I don't know Janet all that well. She joined our church chior a couple of months ago, but I haven't had the time yet to get to know her. The last time I saw her was at a rehersal last Wednesday. We give prayer requests before each rehersal, and Janet asked that we keep her son Byron in our prayers. Byron was in Iraq, preparing to take part in the offensive in Falluja.
Today, as we prepared to sing for the Sunday morning service, I noticed Janet was not there, so I asked what happened to her. Thats when I found out. Janet was awakened at 2AM this morning by 2 marines at her front door. They had come to tell her that her son Byron was killed in combat yesterday while fighting to liberate Falluja.
Janet and her husband Bill are new members to our church, and we are doing all we can to help them through this horrible time, but I feel so powerless. Still, there is one thing I know that is more powerful than any other resource we have, and that is the power of Prayer. So I am asking for your prayers for Janet, Billl and their remaining son. May God's strength and comfort be with them.
And please say a prayer of thanks for the Bryon's life. You never knew him, but he sacrificed his life so that others could be free. He died for you and for me and for thousands of others he had never met before. At this very moment, there are brave men and women putting their lives on the line for the same cause. Today that risk became a little more personal to me. Godspeed to them all.
May peace come soon.
