Please tell me what is so great about Blue Bayou?

Hi! We went to the BB last year for the first time. I have to agree with the PP that the atomsphere is the best thing about it. I paid $30 for a monte cristo sandwich! Kinda shocked me and I honestly wasnt a big fan of it. We didnt have reservations, managed to waltz in there and get a seat mid day.

We've dined at BB several times, but never without a PS. Last week, DS & I split the Monte Cristo, we both enjoyed it, it tastes like a breakfast dish to me ~ (it was hard to finish 1/2 of it, not sharing would be silly for me). DD had the kids Mac 'n' Cheese, we were too stuffed for dessert :( ~ last Dec. we split the Flying Dutchman (it was all we ordered ~ there was not a split plate fee then) We decided next time we go it'll be just for dessert, it's so yummy!

I believe they only charge the "split plate" fee if they actually physically split it (which is usually an entree) onto two different plates. If you order a single dessert that you are planning to share they should bring you an extra fork/spoon, but shouldn't charge you a fee.

The atmosphere there is amazing.

The food is pretty lousy. It's actually the worst place I have eaten at in the entire park, granted Ive never eaten everywhere. But to me, nothing, and I mean NOTHING tops the chili bread bowls inside the Golden Horseshoe.

I love the BB... I think everyone is correct about the atmospher. To me I think you really get the full beauty of the the BB when you sit close or near the water . The last couple of time we went there we sat in the very back right when you enter from the waiting room and tons of traffic were going in and out so we really couldnt enjoy it as much as sitting in the middle or water seat... So now we wait the extra twenty minutes and ask for a water table. As for the food the first time we ate there which was about 5 years ago I thought the food was wonderful. They had two types of prime rib cuts which is what I always get now they have a surf and turf (which is a lobster tail and a slice of prime rib). The last couple of years I found the food to go down a bit in quality not saying its bad, because its still my favorite place to eat in the park, but its not what it used to be and like the previous posts it has become more of a tourist trap, in my opinion.

For us it's the coolest theme restaurant ever. Designed to look like you are eating outside at night by candle and lantern light next to a bayou with fireflies and trees dripping with moss! The food is OK, and priced high, but you are dining in a ride! That is why we do it every time. Plus, in the heat of the day, when you are sweaty and tired, it is dark and cool and relaxing. We usually do the first seating of lunch for that reason.

:lovestruc :thumbsup2 :goodvibes

After a long day in the park it's nice to (a) get out of the noise and (b) not have to trek out of the park to do so. BB has a unique atmosphere and if you're lucky enough to eat there when everyone's well behaved (that means both kids and adults) it doesn't feel like the park at all. The food isn't the best you'll ever have but it's good and the service feels like an actual restaurant instead of a self-service option.

Not something I chose for most trips but now and then it's different and fun.

;) :) :thumbsup2

Thank you! So maybe we should try to go for dessert then...hmmmm.
Are they open all the way from lunch through dinner? Or just specific times.
If I have to cancel for any reason (timing does not end up working out) is this a problem? Do we just call? I am just trying to think what might be a good time to go. I have NO idea if we will have to go back to the hotel for a nap or whatever with my kids etc...or at what time we will be in that part of the park. (and that is even if they still have seating available for that day since it is only a few days away). If I do the PS how long is the wait usually? Are all seats in view of the ride? Do you have to request them etc.?

I dont' know the hours.....hmmm, never thought about it, we usually go for the first lunch seating when we eat there. :) If you want or need to cancel just call them, we had to cancel in Jan, we called 15 min. before we were supposed to check in. LOL They were gracious and the CM helped us rebook for a couple days later. :) That time we had a PS for 12:30, checked in at noon (because we had just disembarked from Pirates) and asked for waterside, the hostess wasn't too nice about that, in fact she was borderline rude but we waited. Got our waterside table about 15-20 min. after our time passed so we did wait a while but that was OK with us, after all we checked in reallllllly early. lol Generally we wait 5-15 min. to be seated after we check in, but again we usually do the 11:30 PS. You can't see the ride from all of the tables, if you want that ask for waterside or the second row from the water. :)

Can one person eat the cookie boat alone or is it too big? Assume the cookie boat was your lunch. ;)

yes, one could. LOL It's big enough that after we eat there the 4 of us share it. :) In fact we normally have trouble finishing it! LOL

Long ago Blue Bayou was the elite 4 star super deluxe place to eat. Normal folks ate at Tony's, Tahitian Terrace, the Pancake house or whatever it is now called, Plaza Inn and the restaurant across the way, and Carnation. Those restaurants were for families and the Blue Bayou was the adult place to eat.

Disney has got rid of every sit down table service place except for Blue Bayou. Blue Bayou also has been demoted down to a run of the mill tourist trap. It once was nice to set there and hear the themed sounds while dining like in a fancy restaurant fine foods. this past weekend I tried twice to get in but they were not taking guests and thus I figure that I am not diva enough for them and they are not good enough for me.

I can get me tri tip at Ariels, chicken at plaza inn, and pizza and the YUMMY Taste Pilot Grill cheddar burgers with them criss cross fries. I am a guest there and treated just as well if not better than that janky old Blue Bayou. This past week I was spoiled rotten, had servers carry my tray, one server cleared a path for me, they treated me like I was family and special. I saved a lot of money and had more fun eating outside of the Blue Bayou.

I see the blue bayou as nothing but a tourist trap and over rated. I burn my food and do not like overly spiced food except for mexican and thai. I hate blackened food.

I need 4 aspirin, a dole whip and some criss cross fries please. Blue Bayou is my bain and hated spot of all of DLR. I HATE AND ABHOR IT. I am not good enough to belong there. I am good enough everywhere else like oom mow mow where they really worried about me getting sick on the pizza, they cared about me.:cloud9:

Oh wow, someone has made their point. :) lol I'm sorry you had a bad experience there as well, we've had nothing but great. Of course everyone is different so I won't argue your experiences or opinions with you. :) What's odd is Pizza Oom Mow Mow was one of the worst places we've eaten and we won't go back there ever....it was gross and the "service" left a LOT to be desired, hence the quotes. :) Now as to the highlighted statement, that's simply not true. Cafe Orleans and Carnation Cafe are both sit down table service restaurants inside DL, my experiences at all 3 have been amazing and exemplary and I wouldn't hesitate to go back. :) As for the Dole Whip, I'll take one please. :)

The atmosphere there is amazing.

The food I've had there has never been lousy, I've always enjoyed my BB meals, sometimes the service has been lacking but the food....... YUM! And really, how can one compare BB to a chili bread bowl?? LOL That just makes no sense. :) It's like apples & oranges....

I agree. I am not sure how you could compare it. We have never had lousy food. In fact, it is my DH's favorite place to eat. That is a lot the atmosphere (nothing compares), but we have always had good food too. They changed the menu a few years ago, and it is much better than it was. I love the chicken - it has never been dry for me. Oh well, to each his own.

The split plate fee applies to entrees (which they do split into two equal portions on two plates) and they give each person their own starter (soup or salad), hence the extra fee to pay for the extra starter course.

No one else has mentioned this, but the bathrooms are the nicest in the park (outside of Club 33) and are always clean.

It's really a restaurant that you have to make reservations for ahead of time, especially if you're trying to go on the weekend (ie don't expect to get in if you walk up midday on a busy Saturday during a peak season). I've always been able to get 11:30 am reservations when I've called 60 days before.

People have posted recently that now when the split the plate they don't give you extra sides. I don't know one way or the other. :confused3

I've heard this too, but when we ate there in Jan. the table next to us shared and they both received starters. One had the soup, one had the salad, I remember because they shared them. I thought it was funny because DBF and I shared our starters too. :)

Well Im born and raised in Phoenix, I like my food to have a little kick to it. :thumbsup2

Well, I'm born and raised in Idaho and I like mine to have a kick to it too :rotfl: but I would never compare the food at BB to chili. :rotfl: I get liking the chili, but I don't get comparing to a steak lunch or dinner.

The sides that arrive with the entree (eg the potatoes and steamed veggies) have always been evenly divided as far as I know (which is still a heavy portion per plate).

I actually love the Blue Bayou, it IS an experience to me. I went there on my birthday and loved every minute of it, their filet mignon and lobster meal was the best I have ever had (I've had my share of this meal for very special occasions). The meat was tender and the lobster was great, the dessert IS too big, but then again I had leftovers so it was ok. The food is really good, the service is great and so to people who complain of it, I am sorry that your experience was bad, but when I went, everything was pleasent. My boyfriend's steak did take a while, but then again he is very finicky about meat. When it took too long for them to cook, they took his meal of the bill and gave us a fastpass. It was one of the best meals I have had. I am not a 'mignon and lobster' kind of girl, but the one they gave me was great.

We also love Blue Bayou...theme, atmosphere, food...all of it:cloud9:

On our last visit to DL we didn't get to eat there...I'm still pouting about that ;)

We're definitely going on our next trip!:woohoo:
