Deb, I know it works well at 5:30. :p

Sounds good, Alex, thanks for the heads up, and thanks to Pete for having these boards for us to enjoy.

Does this mean you are a webmaster again, Alex?? :)

Actually 10 isn't that much more expensive on a leased server and the read and write I/O is just so much better.
We've never had a backup on the front end server, basically all the settings are on the database server. If the front end server, really blew up it would about as quick to install the program as to restore a backup so I don't worry about it a lot.
Verio uses Compaq I believe

Thanks a lot Alex!!!

I had just about convinced my wife that I needed a new computer because the DIS was slowing down again. She was this close to believing that it was our computer and not this thingie called a "server". Great. Now I'm stuck for at least another year with my boat anchor computer.

:teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

Seriously, I appreciate all your efforts. I can't tell you how lost I am when the server is misbehaving (or is offline for maintenance).

Tell your wife that since the DIS is getting new servers you have to get a new workstation or they will be out of sync :)

WARNING The following is geek talk and should only be read by those that can handle that!

We currently run on 2 Red Hat Linux based servers. One is for the database and the other server assembles the pages.

The existing front end server is a P-IV 1.2 Ghz with 1 gig of RAM and an 18 Gig 10k SCSI drive.
It will be replaced by a Dual Xeon 3.06 box with 2 gigs of RAM and an 18 Gig 15k SCSI drive

The existing database server is Dual P-III 933's with 1.5 gigs of RAM and 2 18 Gig 10k RPM SCSI drives.
It will be replaced by a Dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz box with 2 gigs of RAM and 5 36 Gig SCSI drives in a RAID 10 array with a hot spare.

As you can see we are making a substantial investment in the boards and I am very hopeful that not only will we be able to support more users but some features such as search will be much more available.

As Oddball (Donald Sutherland) said in Kelly's Hero's, when asked why he wasn't helping to fix his tank.... "I just ride 'em baby, I don't know what makes 'em work." :teeth:

Thanks guys, for all the hard work you put into the DIS :D

Thanks for the info & the geek talk did nothing for me:teeth:

Thanks for the update, Alex. I'm right in the middle of my A+, Network+ training, so that "geek" talk gets me all....ummm....jiggly! :bounce:
SCSI, mirroring, striping, RAID......YeeHaw!

well, the geek talk doesn't say much to me, but my son understood it and said that it was good stuff for us, so here are my thanks to add to the list
