Thanks! Maybe I'll feel like showing up more here again.

OK, my paranoia is coming out and I'm concerned that some of my posts on political threads may fall within the definition of sarcastic. [/I]

Messages that are argumentative in nature would apply to every political post wouldn't it?
Sure, posters can argue the strength of 'their' choice, but not a day goes by without someone saying "So and so is a moron and you're an unthinking idiot for supporting him."
Why not just ask for no political threads?

I don't think Alex is referring to political threads.
Political threads by their very nature are meant for debate. I think the problem is not the debates, as long as they remain civil. People don't have to agree on all things all the time, but there are ways to do it in a friendly way.
There are a number of people who I disagree with politically that I like a lot here. I don't judge them because of their politics. They are nice people and they have their opinions, I have mine and we all respect each other.
I think the real problem here is NOT the debates. It's the people who attack folks who are just trying to vent/seek advice, post a picture of their kids achievements etc. These posts have nothing to do with politics. They just have everything to do with people being mean.

Now see, up until a month or so I might agree with you. Lately, however, I have seen some of the nastiest posts I've ever seen in all my DISing history right on the political posts. Just the other day I gave my opinion of Michael Moore's film, just my opinion, no attacks on anyone else for their opinion, and was met with a barrage of insults and attacks on my intelligence and character. This is unacceptable. True debate exists when ideas are attacked, not the character of the people doing the debating. I don't think the mods/WMs should overlook the political threads just because they are more heated by nature -- I think they should keep a closer look and weed out those who are unable to discuss without resorting to personal attack.

Really? You don't consider one poster calling another, "hopelessly stupid", stating that people who share my opinion couldn't possibly be a "thinking person" and that I'm "full of Kool Aid" for having that opinion a personal attack?Wow.

I consider a statement like "Bush is an idiot and those who support him need psychiatric intervention" a personal attack when used in retaliation during debate, yes, even if its not specifically saying "poster A, Bush is an idiot and you are in need of psychiatric intervention for supporting him". Anyway you spin it, the poster is saying only their way of thinking is acceptable, anything less is not worthy.
