Do - DD will be 17 in a few weeks. I am desparate for ideas.

What I have already is a "booked appointment for a mani/pedi" the day before prom. This was cheap - it was a groupon!!!

I also have 2 $50 visa cards for her prom hair appointments (she is going to 2 proms, her boyfriend goes to a different school.)

And - as odd as this sounds, we got her season 5 of 7th Heaven. (I don't understand her wanting to see the whole set of series...but she now has 1,2,3 and 4, so #5 was next.) And this was cheap - I got it off ebay.

ETA - And - we got her an itunes card.

I really want a "present" idea now, as opposed to gift cards.

After this...I am just stuck.

My ONLY other idea was to get her a 22" TV/DVD combo. DH is maybe OK with doing a TV, but not a combo. (He swears that combo's suck). I am on the fecne about this - as if we got this for her, it would really be for when she heads off to college in 1.5 years.

DD is pretty well set on all electronics (phone, ipod touch, laptop). She doesn't have a printer, but I do not want 2 printers in the house. So - that might be a good idea next year, just not this year.

If anyone has any ideas- we would appreciate the help. I just don't feel like I have any real gifts.

What about a gift card to her favorite clothing store?
Itunes gift cards?

Special jewelry? Small pearl or diamond studs? A limo for the prom?

We did a nice necklace for Christmas. Can't do a limo for prom. They HAVE to take a bus from school to the prom location. (Apparently 3 kids from last years prom caused this "new rule.")

I forgot...I did get her an itunes card already too. (Thanks for the reminder, I need to move this to the present hiding spot, or I will forget about it!)

Is she a reader? A Kindle would make a great gift!

Also, I gave DD17 that same TV/DVD combo three years ago for Christmas. It's held up fine. Although, a small TV with a separate DVD player would be nice, too. My older daughter had that setup and it traveled to college and first apartment just fine. I too gave it to her a couple of years before she went to college.

The other electronic gift I gave both my girls at 16/17 was a GPS for their cars. It has come in very handy!

Is she going to college in the fall? Maybe some dormy gifts would be a good idea? Like a nice printer/new (twin sized) bedding, a small tv, etc.

DD already has a GPS. And - she isn't going to college for 1.5 years - so not wanting to get bedding etc until closer to college. DH even asked DD today if she wanted a TV or TV/DVD combo - and DD said not now. (That practical girl I raised would prefer to wait to see what her roommate would be bringing. I.e. DD specifically said - if roomie would bring a TV, she should bring a mini fridge etc.)

DD isn't a big reader...thanks to her 3rd grade teacher...so a Kindle or Nook would not be a good idea for her.

So- I'm practically back to square one. I may be leaning now towards a boatload of giftcards (FWIW - one of her sports does SCRIP - so any GC purchased would come from there - and would help offset some of her fees.)

So - now my ideas are:
Marcus - (movies)
Bath and Body Works
Gas Card
Walgreens or Shutterfly (DD would like to print out some of her pics)

She really doesn't need anything for her sports at this time (cross country and synchronized swimming.) She works, so generally if she needs something she will go get it - making this birthday harder.

I guess I would say she has enough. I understand that you want to get her a "gift" but kids LOVE gift cards. Look at it through her eyes, not your eyes. I am sure she will be thrilled with all the gift cards you got her. Think of it this way, it is like getting two gifts in one, the first time when you open the gift card and the second when you go to use it.

How about a nice perfume? I really like Burberry Brit and I'm only a few years older than your daughter.. so maybe she will like that too.

Or go to Sephora and get her a few nice eyeshadow colors (maybe one that will match her prom dress?)

You could get her a keepsake jewelry box, some nice candles for her room (if you allow them in bedrooms), a nice Coach purse (or a Disney Dooney if she likes them!), a nice wallet, a new pair of shoes (any that she's been eyeballing? TOMS shoes are very popular right now- you can order them online or get them from Nordstrom. They're around $50-$60 a pair), a gift basket with body butter and nice soaps, stuff like that!

Edit to add: I think she will probably appreciate something small to open. I know that everyone appreciates gift cards, but I always enjoy ripping open a gift! Even if it's something small, like a nice shampoo or conditioner. It just adds a personal touch.. and that's always appreciated from mom & dad, especially if she's a year away from going off to college. This will be a birthday she's going to remember.

How about some jewelry from Tiffanys? Every girl needs something out of that blue box! :)

I like Kate's perfume idea. My almost 16 year old dd is not into make-up or clothes but loves perfume!

My soon-to-be 17 year old is planning to have a Wizarding Coming of Age party. She's asking for a watch, and she wants me to make Hedwig cupcakes.

I think that's plenty.

I am thinking a nice splurge is a coach purse?? Or fill another type purse with all her favorite make-up items.
