A very good friend of my DD's is in life threatening condition. He was hanging out with friends in the parking lot after having a fun day at work. When one of the girls started to leave, he jumped on her car. The girl wasn't driving very fast at all but when he fell off, he hit his head. He was taken to our local trauma center but had to be life-flighted to a hospital in the city. He's had brain surgery and is in a drug induced coma. They're really not sure if he is going to make it or not.

The girl that was driving is in pretty bad shape (emotionally) herself.

No drugs or drinking were involved.

Kids/young adults sometime think that they're invincible.

What should be a happy and exciting week for DD, has turned out to be a horrible week. She leaves for school this week. She's been looking forward to this week for so long. All that she's talked about for the last 2+ years is going away to school after community college. Now, she's not even sure she wants to go. She feels guilty for leaving. The girl involved in the accident is supposed to be in DD's dorm and the friend was going to help them move in.

:sad1:

That's sad :(

I hope he makes a full recovery

That is awful, I hope he pulls through. I hope that the girl driver doesn't blame herself, this had nothing to do with young drivers but more of a young man doing something incredibly foolish, it wasn't her fault.

I hope the young man recovers from his injuries. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

I think, though, that the thread title doesn't reflect what happened. The driver wasn't at fault, the boy was (unless she continued to drive the car after he jumped on it, in which case they both acted incredibly irresponsibly).

We had a few accidents like this one when I was in school. One of the kids didnt make it.

Prayers to that family!

You're right. I changed it.

This is called car surfing and it's horrible. It doesn't matter how slow the driver is going if/when the surfer slides off, they are going under the car and there is no way to stop in time. :sad1:

Prayers for your DD and her friends.

Just about the same thing happened here a few months ago only this buy was riding in a convertible car, sitting on his knees. They were driving slow in the movie theater parking lot and the driver turned sharply and he fell out and landed on his head. He too was sent by life flight to the best hospital around. He did recover thank goodness, after spending a week in the hospital.

I don't understand why kids do the things that they do. I guess they don't see the danger in it. I hope this young man recovers fully too. I will keep him in my prayers.

The same thing happened to my DH when he was a teenager. The drs. told my inlaws that he would be lucky to make it through the night and if he did he would be paralyzed at best or a vegetable. He was in a coma for over 2 weeks and did have some paralysis issues for a while. He survived obviously and shows absolutely no signs of the injury almost 40 years later.

My prayers to all involved but never give up hope, a full recovery is possible.

I wanted to thank everyone for their prayers and positive thoughts. It does appear that there was more going on (car surfing) than we were orignially told. :sad2: I have told everyone that I know about this in hopes that they will talk to their kids/young adults about how dangerous it is to goof around with car.

We've had a lot of talk about the "choking game" here on the news since 2 children recently died. I wish that they'd also talk about the other stupid things that kids do like car surfing, jumping railroad tracks... like they do with drunk driving.

On a sad note, it doesn't appear as he is going to survive. They removed a section of his brain the night of the accident. He's had more surgery yesterday for blood clots but they had to stop the surgery. They were talking about taking him off of life support when he started breathing on his own. This of course has given my DD a glimmer of hope but my gut tells me that he's not going to make it. :sad1:

Thanks again for your thoughts!

I am so sorry to hear this. Just keep praying. :grouphug:

My heart goes out to everyone involved. How sad. Prayers being sent your way.:hug:

The first patient I ever removed from life support to die was a 16 year old girl who was "car surfing" with her friends. She fell backwards off the car and hit her head on the pavement. If you looked at her in the hospital bed, there didn't appear to be anything wrong with her (other than the obvious tubes, ivs, and montiors). She wasn't banged up at all, but she had hit the back of her head so hard when she fell that it caused bleeding and swelling in her brain that caused her to be brain dead. It was horrific to watch her family come in and say goodbye, her little brother sobbing, her father holding her mother up. SO unecessary. The driver of the car was charged with something, I didn't follow that part of the story, but I'm sure knowing that her reckless driving caused her friend's death is a sentence that will never be lifted.

I am sorry to hear that things are not looking good, what a tragedy. I have two boys and these sorts of things worry me because it's just a split second of bad judgement / showing off.

This happened to my family's pastor's daughter, as well. She survived, but has major mood swings/bursts of anger now. Her personality's changed.
I'll keep him in my thoughts. :grouphug:
