Please speak English!!!!!

I posted this in another thread but I think some people on this thread need to read it. There are actually more people (percentage wise) that speak English born in foreign lands today than in the early 1900s. The "problem" is not getting worse it is actually getting better. But I am glad to see that so many people are so tolerant of others that just happened to arrive here after they did. Seriously maybe our official language should be more along the lines of Navajo , if you really want to play the "well I was here first" game.

That's right English has become a world wide common language. So, what language do YOU think everyone in America should learn? We have people here from every country. In Washington we have a huge Asian, Mexican, Russian, East Indian population and the list could go on. I guess we should learn them all.

If I were to go to another country to live, I would expect to learn their language. There are a lot of countries that in order to become citizens require you to take classes and be able to speak the language of their country fluently or no citizenship!

Honestly that "other countries speak English" just doesn't fly. Did you know when you go to doctor and require a interpretor that the doctors office has to pay the interpretor? That is not right!

ETA; Your link doesn't work.

I don't have this problem, but at every drive through, my order is ALWAYS messed up by the teenager that really doesn't want to be there.

ahaha, so very true. I'm patient with people who are learning the language, gotta start somewhere! It's another story if they're making no attempt to learn. But the immigrants I've run into around here, all try very hard to speak the english language.

A few years ago there was a little girl in DS' class (1st grade) and she didn't speak any English, only Spanish. The district started getting her set up in ESL classes and her parents pulled her out of the school. They found out they were the 9th school the family had pulled that at. The family was preventing her from learning English.

There's a new McDonalds on the way home from DH's work, it's in a very upper middle class area - right across the street from the overly expensive 55 and older housing community and golf course. We stopped there a few weeks ago, I ordered an ice tea - no problem. I ask for sugar, she looks at me blank in the face "shhooooogaaaaar?" "Sugar, sucre" (trying French at this point) she had to go get someone to find out what it was I wanted. I get my sugar and head home, only to find out a few minutes later that it wasn't ice tea it was cold coffee. I called the manager and he said they can't read the lables and mixed up the ice tea with the iced coffee mix. YUM.

My thing is learn English, simple as that. Around here there are so many different cultures that you have your choice of 4-5 languages on some ATMs. None of them are French which pisses off my husband to no end. He busted his butt to learn English fluently before moving here, why can't others do it once they are here.

They ARE learning English (while they are working).

They CAN'T become citizens unless they learn the language & learn our history.

If people are serious about stopping illegal immigration, the only way to stop it.... would be to seriously FINE the companies (or individuals) hiring them & / or put the employers in jail. The problem would fix itself in a matter of months.

Blaming the immigrants is myopic (imo).

I didn't read through all of these posts but I wanted to share. DS went to Europe this summer with his German class. His teacher pretty much told them "If you are in a country that speaks German, you will speak German while in that country." I kind of liked that. DS found that most people would help them out if they fumbled, but seemed to really appreciate that they were at least attempting to speak their language.

Funny to see this thread. I had an e-mail this morning from a friend who is a medical transcriptionist. She was mentioning trying to transcribe reports but can't understand what the heck the physician is saying. :earseek: Her company is ready to tell hospitals they work for...if we can't understand the dictation, we're not transcribing it. :earseek:

Is the golf course nice?

French was probably taken off the ATMs after 9/11....replaced it with languages of the "coalition of the willing". (Maybe Polish?)

I hope your husband isn't pissed off too long.....when I'm angry I take a nice walk.

To answer your question, yes we speak English here. I also feel that if we are going to be so restrictive and say you must speak only this language we should all then know American Sign Language.

I think we should as a nation know more than one language. Many other nations do so and they are more competitive in the world market because of this. I feel it is just an extreme superiority complex that we have as a nation.

(I have no idea why the link is not working, it works fine in the other thread so maybe try from there:confused3 )

Some workers - mainly railroad workers and Federal, State and Local government workers - have their own government pensions and don't have to pay Social Security. We pay into railroad retirement instead of social security, we put more in and we also collect more when we retire-you collect your railroad pension at 50 when you retire and then railroad retirement kicks in at 62 and you collect both.

Thanks! :)

So, what are you saying we should learn their language?

I'm sorry, but if work somewhere and you deal with the public you should speak English.

There is a large Russian community in the city where I work. There is also a branch of my bank nearby, but I have stopped going to that bank because every teller is Russian and speaks very limited English...even the signs posted in the bank are in Russian! I have no problem with them providing tellers who speak Russian for their Russian customers, but seriously, they should be bi-lingual, for some of us who speak English.

What I am saying is the idea that nobody speaks English any more (and those that view that as a problem) ,well the ideas is way overblown. I do feel that we should learn other languages in school so we can be competitive in the world market.

We get to a point where we are so unwilling to change. It seems if we study our history we could learn from it.

The place I work more than half the people speak limited english. I always have to ask them to repeat what they have said. I find this very frustrating. I never realized how many people don't speak english in this country.

i was wondering, when you go lowes andthe brochure is english on one side and spanish onthe other side , and then when you go to buy betty crocker cake mix, and other food items, it also is in english and spanish , well call me slow.............but i dont get it...............so if i move to say //////////// france, russia, spain, etc. ........and tell them i only speak english ,will i and everyone else see ENGLISH on their packages, restaurant signs, etc. or would and should i learn their language ??????? i just think it is crazy..................... i just dont get it sorry.

Standing at the subway yesterday I noticed a very strange ad. Typically if there are translations on ads around here they'll be english->spanish. On occasion Portugese. This ad was for gambling addiction and was english -> chinese? (I'm not sure it was chinese as I don't recognise the difference in characters between the many languages) Just thought it was odd. :confused3 I'll think I may have a new hobby: learning to read foreign languages posted at the subway stops. ;)

Maybe, or maybe the parents did not want their daughter in an ESL because they dont teach ENGLISH well enough and would rather have the daughter in an ALL ENGLISH class.

I know when my children(taught them spanish at home first) enrolled in school they wanted to place them in ESL and I objected. School said there was no room in all english classes, I told them to make room and they did. Fact is that the stats of children transitioning from ESL to all ENGLISH is very low, some of the same kids that were in ESL in the first grade back when my daughter was, are still non english speakers going into the 12th grade.

Some feel it is because schools get more funding for the kids labeled ESL, so there is no incentive to teach them english. I guarantee you that if schools got some kind of bounty for every kid transitioned from ESL to ENGLISH they would set all kinds of records.

Hey I have seen "dulce de leche" flavor but never "tres leches" in a betty crocker box.

But this is not a foreign land.

I am very tolerant of people who don't speak English. Until they get angry with me that I don't speak their language.

I haven't seen anyone post about "I was here first".:confused3

That is the problem in my area, they are not generally citizens.

I agree to a point, fine the employers. Of course how are you going to fine the person who hires someone to clean their house, watch their children, mow their lawn, etc. :confused3

They can't? Oh yes they can, doesn't sound like you have been through the immigrations process. I have, I sat through the citizenship ceremony and watched as people could not understand how to get up on the stage to get there certificate, even with hand signals, people in the audience had to yell out in their native language how to freaking go up the right side not the left! They did NOT know basic English, which IS a requirement, but became citizens anyway!

Learn history? OMG that is so funny! They help you with the answer if your not sure!

Your right, I didn't because it did not work.

Please, don't try to tell me how the process works I have been there done that, filled out the paper work, paid the fees only to watch others break the "rules" and get what they wanted anyway.
