whole family (parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, etc) are all JW. My father-in-law holds a very high position in the congreation and gives lots of the talks and that sort of thing. My husband was raised as a JW, but stopped practicing when he left home after high school. He had stopped believing quite some time before that.

I LOVE my husband's family. They are the best inlaws anybody could ask for. They are kind, supportive, interested in our lives - but not pushy. They are funny, intelligent, very well educated and well read. They have never pushed thier lifestyle or religious choices on us, or even mentioned it at all, for that matter. They have a wonderful relationship with my son and he is the absolute light of their lives.

Do they wish that we followed their religion? I'm sure they do. Just like a Christian family might be sad that their son ended up an athiest, or whatever. They have never brought it up, though, and it has caused no tenion or had feelings on either side. As far as what I think about their belief system, personally, I don't think what they believe is any stranger than what anybody else believes. :confused3

They do not celebrate any holidays or birthdays, for the reasons explained above. They do celebrate the birth of a new baby. Weddings and anniversaries are also very big deals. They also do not vote, pledge to the flag, or anything that has to do with government.

I don't know why the one guy mentioned would avoid company picnics and all of that, unless they are built around a holiday - like a Labor Day picnic, etc. I would guess he just doesn't like that kind of thing.

Oh, the best part about having JW inlaws is that we only have one side of the family to buy Christmas gifts for, we never had to worry about forgetting their birthdays, and we don't have to argue over who's family we are spending the holidays with. It's the best! :rotfl:

I am happy to listen to other views, however this particular poster doesn't post anything but hate and religious extremism. They have never offered their religious preference, or any rational backup to their statements.

You seem to have the concepts of judgement & discernment confused. Do an indepth study on the two and you will see there is a difference.

False religions such as JW and LDS that lead people away from the true message of our Lord and Savior do the ultimate harm to other people.

I think that this is wrong. In our school, the children who were JW could choose to "opt out" of holiday activities, go to the library, read a book, go home, etc., but they certainly couldn't prohibit the rest of the class from having a celebration. Your school seems to push "pc" to the edge here.

Perhaps in the religion you practice. But who are you to impose your religious beliefs on others or condemn them for their beliefs? What says taht your denomination is the only true or chosen one? After all, all Christians worship the same God. I and I.

Anne

I had an employee once who was JW. He said they don't celebrate things like birthdays, etc. because every day is considered a holiday.

People that spew ignorance and intolerance do ultimate harm to other people - and to their own religion.

I wouldnt call comparing me and my faith to those people who blow up children trying to foster any kind of rational discussion.

I answered the OP's question. They dont celebrate the events in question because they are a false religion. Its pretty cut & dry.

Actually, JW is a christian religion. Just clarifying. As mentioned, I left the religion for personal reasons that I'd rather not get into right now, but my mother, aunt and sister are still JWs. My ex-husband's family is too and I still keep in contact with them from time to time. Even though I choose not to be a part of it anymore, I still have a lot of respect for them. Just as I have respect for people of other religions.

Sounds like that poster's mommy never taught them simple manners.

True Christians? Excuse me!?!?? That is a rather harsh statement. SO all the churches out there are not believing in Christ? And following the teachings of Jesus?Let see I believe in Jesus Christ, I attend church reguarly and I celebrate Christmas with a tree, santa and presents! I also celebrate the birth our lord! I celebrate Easter for the resurection and I love easter basket and decorated eggs.....But according to you I am not a "real" I am sorry but your comment really really offended me.
Well Back to decorating! And putting up my tree and oh yes all my santa's and snow men! And my nativities......
talk about not being tolerant!

Some people just like to argue for argument's sake. They simply like to stir the pot and then sit back and watch. It must be a form of entertainment for them.

I, for one, am glad that I read this thread. DD has a classmate that is a JW and I had no real knowledge of their belief system. Now I know.

Thank you to the OP for asking the question.

JW may or may not be a "false religion" but I doubt that "fact" has anything to do with them not celebrating holidays or birthdays. One has nothing to do with the other.

I could be wrong, but I believe the info you're quoting is just cut and pasted from JW info, and not necessarily the poster's viewpoint.
