I know NOTHING about the resorts at Universal. The Loews reservationist could help me by defining the differences in the resorts. The rates for April are:

Portfino $299
Hard Rock $249
Royal Pacific $219 (I think this is a water view, the rest are standard)

So, where should I stay? Are there big differences in these hotels? Are they all like the Deluxe resorts at Disney? Help!

When are you going? An entertainment card will get you your best discount 99.00 at Royal Pacific, 125.00 at Hard Rock and 150.00 at the Portofino. All are very, very, very nice resorts. I rate them better than the Disney Hotels I have stayed at(All Stars, Coronado Springs and CBR) The entertainment rate might not be available at all times at all three locations, just ask reservationist if it's not available at one, then check the other.
We stayed at the Portofino this last May because Hard Rock was unavailable with the entertainment rate, and the new one was not open yet, just opened this June--nice.
Portofino was very nice, and I would compare it to a Disney Deluxe resort. The boat system is great to the parks, and you get front of the line access to most of the rides when you stay on site, it cannot be beat!!!!! It had a great pool, with a white sand beach.

We are going in April 2003, right after our Disney Cruise. I don't think they have discounts out yet. I just know it is spring break time and I did not want to be stuck off-site.

So, you think I should get an Entertainment card? How much are they?

Entertainment books vary in price depending on the city. You can buy the book for your local city and use it for restaurant and other discounts at home. The hotel discounts are the same in all the books. The Entertainment rate is not always available. They also offer Fan Club discounts and AAA discounts. Call and see what's available for your dates.

Any thoughts on which hotel? Why are they different prices? Is there a noticeable difference in quality between them?

kpgclark:
It sounds like you were quoted rack rates. The possible available discounts are AAA, Annual Pass, Entertainment card, airline employee and TA. You could also try calling Universal to see if they have any discounts in their systems yet, I think it's 1800uescape.

The Portofino is very beautiful, elegant but not stuffy. We've been there twice with our kids, ages 5+9, then 2 years later, also just dh and I, and once a solo trip for me. It is a quiet hotel, too much so for some but just right for us after a long noisy day at the parks! There are some terrific restaurants there. Nice pool with white sand "beach", zero depth, small but zippy slide. You can get to the parks by water taxi (about 5 min) or bus or by walking (about 10-15 min). Even the standard rooms are large and contain a king or 2 queen beds, an armoire with mini bar, tv, and drawers. The bathrooms are huge with tile and marble. The beds are incredibly comfortable and are high enough off the floor to store luggage underneath. This is considered Universal's most upscale hotel.

Hard Rock Hotel is more lively place, with low volume rock music playing everywhere except in the rooms. There are activities like a life size chess set too. The pool is very large, zero depth but only about 3ft at it's deepest part. I didn't get to go on the slide but it's large! During the summer and busier times there seems to be more special activities going on. The restaurant choices are few but you are a short walk from Citywalk, where there is a huge selection of places to eat. One of HRH's best features is the short walk to Universal Studios. If you take the short cut through the pool area it's only about 5 min to the gate. Another 3 or so to IOA gates. I stayed there once on club level and shared a room with a friend. The beds were very comfortable. We loved being able to zip back during the day to freshen up or have a snack. You can still take a water taxi or bus too. HRH is considered the "mid-level" (for lack of a better term).

The Royal Pacific is the least expensive of the three.

Check back every so often for discounts. Good luck, hope this helps.

NHRENEE- Thanks so much for all the great information. I appreciate the effort that went into that long response.

Is there a noticeable difference in the quality or ammenities of these resorts? Is the newest one just as close to the parks as the older ones? The newest one is a lot less expensive. Is it more like a Disney moderate?

Well, in terms of room size, service, etc; , the more $$ the more plush the hotel, bigger rooms, cushier funishings, etc. But it's not like going from a Ritz Carlton to a motel 6. The pictures of the pool/common area at the RP seems nice.

I haven't stayed at Disney on-site so I can't help you there. There are people staying at RP now, I believe so we should be hearing from people soon!

Am I just confusing you?
 :D

The Hard Rock Hotel is the closest to the parks. It's an easy walk from there. The other two hotels are a bit further, but provide boat and shuttle transporation.
The rooms at the RP (new hotel) are a bit smaller than the others. They are all Loew's hotels, so none of them will be bad.
