The weather looks really rough for our cruise in 10days. Love to hear your experiences good and bad. Thank you :)

Well, on one of our Alaska cruises (not DCL) it was so rough one night that the captain announced "Ladies, no high heels for dinner tonight!". Sign posted on door to outside deck:

On our Hawaii cruise (DCL this time) the water was splashing all the way up to the windows by Guest Services (deck 3):

All that being said, I had no problem with the rough seas. And, yes, I did wear my high heels to dinner.

We were on the Wonder (Galveston to Cozumel) for NYE and a lot of people said it was one of the roughest cruises they've taken. Even a crew member looked outside and said, "Oooh, this is really bad." (Not sure if he realized that we could all hear him.). Several people stayed in their cabins because they were sea sick. Some brought their own medicine, but others went to the gift shop to buy those acupressure bands and motion sickness meds.

I personally didn't get sick, but today (2 days later) still feel a little off balance. Despite all of that, we enjoyed our cruise and can't wait to go back.

I would say that if you tend to get seasick, bring meds with you.

We were also on the NYE Wonder out of Galveston, and we encountered a front on the way back. The Captain said the waves would be about 12 feet and winds were 45 knots. Well, I think the waves were higher than that just by looking at how high up the water was splashing and how much we were rocking. But my husband and I loved it, it was like being rocked to sleep! The problem we did have though, was how noisy the room was....creaking, banging and winds howling! We noticed they drained all the pools because the water was sloshing so much, too! And like the PP, I too am still feeling unbalanced!

On our way back to Galveston in October we encountered Tropical Storm Karen's 10 foot swells, thankfully the worst of it came in the middle of the night so everyone was in their cabins by then and I'm still not sure if we were asked to stay there or not I think there was some kind of announcement but I was drifting in and out of sleep so I'm not really sure. You could feel the ship moving a lot more then usual and it did require a dramamine for me eventually but it was not too bad overall, I was still able to sleep through it even though it was a restless sleep.

RCCL out of Galveston, a cold front blew through, seas so rough that all outside decks were closed.

People were sick all over. We stayed in our cabin.

Rough seas happen, you just have to learn to rock and roll.

On an October 2012 cruise to the Bahamas, we were facing seas so rough, they changed the order of the day at Nassua with a CC day (causing major drama for people who had arranged non DCL excursions). And rough enough at CC day that we were only allowed off the ship for 2ish hours before a wind storm blew in and we were rocking, docked for the remainder of the day

A few years ago we followed a storm/blizzard up the East Coast for the last 2 days of our cruise (RCCL EOS). The waters started getting rough in Florida and by the time we got to New Jersey there was 2 fresh feet of snow on the ground. Most passengers and most crew did not make it to dinner the final night. They were reporting over 60 foot swells on the last day. It was very disorienting and I don't get sea sick or anything like that.

That is the worst I have personally seen on a cruise, but waters like that are far from the norm. Waters in the Carib are generally much smoother than those in the Atlantic or Pacific. Unless you are dealing with a bad storm, the waters in the Carib are smooth like glass.

Disney Magic, Dec 8th, 2007 sailing to the Eastern Caribbean. On the first and second sea days, we caught the edge of TS Olga on the way out to St Maarten. Captain announced 30 foot seas and all the live shows and even the bars were closed. Pools were closed - almost all the water was splashed out of them, deck 4 promenade was closed. We had a veranda on deck 6 mid-ship, and were getting sea spray on our balcony.

It cleared up by the time we got to St Maarten, the morning pulling into dock was partly cloudy and pretty windy, but by the time we got to the beach, the weather was perfect and the sun was shining.

Crew were getting sea sick, and the wait staff was struggling to deliver food and drinks in the dining rooms. All the free travel medicine handouts were gone from the medical area.

The ship was creaking and groaning all night between the two sea days.

Before they closed the promenade, my son and I walked up to the bow on Deck 4 and had fun jumping up right when the bow would break a roller, and seem to float for quite some time before landing. Almost like jumping up when an express elevator starts to descend.

Yeah the 10/2012 Sandy Fantasy Cruise. Ah, .... memories.

If this occurred in daylight and the seas/waves captured on video, people not aboard would be in shock.
Can't wait for Commodore Tom to write about this. Then maybe our accounts will be believed.

Hi Bear3412, we were on the god forsaken cruise, too. In fact, we're using the 25% discount this month on a stay at WDW. There's no way I'd get DH or DSIL on another Disney cruise after this poor performance by the captain on the Fantasy. It was simply the scariest night of my life---and I'm no cruise virgin or a wimp.:rolleyes2

We were on the NYE cruise out of Galveston that others have mentioned. It was our first cruise and not a good introduction to cruising! My 7 year old daughter got seasick and says she never wants to cruise again! My 12 year old son would go again but with medicine! My 15 year old son was the one who got the least sick but he often slept in so it may have affected him less since he was well rested. My husband was sick the days before we docked in Cozumel. He was well enough to go ashore for a few hours to do some shopping and when we returned to the ship, he applied an extra patch that my sister and brother-in-law had. He was fine after that. My sister and I felt fine the first days of the cruise so didn't take any medication. We started feeling bad the last full day of the cruise. I was able to eat breakfast but I just had bread for lunch and was able to watch a show in the afternoon but returned to the cabin throughout the day to lie down. I was able to eat a full dinner but did feel off balance the rest of the cruise. If we cruise again, we will definitely check the weather and medicate before feeling sick so we can fully enjoy the cruise. Once we felt bad, the medicine did not seem to help.

This wasn't on a DCL ship, but for the 2-day crossing of the Drake, we had gale-force winds. The ship was rocking so much laterally that the portholes would show first all sky, then all sea. I didn't have traditional seasickness, but lost my ability to regulate my temperature. I was getting hot and cold, hot and cold, and there wasn't anything to be done. Even in a red hot shower, clutching grimly onto the bar to keep from falling over, I was shivering uncontrollably. But, I would do it all again to see Antarctica like that.

10 days to far out to take any weather forecast seriously.

Yes, there can be rough seas, but the Real Storms at sea, rarely happen.

The DCL vessels are designed to handle the weather and the Masters are excellent at doing their best to get around any really bad weather. In addition the Master will change the roués and port visits as necessary.

Enjoy your Cruise.:thumbsup2

Yup the good ole Sandy Cruise :)

My wife and I, and my family are actually using our 25% for a 7 night Eastern Feb 8th!

It was pretty bad weather but nothing that will stop us from cruising again!

we're sailing in 6 days and both accu-weather & yahoo predicted warm temps in Nassau & castaway cay. Curious as to where you are getting your information.

as to your question we caught tail end of tropical storm once. water sloshing out of the pool that night. I was green before the ship left port only because I packed my seasickness meds. Haven't had to use them since:thumbsup2but they now make the journey in my carry-on bag jik.

We sailed at the end of May to the Bahamas on the Dream and had really rough seas the first night. We were told repeatedly that it was because we were going through the Florida Straits. Many folks, myself included, literally could not walk down the hall way straight. My DH and I both got horribly sick the first night due to all of this motion. We were unable to sit through dinner but our wonderful servers sent it up to us later (not that we could eat it). I wish I had pictures of the waves because they were high and we were on deck 8. The water was sloshing violently in the pools and there was just constant swaying. On another note, we took a 5 night to the Bahamas last year in June and were never affected at all. I would just start taking Bonine a day or so before your cruise.

We sailed out of PC on December 1, 2012. (the day after hurricane season 'ends'). The winds were so bad at one point they were in the upper 60's mph (not knots). The running deck was closed multiple times due to the high winds. So many of the crew were sick. It wasn't just waves, it was such forceful winds blowing the ship. Thankfully, I am not easily sickened by that and enjoyed the movement (as we held onto the walls walking down the corridors). Figured it wouldn't matter if we were drinking as we'd be walking the same as if we had been.
