I have a cold. I try to keep my hands washed, I don't rub my eyes or put my hands on my face near my mouth or nose, I don't eat or drink after other people, I wash my hands after using the restroom and before eating, I carry hand sanitizer with me and use it often, and yet, I have caught a cold.

Please people! Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, preferably with a tissue, and wash your hands, don't sneeze or cough near food or other people, wash your hands after using the restroom, don't rub or pick your nose and then hand me change. In short, try to keep your germs to yourself and I'll try to keep mine with me!

If you have to cough, you have to cough. Sometimes you can't hold it in until you can go to an area where other's aren't around ;)

Oh, and maybe you are going overboard on the sanitizing. You build up resistence to germs by not going overboard ;)

Oh, and OP, are you staying home under quarantine until your cold goes away? :teeth:

But you can cover your mouth or at least cough into your arm and teach your children to do likewise. No one wants your projectile germs on them or on anything they will have to touch.

While I don't expect to avoid colds entirely, not with a ten-year-old who spends 7 hours a day with a school full of other kids and not when I ride public transportation every day, but I can deal with catching a cold better than I can deal with someone giving me a cold through their poor sanitary habits.

Like the OP said "try to keep your germs to yourself and I'll try to keep mine with me!"

thanks for the public service announcement... popcorn::

In the store the other day, one guy was walking around coughing, making no attempt to keep his germs to himself...I think it's people like this the OP is complaining about...with good reason.

Just to let you know if you frequently use hand sanitizer it could be the very reason you have a cold. It wipes out 99.9% of bacteria - bad bacteria and also the good bacteria that naturally wipe out the bad ones. It also causes bacteria to become resistant. Good old soap and water is a more flora-friendly alternative.

I am aware of the need to build up a resistance to germs and the effect too much sanitizing can have. I don't feel that I go overboard with it.
However, I am talking about the people luvwinnie referred to who make no attempt to keep their germs to themselves. To me, it's a matter of common courtesy to do your best not to spread your germs around, and, yes, to teach your children to do the same. Surely no one can disagree with that.

I don't disagree with you. I also think that no one can disagree with the fact that some people are just plain gross.

Often, cold germs get spread before symptoms show up. What then? :confused3

Maybe your overreliance on antibacterial gel has caught up with you.

How about this: even if you don't think you have a cold, make every effort not to share your germs with anyone else. Wash your hands. Keep your bodily fluids from becoming airborne or getting on things that others may need to use, such as a photocopier or door handle or elevator button. Don't do something that you wouldn't want someone serving you food to do. As far as I'm concerned, its common courtesy whether you are sick or not.

It's just a cold.

While I don't go overboard with sanitizing myself every hour of the day, I still try to keep pretty clean, and I always manage to catch 1-2 colds a year. Such is life.

I agree Jrsy Boy. Well said.

As far as it being just a cold, I'm not so young anymore. I don't bounce back
from colds as quickly as I once did when I was younger, and the options I have
for cold relief medicine are limited since I am both diabetic and have
heart problems. I can't just take some nyquil and go to bed, so a cold for me now is a much bigger deal then it was when I was in my 20's or 30's.

I agree with the OP, too many people are inconsiderate. They go out shopping when they or their kids are sick, don't bother to cover a sneeze or cough. I work in retail and have low immunity. I just wish people would show common courtesy to others. Don't bring your kids out shopping when they don't feel good. It isn't fair to them or me. I am not talking about a run to the grocery store because you need medicine or milk. I am talking about the people who spend an hour in a store just browsing. When I worked in a baby store we had a customer come in with her child covered in Chicken Pox, and not scabbed over. She didn't need anything -I can't remember what she bought but I know it was not a necessity, meanwhile her child looked awful. :confused3 If they are too sick to go to school, they are too sick to shop! Sorry if I am ranting a bit, it is a sore subject for me because I see it so often. I think it is the antibacterial soap that makes gerrms resistant.
