Pleasure Island Jazz Company

I guess this is the right place for this question. Has anyone spent much time here? Is this good jazz? And by good jazz, I mean not "smooth jazz", i.e., anything that sounds Kenny G-ish, but real jazz, in the tradition of Miles, Coltrane, etc.

I like all sorts of jazz, and blues, don't get me wrong, I just can't take that fake "jazz" they play in doctor's offices. I may be bringing my parents, who are big jazz fans, and I don't want to disappoint them.

This is mostly a bump.

I have seen some posts about jazz (probably trad) combos at the GF, MK and on the Boardwalk. Whenever we have come across such items in teh parks they are really quite good, though all too brief. The Dapper Dans (barbershop qt) in MK are also very good and are usually on the schedule.

When we travel we sometimes have our 7 year old son (jonathan at http://www.jonathanjazz.com) sit in with jazz bands. He also plays for his dessert at Whispering Canyon at WL.

Hi etail-- Jonathan must me amazing! I'll keep track of your website, I'd love to come hear him some time (I'm just over here in Boerum Hill.) It might inspire my five year old, who is often "bored" with her piano lessons-- she has a lot of jazz musicians in her extended family, so maybe there is a little pressure.

DH is a jazz fan and he loves this place! They have different artists come in from week to week. Some are more famous than others, but if you call ahead, they could probably tell you who you could expect to see. When we were there a man named "Elliot Dyson" was there both nights. I am not a big jazz fan, but truly enjoyed our evenings here as well. Please give it a try. I think you'll be pleased!

DS is majoring in jazz studies in college, and will soon be going with us to DW for his brother's graduation trip. Since obviously, Matt loves jazz, he wants to go to Pleasure Island Jazz Co. What time does the live music start-7:30, 8:00, 9:00??? And how busy is the club?

BTW, Elliot Dyson used to perform at POFQ several evenings a week at the Scatt Cat Lounge. I think he also plays at Universal (Blues Brothers Band?) He's terrific.
