Please read if you enter Weekly Photo Contests!!

It seems that lately there have been some entries that are either bordering on breaking the rules, or just flat out breaking them without any regard. :sad2:

Photo Contest Rules

I understand that most film pictures can be edited for density, color correction, lightened, or darkened in order to produce the best possible print. Therefore, I have no problem with entrants doing the same with their digital photos.

However, I will not allow pictures in which the actual picture has been changed. Such as, adding white puffy clouds and a blue sky to a picture where the sky was dark and grey. Removing things like trashcan or people from the photo, etc. Although these things do make the picture beautiful, they change what the picture actually is.

From now on any photos that have been edited in any way other than what I have stated above will not be entered in the poll.

I thought I would quote the original message, as that seems to have been forgottten. This thread is getting way :offtopic: . I was begining to think refillable mugs, line cutting and poolhopping would get worked in next!

Andromedaslove posted a reminder of the rules set for the contest. As noted by others it is Andromedaslove's contest so Andromedaslove sets the rules. The opening post was not an invitation to debate the rules, whether people like the rules, the merits of processing in your camera or post processing. Some simple rules have been set.

If you want to have a contest with the rules you think are appropriate, set it up! Otherwise lets let this thread die, thank Andromedaslove for running a fun contest, and follow the rules we have been reminded of. I know that I am learning soemthing new with each contest from the great pictures that are being entered.

So everybody gather for a :grouphug: and lets move on!

Ok, I'm off my soapbox now!

Just weighing in here.......

I also repsectfully disagree about about the issues of "out of camera" versus some processing.

For the people who shoot film and have their images scanned, one will rarely get a good quality image without some processing whether it be unsharp mask, contrast addition and even some additional color saturation.

I think I know how to expose an image properly. I only shoot RAW images and they ALL need some kind of post processing. Typically, when I do get it right with the exposure, I still get some tweaks when bring the RAW file into Photoshop CS2. How is that really different than JPEGs out of digital cameras that boost saturation/contrast and sharpening in camera?

I have seen this debate on other sites and it does get a little repetitious.

Should we also ban images that use of Velvia film because it is much more saturated than Kodak Gold? Where does this end?

Honestly, I think a good eye can detect or have a feel for when an image has too much saturation, for whatever reason, but to the inexperienced eye, they may not. So be it....

My suggestion for consideration. No images should should have skies or elements replaced or removed. Editing for sharpness, color correction, white balance, contrast, and saturation are a necessity for anyone scanning a film image and should be allowed for everyone. Cloning or healing for sensor dust spots should be allowed as well.

Yes, this should be fun.

All I am saying is that it would be better to have a set of "rules" that would include most people rather than having everyone set up their own contest and their own rules.

OK.... as many people here have stated.... I am the one who started the photo contest, and I am the one who puts my time and effort into doing all the work. I worked really hard when I started this contest to talk to alot of the people who would be interested in entering and I made the rules as fair as I possibly could, and now I've got people freaking out on both sides of the fence. What is it about the rules I have made that seem so hard to understand?

I have said, for those of you who feel the need to do some editing, that I have no problem with doing some small things that may be needed to correct a picture, lightening, darkening, color correction, etc. Things that could be done while developing film. What I don't want to see is someone taking a crappy picture and using photo editing software to saturate colors, blend the backgrounds, make a grey sky blue, use selective coloring, etc. If the editing changes what the picture actually was to begin with then it is against the rules. What about that seems so daggum unfair??????

I feel that our photographs should be judged based on our ability to take a picture which best represents the subject for that weeks contest, not on our ability to take a crappy picture and edit it into something beautiful. The worst part about all of this.... is the fact that so many of the people who are griping about being able to edit their pictures for the contest don't really need to edit them that much. Their pictures are amazing and stand up on their own because of the fact that they are wonderful photographers and do a great job of representing that weeks subject.

For those of you that are worried that I am gonna let this get to me... don't!! I do have to admit that I am a little flustered, but I'll get over it. I sure as heck ain't gonna stop doing the contests, I have to much daggum fun!!

Also, on another note. From now on I will be posting polls, new contests, etc, at 10pm instead of midnight. I am training for the Disney Marathon next year and it has already gotten so hot here in Florida that I have to get out of the house before 7am to run, otherwise I risk heat stroke. I will make a point over the next couple of weeks to remind everyone of the change.

I can not speak for others but I have not tried to debate the rules or other. They are indeed his rules. My point is that SOME out of camera shots can look too edited and some post processed shots can look very natural.

Andromedaslove's rules are not the issue he has been more than fair and flexible, but anyone that suggests that "straight from camera" should be the new law... well nevermind.

Andromedaslove has done a great job and from what I can tell is just saying to keep it a photo contest not turn it into a editing contest.

EDIT
Andromedaslove replied b4 I finished typing, GOOD LUCK on that marathon.

Honestly I really don't understand why this whole thing has turned into such a big argument. Maybe I'm just not enough of a rebel to want to argue every little thing. Sometimes I like to sit back and just follow the rules. ;)

I'm a lawyer who's now a stay-at-home-mom, so I sometimes feel the need to find some little point to argue and then beat it to death. ;) Honestly, I hadn't given it much thought either until a few weeks ago when the image I would have liked to have entered had been converted to sepia and had a filter applied to it. Not being too sure of the rules, I just posted the unedited color version, but then I saw that other people had posted sepia images, so I've just not been sure exactly what is acceptable post-processing and what isn't.

Actually I did just quit smoking. About a month ago I was running like there was no tomorrow. I ran 3-4 miles 3 days a week, and then on Saturdays I was running a long run of up to 8 miles. Then my DH and I got REALLY sick. At first I thought it was just a cold, but it lasted for 3 weeks. Finally we went to the doctor who took some chest xrays and told us that we both had bronchitis, which really wasn't a big deal. When you've smoked for 13 years you get used to having bronchitis quite a bit!! The problem was that when she looked at my xrays she saw some sort of "density" that she couldn't identify and she couldn't tell me wether it was in my lung or my breast. She had me take another xray a few days later where they finally decided that it was just a shadow of some sort. In the meantime though it scared the mess outta me. I have two boys, and all I could think about was that some stupid mistake I had been making might leave them without a Mom. :guilty: I quit smoking and haven't looked back since. :teeth:

Not me. I bought Paint Shop Pro X, largely based on both your comments and recommendations and the terrific price I got it for - $30 after mail-in rebate! :)

And thanks so much andromedaslove for the contests! I love them!

:rotfl2: My DIS name is Disneyfreak92. The "PrincessLynda" is from Virtual Magic Kingdom, the online Disney game (The boards for it are right below the photography boards here on DIS.) I couldn't use Disneyfreak92 as my name in the game, so...I respond to many names. :)

And yes, MICKEY88, I love Paint Shop! Couldn't be happier! I just need more time to play and learn. :)

I'm sorry it took a scare like that to get you to quit, but I bet it'll be worth it in the long run. No pun intended, of course. Congratulations!

It is time to get back to the contest guys. If you don't like the rules that have been set then I'd suggest join another competition. :)

I think Dana is doing a great job in organising and running the photo competitions :)

I'm especially enjoying entering every week because it's given me the chance to look through 4 trips worth of photos, both film and digital looking for suitable pictures to match the themes :)

In my eyes, the subject matter of the photograph, the interpretation of the theme and the emotion that it creates in the viewer is far more important than it's 'photographic quality', or the equipment used to create the photo.
Nobody ever asks what type of pen (or quill?) Shakespear used to create such creative stories :)
