What about posts that disagree with the OP?

For example: Betty Sue posts, "I can't believe this happened to me, did I do the right thing?"

People post helpful, honest, non-harrassing advice. Betty Sue doesn't like the responses she gets because she really didn't mean "did I do the right thing" after all, and complains people are attacking her.

Will the people that disagreed with her be in violation of the rules, since Betty Sue got upset?

The key thought in the guideline Alex has posted is this:

Messages that are argumentative or sarcastic in nature will be deleted without discussion.

Advice, debate, disagreements, differences in opinions- all of those are, and always have been, okay.

In your example, where the advice is sincere and respectful but then the OP takes offense... there's no violation of the rules unless the posts become argumentative or sarcastic.

We can disagree. Just don't be mean about it.

:D

Thank you Alex et. al.

But does this mean I can't be the Ultimate Armchair Moderator anymore? :)

Good question, and I think I have the answer.

If you feel that Betty Sue is not handling her situation correctly, you can say so. Just be sure to use appropriate language and tone. It's when you say something like, "Well, Betty Sue, to be frank, I think that the dumbest thing you could have said and the most idiotic thing any parent would do in that situation," that things approach and cross the "insult" line in the sand.

Bless you Alex!

To all - please, please surpress your desire to reply to one of these "mean" posts (and start an online argument over it) and just hit the "report to moderator" button instead.

There are some days I just don't want to play here, as it gets to controversial and I feel sorry it has forced some to leave our Dis boards.

I agree to disagree to disagree but some manners and niceness is always great. A person is not an idiot because they do not think the same way as you. Now if I could my dh to undersatand this it would be great. ;)

::yes:: ITA

OK, my paranoia is coming out and I'm concerned that some of my posts on political threads may fall within the definition of sarcastic. I really do attempt to keep my replies civil and not any kind of attack, personal or otherwise, of the original or other posters. Unfortunately, I fear these did at times verge on being sarcastic. As such, I'll make this pledge:

On my honor as a responsible member of the DIS boards, I will do my duty to poster and moderator alike and refrain from responding to any posts that "raise my hackles", so help me Goddess.

I had been looking for a post from last week and I could not find it. Now I think I know what happened to it. Good. It was not a nice one and I felt bad for not taking some sort of action when I first came upon it. Thanks. I hope the warning alone will be enough to keep things more civil.

Messages that are argumentative in nature would apply to every political post wouldn't it?

Sure, posters can argue the strength of 'their' choice, but not a day goes by without someone saying "So and so is a moron and you're an unthinking idiot for supporting him."

Why not just ask for no political threads?

You got it !Thanks, this has been some crazy ,and scarey couple of months!

LisaZoe, we are aware the political threads can get a little heated. There will be a LITTLE more tolerance there then on a thread where someone is posting about their life and they get attacked. There's a big difference IMHO
