Please join me in celebrating my 50th Birthday...Deluxe Style! FINALLY COMPLETE

After our lunch at Sanaa, we decided to hop on the bus to Epcot (stopping at Animal Kingdom Lodge – Jambo House first) so that we could continue our…

DRINKING (AND EATING) AROUND THE WORLD–PART II

This time we decided to begin on the other side of World Showcase. We skipped Canada, as we thought we might wait and have our drink there sometime when Off Kilter (my favorite live entertainment at Epcot) was performing. So our first stop was in the United Kingdom. It had started raining so we decided to go into the Rose & Crown Pub for our drink.

IMG_4777.jpg

Since we couldn’t decide which kind of beer to order, we ending up getting this…

IMG_4672.jpg

Imperial Sampler

At only $11 (plus tax & tip), this was a great deal and we really enjoyed trying all the different beers. I’m not much of a beer drinker so my favorite was the Strongbow Cider, but all of these beers were quite drinkable for me (with the possible exception of the Guinness). On our last trip I had tried the Woodpecker Cider here and didn’t like it (tasted like a weird ginger ale to me :confused3), so I was pleasantly surprised with the Strongbow Cider. I really enjoyed this and look forward to having it again sometime.

OOP cost - $11.72 (plus tip)
Points earned - 15

When the rain finally let up, we made our way to France. I decided that after drinking all that beer, we should have a little food and where better to get a snack then the bakery in France. :thumbsup2 So I got in line at Boulangerie Patisserie (which as usual the line was out the door, but thankfully moves pretty fast) and once inside was tempted by the many wonderful pastries displayed in their glass cases. But nothing was tempting enough to sway me away from getting my favorite….

Napoleon from France and Casablanca Coffee from Morocco

:worship::worship::worship::worship::worship:

Ahhh, my napoleon…How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

Ummm sorry :lmao:, moving on now to Morocco. DD decided she wanted some baklava for her afternoon snack. Inside the Tangierine Café we asked at the coffee/pastry bar (located in the back) if we could get a piece of baklava for a snack credit and sadly were told we could not. :sad2: DD decided she didn’t want it bad enough to pay cash for it, so instead we decided to get coffee here to have with my napoleon. But of course we didn’t get just ordinary coffee; we got coffee with a kick to it. ;) They have a few different choices for flavored liqueurs here. We chose the Casablanca Coffee, which had vanilla liqueur added. I didn’t like this at all, as the alcohol taste was way too strong, so DD had this pretty much to herself. But I was perfectly content to just have my napoleon…sooooo delicious!!! :lovestruc

OOP cost - $7.45
1 snack credit used (Value approx. $4), 9 more to go
Points Earned – 20

That was as far as we got on this second day of our Drinking (& Eating) Around the World, so here were our totals.

GAME TOTALS FOR DAY 2

OOP Cost - $19.17 (plus tip)
1 Snack Credit Used
Points earned – 35 + 50 for Meal at La Hacienda

NEXT UP: Dinner at La Hacienda

We decided to start this day at Magic Kingdom and arrived early enough to see the opening ceremony/show.

IMG_4889.jpg

After riding a few of our favorite rides, we decided we needed a little breakfast snack to hold us over until our early lunch. We headed toward Main Street Bakery, but on our way through Liberty Square we walked by Sleepy Hollow. Now oddly enough, in all the times that we have been to Magic Kingdom, not once have we ever gotten anything to eat/drink from Sleepy Hollow. I had seen many pictures of their food offerings here on the DIS and had thought they looked delicious…especially the waffles and funnel cakes. So I suggested that we skip the bakery (which I’m sure had a very long line at this time of the morning) and we got in the very short line (only one person ahead of us) at Sleepy Hollow. I told DD about their waffles and funnel cakes and let her decide which of the two to get for us to share. She chose the funnel cake, along with an Iced Cappuccino.

IMG_4890.jpg

Funnel Cake dusted with Powdered Sugar and an Iced Cappuccino from Sleepy Hollow

The funnel cake was delicious, but with all that powdered sugar it was very messy to eat. DD made fun of me when after a few bites, in an attempt to keep my clothes clean, I took a napkin and tucked it into my shirt underneath my chin. :lmao: As for the Iced Cappuccino, there seemed to be more cream than coffee in it. This was fine with me, but DD didn’t like it…she likes her coffee drinks much stronger. ;)

2 snack credits use (Value approx. $8.75), 10 more to go

NEXT UP: Lunch at Sanaa

My brother will cross the park after eating a large meal for this funnel cake & I'm a huge fan of the simple rootbeer floats. :goodvibes I'm gonna have to try this funnel cake. I recently had one @ a carnival near home & it was sooo good. I gave in to this fried food. Oh well, life is short. Eat FUNNEL CAKE!!! :hmghost: Reviews are very entertaining!!;)

I just want to add what a great deal on the 5 beer choices my husband will LOVE that & I LOVE the wine passport! Wayy less money than what we spent last time! Thanks for posting that. I wonder if they'd pour the beer as you finish. I don't like warm beer. Would you know? & Do you know if we both wanted the Rosa in Italy if we could sub & get 2 rosa??

Soon it was time to head toward the other side of World Showcase for our 7:15 reservation for…

Dinner at LA HACIENDA de SAN ANGEL

IMG_4787.jpg

THE SHORT VERSION

Highlights – Candlelit dessert and Serenaded with Mexican Birthday Song, Margaritas, Tilapia, Very Good Service

Disappointments – Table Location, Pollo al Pastor

Would We Return? – Yes

THE LONG VERSION

In case there is anyone that is not familiar with Epcot’s newest sit-down restaurant (opened in Fall ’10), it is located along the water in the Mexico area of World Showcase.

IMG_4783.jpg

I first dined here last November with my DH and we had asked if we could wait to be seated at a table by a window. After a wait of nearly hour (which we didn’t mind at all), we were seated at a table close to the window with this great view of Illuminations.

IMG_4102.jpg

This time however, we weren’t quite as lucky. I again asked if we could wait, but this time we were called to be seated after only about a 5 minute wait. Rather than being seated on the right side of the restaurant (closest to the outdoor seating for the counter service restaurant, La Cantina), we were seated this time on the left side, which has an obstructed view (due to the tower and outside landscaping on that side) if you are seated by a window (which we were not). I decided not to say anything since we were seated so early (7:20ish), I figured we would be done with our meal in time to go outside and watch Illuminations.

In case you have never been inside La Hacienda, here is a picture that I took during the day, when the restaurant is not yet open for dining, but is open for seating for customers of La Cantina.

IMG_4583.jpg

Now on to our meal, and starting with one of the best parts of my meal…the margaritas! My favorite margarita from my last trip to Disney World was from this restaurant, so I was excited to have it again. I ordered the Lime Raspberry Margarita which has El Mayor premium silver Tequila, orange liqueur, raspberry, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar syrup served on the rocks with a hibiscus Himalayan salt rim. This was again delicious, but would it be my favorite margarita of this trip? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out. ;) DD prefers her margaritas in the more classic form so that is what she ordered. This had all the same ingredients as mine, with the exception of the raspberry, and was again served on the rocks, but with a different type of salt rim (cactus-lemongrass). The margaritas here are rather expensive, at $12.50, but if you like to have a margarita with your Mexican food (as I do) then these are worth the splurge. :thumbsup2

IMG_4675.jpg

Classic Margarita and Lime Raspberry Margarita

Next came the chips and salsas. There has been much debate here on the boards about these…some saying they are straight out of a bag/jar and others saying they are freshly-made, etc. I don’t really have anything to add here except… they are free, tasted fine, and we pretty much devoured them.

IMG_4679.jpg

Chips and Salsas

For our first appetizer, we shared the Botana, which was a sampling of three traditional Mexican favorites…a chicken tostada, a Chilorio (marinated pork) sope, and a cheese empanada. All three of these were quite good, but if I were forced to choose a favorite it would be the sope, as the marinated pork was very tender and flavorful.

IMG_4680.jpg

The Botana Appetizer

Our second shared appetizer was the Taquiza, which consisted of three tacos…one rib eye with chipotle salsa (DD’s favorite), one roasted chicken with salsa verde, and one Chilorio (marinated pork). Again the pork was my favorite, but we enjoyed them all.

IMG_4681.jpg

The Taquiza Appetizer

So our meal was off to a very good start…would our success continue with the entrees? Let’s find out, shall we. ;)

I took only a quick glance at the entrees on the menu, as I had long ago decided what I wanted to order here, the tilapia. However, when I told DD what I planned to order, she looked up from her menu and gave me the “pouty face”. Yes, you guessed it; she too had picked the tilapia after seeing the somewhat limited choices (only five entrees, if you don’t count the combination platters for 2) on the menu here. And since she had decided at the beginning of our trip that we should always order different things, she didn’t want us both to order the tilapia. Although she said she could order something else (insert sigh and more of the “pouty face”), being the good mother that I am, I took one for the team. So goodbye tilapia and hello chicken. More specifically, the Pollo al Pastor, which was achiote marinated chicken served with roasted vegetables, beans and pineapple relish. Now this sounds really good on paper, doesn’t it? And looks really good too (see pic below). Sadly though, this was not very good. :sad2: The chicken was rather dry and flavorless, so the best part of the dish turned out to be the roasted vegetables, especially the zucchini.

IMG_4684.jpg

Pollo al Pastor (aka Really Dry Chicken)

But of course, the tilapia was outstanding. This was listed on the menu as Pescado a la Talla and was grilled tilapia served with esquites (roasted corn), nopales (cactus leaves), and mango chutney. DD absolutely loved this entrée! And from the taste that I got, I would have to agree…this entrée is a winner. If you like tilapia, then you should definitely give this one a try. :thumbsup2

IMG_4682.jpg

Pescado a la Talla (aka Delicious Tilapia)

Our entrees were served with bowls of Mexican rice and refried beans.

IMG_4686.jpg

Mexican Rice and Refried Beans

And that just leaves dessert. Now since DD had pretty much licked her plate clean, she was too full for dessert. I, on the other hand, was not. So for dessert I chose the Empanada de Manzana, which was a puff pastry filled with sautéed caramel apples, served with dulce de leche ice cream and cajeta (Mexican caramel sauce). This was served to me with a lit candle in honor of my birthday. Also, I was serenaded by our server and several of the other waitstaff with the Mexican version of the Happy Birthday song.

IMG_4690.jpg

Empanada de Manzana (aka Apple Turnover)

This would have been just an “okay” apple turnover had it not been for the delicious Mexican caramel sauce. This gave the dessert a boost into the “good” category and if there had been more of the sauce on the turnover then it may have even reached the “very good” mark.

Anyway, by the time my dessert was served, it was 8:45ish and the tables around us were mostly empty (including one by the window). So I asked our server, Jesus, if we could move to the empty table by the window to eat my dessert and watch the show. He graciously allowed us do this and even moved my dessert, our water glasses, silverware, etc. for us. Just like at our last visit to La Hacienda, the service was again very good here. :thumbsup2

So that concludes our meal at La Hacienda, which was a very good one for DD. And if I had broken the rule and also ordered the tilapia than my meal would have been very good as well. Next time (and I’m sure there will be a next time), all the “pouty faces” in the world will not keep me from ordering the tilapia. I just hope it’s still on the menu. :worried:

Now for the numbers...

Total cost of meal (not including tip and margaritas) – $81.53 (or $40.76 per Dining Plan credit)

And so I can do a DDP vs. TIW Cost Comparison at the end...

Total cost of meal (again not including tip and margaritas) if we had used my
Tables in Wonderland discount of 20% instead of the DDP - $65.22

20% TIW Discount on Margaritas - $5.00

The tilapia looks great! Too bad the chicken wasn't...I wasn't a fan of their shrimp tacos either. If I ever feel like going back, I'll hope that the tilapia is still around.

We are really looking forward to trying La Hacienda in August and DS has been eyeing that tilapia! So glad to hear that it was good! We will probably share the same appetizers as well so again, really happy to hear that everything was good. DH and I will probably split the combo plate so we won't be trying that chicken but I admit it looked good and I do tend to prefer dry to 'wet' chicken. :upsidedow

Sorry to take so long to reply to your question Rox.jea. About 10 days ago DH and DS decided that we should take a family vacation this summer (flying out on July 6th) to Boston and the New England area. That gave me less than 3 weeks to plan a 10 day vacation to an area we had never been before! So while the trip planning this last week has been fun, it has also been very time-consuming and consequently I've had no time to check the DISboards.

Anyway, getting back to your question regarding the wine passport. No, unfortunately you can not make any substitutions. The wines listed on the passport are exactly what you get. Sorry :sad2:

Thank you both for continuing to read and make comments. It's encouraging to know I still have some readers out there. :goodvibes
I'm sorry I haven't had any updates in almost a week (see my above post), but I promise to post my review of our Brown Derby lunch tonight. And I'll try to get a few more reviews in before we leave on the 6th, then I'll finish them up once we return on the 16th.

BTW, GoofySon'sMom, I see you are from Upstate New York. You probably know quite a bit about the New England area. Do you have any tips for me???

Unfortunately, I don't. I visit Boston once or twice a year but just for a weekend mostly to see the Red Sox and we just do the typical tourist stuff. I definitely know more about Disney than my own "neighborhood"!

I was in Boston 2 years ago. It is an expensive city, but lots of historical places to visit. I rode a bus around that you could get off at certain stops for as long as you wanted. That was nice.

IMG_0221-1.jpg

Today we went to Hollywood Studios. After riding Toy Story Mania, we ventured over to the Star Tours ride to see if they might again be having a soft opening (I’d heard they had had their very first soft opening day for the new, improved version of this ride the day before, in the afternoon of May 14th). Although the CMs working in the area would not confirm that the ride would be opening, there was much activity in the area of the ride so we figured there was a good chance that it would be and joined the small line. We waited about 1/2 hour (as the line behind us continued to build) and then the ride did in fact open! :cool1:

DD and I both enjoyed this very much and thought it was much better than the previous version. When leaving we noticed that they also had the fast pass machines open, so grabbed passes so that we could ride again later. After a few more rides, it was then time for our 11:30 reservation for…

Lunch at THE HOLLYWOOD BROWN DERBY

THE SHORT VERSION

Highlights – Birthday Card (with our pictures) & Complimentary Dessert, Cocktails, Pork Chop, Excellent Service

Disappointments – Crab cake, Cobb salad

Would We Return? – Probably

THE LONG VERSION

Since our reservation was for 11:30 we got to see the opening ceremony for the restaurant. They had chosen a guest who was celebrating her birthday to cut the ribbon and walk down the red carpet.

IMG_4705-2.jpg

Once she and her husband had been seated they began seating the rest of the guests, including DD and me. Here is a picture of the still-empty restaurant…

IMG_4706-2.jpg

Our server, Darrin, soon introduced himself and took our drink orders. We both decided to order a cocktail, as there were several on the menu that caught our eye. We chose the Cheryl’s Peach Tree Punch, which was Vodka, Peach Schnapps, Orange Juice, Grenadine and a splash of Sprite for $9.50. So if you like Fuzzy Navels, then I think you will like this drink. :thumbsup2
I don’t know who Cheryl is, but we really liked her punch! :lmao:

For our other cocktail, we chose the Celebrity Status for $8.50. This was Kahlúa, Vodka, and Half & Half with a splash of Coca-Cola. If you like Kahlúa drinks (especially White Russians), then I think you will like this one. :thumbsup2 We both liked these two drinks equally, so decided to share them.

IMG_4712-1.jpg

Cheryl's Peach Tree Punch and Celebrity Status

About this time, our server came to our table with a camera and asked if he could take our picture. He later then presented me with a birthday card which included two of the pictures he had taken. I thought this was really nice. :)

Anyway getting back to the food now, we were brought a basket of rolls which were warm and quite good.

IMG_4710.jpg

We had decided to pay for this meal OOP, as I really wanted to try the Cobb Salad (never have in my previous two or three times here) but thought it would be too much food if I had it as an appetizer in addition to an entrée and dessert with the DeLuxe Dining Plan.

So for our shared appetizer, we chose the Blue Lump Crab Cake with Potato Crust, Green Cabbage Slaw, Cognac -Mustard Sauce, and Rémoulade. This was good, but IMHO paled in comparison to the crab cake at the Flying Fish Café.

IMG_4715-1.jpg

Blue Lump Crab Cake with Potato Crust

For her entrée, DD had the Sterling Silver Pork Chop topped with Smoked Gouda and Apricot Preserve served over Napa Cabbage, Bacon, and Potato Hash with Apple Cider Jus. She liked this alot and gave it very good marks in her dining review notes.

IMG_4718.jpg

Sterling Silver Pork Chop

For my entrée, I followed through with my plan to try their signature Cobb Salad. This consisted of Finely-chopped Greens, Turkey Breast, Bacon, Egg, Tomatoes, Crumbled Blue Cheese, Avocado, Chives, and Cobb Dressing.

IMG_4716-1.jpg

The Famous Cobb Salad (before mixing)

When ordering, our server asked if I wanted my salad mixed and if I wanted the dressing mixed with the salad or served on the side. I chose to have them mix it for me and to include the dressing. Another server, other than Darrin, came to our table to mix the salad.

IMG_0222.jpg

Cobb Salad being mixed

And then...

IMG_4717-1.jpg

The Famous Cobb Salad (after mixing)

Although the salad was good, it was a little “too wet” (too much dressing) and I wished I had chosen to have the dressing served on the side. IMHO, as far as Cobb salads go, this was just good, not great. In fact, I’d have to say that I like the Southwestern Cobb salad at Chili’s better than this one. :confused3
However, I might try this again sometime with the dressing on the side, which might change my opinion.

I had had thoughts of trying the famous Brown Derby Grapefruit Cake for dessert, but when it came time to order it we decided we were too full for dessert. But that didn’t stop us from devouring this delicious chocolate mousse dessert that they brought me for my birthday. I don’t see anything like this listed on their dessert menu so it must be something they serve only for guests celebrating birthdays, etc. :guilty:

IMG_4721.jpg

Complimentary Chocolate Mousse Dessert

I have one last thing to add regarding this meal. From start to finish we had excellent service here from Darrin and the various other waitstaff (our salad tosser, etc.) They made us feel like we were actually Hollywood stars. On this trip, there was only one other Signature meal (still yet to come) where we received this level of service. Stay tuned to find out where. ;)

So all in all, we had a pretty good meal at the Brown Derby. There were a few minor disappointments, such as the Cobb salad but I think that if I order the dressing on the side next time that might remedy the situation. Which brings to mind a scene from one of my favorite movies, When Harry Met Sally.

Scene: Sally placing her order at a restaurant

Sally: I'd like the chef salad please with oil and vinegar on the side, and the apple pie a la mode.
Waitress: Chef and apple a la mode.
Sally: But I'd like the pie heated, and I don't want the ice cream on top. I want it on the side, and I'd like strawberry instead of vanilla if you have it. If not, then no ice cream, just whipped cream, but only if it's real. If it's out of the can, then nothing.
Waitress: Not even the pie?
Sally: No, just the pie, but then not heated.

I really love that movie…so many great lines and scenes! :rotfl:

Well, as they say in Hollywood, That’s a wrap!

So here are the numbers…

Total OOP cost of meal (including 18% TIW required gratuity plus a little extra) – $82.00

20% TIW Discount on meal - $15.60

NEXT UP: Snacks from the Writer’s Shop

Good review of Brown Derby. It used to be my 4th favorite signature, but it's recently dropped to #8 (only ahead of Citricos). I'm a Cobb salad fan, and I like the one at HBD with dressing on the side, but I had a salmon entree there that wasn't amazing.

I liked your comments on the ribbon cutting ceremony and the service at Brown Derby - the old Hollywood touches are wonderful!

Unfortunately, I don't. I visit Boston once or twice a year but just for a weekend mostly to see the Red Sox and we just do the typical tourist stuff. I definitely know more about Disney than my own "neighborhood"!

I'm the same way. I know way more about Disney World than I do about Chicago, a city in my own state. :lmao: I've been to downtown Chicago several times, but I wouldn't be able to give anyone directions, give them advice on where to eat, or tell them which hotels are good, etc. :confused3 Now if they asked me those same questions about Disney...:rotfl:

I was in Boston 2 years ago. It is an expensive city, but lots of historical places to visit. I rode a bus around that you could get off at certain stops for as long as you wanted. That was nice.

Was that the trolley? I think I remember reading something about a trolley that you can get on/off while seeing the sights. We will only be in downtown Boston for two of our 10 days and plan to walk and see all the historical sites on the Freedom Trail, which is 2.5 miles long (kind of like walking around Epcot for a full day ) So anyway, that will probably take most or all of one of those days. The 2nd day we are thinking of maybe the Duck Tour and/or the Museum of Art (DD2's request). And you are quite right, from what I've read so far, Boston is a pretty expensive place to visit. Oh well, maybe DH won't complain so much about Disney prices anymore. :thumbsup2

Thanks Donald! :)

Ahhh, yes...Citricos. I too was not impressed with it on my first visit there with my DH last year. But it is so highly regarded here on the boards that I decided to give it another try on this trip. Stay tuned to find out if my opinion of Citricos has changed. ;)

After riding a few more rides, including a second time on Star Tours (which btw, was even better than the first) using our fastpasses, it was mid-afternoon and we were ready to share a snack. We happened to be in the area of the Writer’s Shop (near Sci-Fi Dine In Theater) so we went in to check it out. We had never been inside this place before and were pleasantly surprised to find that it was nice and cool (on a hot day) and very quiet (only a few other people there). And the best part was that they had a large display case full of baked goodies.

IMG_4722.jpg

Just a few of the things available at the Writer's Shop for a snack credit

I sooooo wanted to get one of these Giant Mickey Chocolate Chip Cookies, but sadly they were one of the few things not available for purchase here with a snack credit. :sad1:

IMG_4723.jpg

Mickey Giant Cookie

Then I spotted the Carrot Cake Cookie, which I’d heard about here on the boards, and happily we were able to use a snack credit for it. We also got an Iced Latte, again for a snack credit, to have with it.

IMG_4724.jpg

Iced Latte and Carrot Cake Cookie

Just in case you are not already familiar with it, the Carrot Cake Cookie has two soft carrot cake-like cookies with a layer of cream cheese frosting sandwiched in between. This was quite good but very filling and the two of us couldn’t finish it.

IMG_4725.jpg

Carrot Cake Cookie (inside view)

This place was a great find for us! It would definitely be a good place to have breakfast in the morning, as I’m sure it would be much less crowded here (being more off the beaten path) than at Starring Rolls. In addition to a wide variety of muffins and cookies, they had cinnamon rolls and other pastries (most of them available for a snack credit). For drinks, besides regular coffee, they had hot and cold coffee drinks (including cappuccinos, lattes, mochaccinos, etc.), hot chocolate and tea, milk, soda, etc. They don’t have a lot of seating available, but what they do have is inside so that can be a plus when it’s hot or rainy outside. So that concludes my unpaid endorsement for the Writer’s Shop. :lmao:

2 snack credits used (Value approx. $6.50), 7 more to go

NEXT UP: Happy Hour at the Tune In Lounge

We love to go to Writer's Stop for the frozen drinks, the passionfruit mango one is excellent!

Just joined in, great reviews so far. Late Happy Birthday! That's what grabbed me, as I'm in the beginning stages of planning a 59th birthday trip for me and my friend in fall 2012. Anyway, thanks for the reviews. The Writer's Stop is one of my favorite places! I always make sure to have a little quiet time there in the squishy armchair.

Darn! I didn't know they also had frozen drinks too. :sad2: And passionfruit mango sounds delicious. Thanks for the heads up, Nicki! I hope I remember this next time I'm there. ;)

Thanks for the birthday wishes Schmoodle and thanks for joining in! And now that you mentioned it, I do remember seeing the squishy armchair there. :lmao: We sat at a table since it was easier to share the cookie and drink that way, but that armchair did look pretty comfy. :thumbsup2

Love Writers Stop!! Never knew it was there until I found out here on the Dis a couple years back :goodvibes

And the Carrot Cake Cookie :woohoo: I so could eat one right now :worship:
