I am having a baby and want to get a new digital camera, but don't know where to begin. I am looking for one that takes good pictures and resonably priced. Does anyone have suggestions. Thanks!

can I cry now? I just wrote you a forever long post & POOF it's gone! I know better than to write without saving these things! AAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

ok - I'm better now - I'll try again (I was finished to & sending it!!)

ok - the short answer is Canon. I've used several & LOVE LOVE LOVE them!

Long answer Canon....Think about what you're needing in a camera(what you're taking pics of - only close range - on the ball field, etc) & a budget to start with. (cause you can find great cameras in all price points nowadays)

There are great review sites where you can see all the specs & compare them (steves digicams is a good one) but your best bet is to handle several to see what's comfortable. Go to Best Buy they are good about having the cameras with batteries in them so you can try them out then do your price checking after you see what you like.

As far as the lines I just bought the SX110 ($200+) & LOVE it. Its a step up for me. Not too large - will fit in my pocket - but looks like I have a growth there - lOL it doesnt' have a viewfinder -so some won't like that - I never use the vf so no problem for me.

My previous 2 cameras were the Power shot "A" series - they were like A110 - something like that. Great little cameras for under $150

My mom & MIL have the step up from mine in the S series $350+/- another great one - I don't like it 'cause its too bulky to tote around. MIL still uses her Elph (another series they make) to keep in her pocket & the only she'll most likely take to WDW.

My bro just bought a used SLR (a Rebel) I think he got the low end one - around $500. He needed the speed & zoom to catch his dd on the college soccer field. I have a friend that also as a Rebel - I think hers is the next level up $800 or so & she sells her pics - but she has all the lenses & such....

If you check out Canon's site they of course have all the specs on there

I have not used a Canon that I didn't like the pictures taken from - of course I take bad pics - but that's user error not camera error.

NOw that I've completely confused you some more :headache:- there's my opinions

OH yea - one other way to see things is check out your scrapbook mags (assuming you have any) & they often have the info on what kind of camera the pic was taken with.

GOOD LUCK!

oh yea - there is a camera board here on the DIS - you can check out their pics - but again have your budget in mind BEFORE seeing their amazing work 'cause many of them are using the higher end cameras (SLRs that are $500+ )

Here's a couple of pics I took with the SX110 - nothing extraordinary - but just wanted you to see a couple....

My intials are on this one - that's what looks strange

I love my Cannon Power Shot. I love it! :cloud9: I don't know what the "number" is, I'll get back to you on that. It has a video option that is really nice. I've switched between photo and video mode. It takes good quality pictures, video, and captures voice well too. Easy to use too. :)

I have a Canon S2 IS (which is now the S3 IS). I LOVE that camera. It has so many wonderful features. BUT I got tired of lugging around a bigger camera and started looking for something smaller. My problem was, I wanted a good optical zoom, and didn't want to spend a ton of money. It didnt' have to be great, just good enough to throw in my purse -- it was going to be my cheap backup and the Canon was going to be my main workhorse.

Found the Pentax Optio Z10 at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-Optio-...FF5M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1250346316&sr=8-1 I got mine for less than $100, but it's still at a reasonable price! It has a 7x optical zoom and takes pictures that rival the Canon's, but best of all I can just slip it in my purse or pocket and take it everywhere with me! Oh, and if you do a little searching around, you can find batteries for it cheap, cheap. I got batteries for 21 cents and they work perfectly.

I've never been this thrilled with a camera in my life, especially for that price. I haven't used my Canon since I got this camera.

Be sure to get as much optical zoom as possible-don't even factor in digital zoom. Be sure the camera has Image Stabilization if you get some nice optical zoom-it'll keep your pictures better focused. Also, get a camera that has video too. That's nice to have right on your camera.

another voter for canon and the S2 or s3 or s5, whatever they are up to now.

but no amount of money spent on a camera will replace proper camera techniques. even my $800 DSLR and a $600 lens will not get the shot by itself.

but DW's $350 S2 has huge optical zoom, IS image stabilization, and most of all - a very short shutter lag (the time from when you press the shutter until the camera takes the picture).

these were taken by my 16 year old nephew:

I agree with luvmyfam444. We just got our canon powershot sd780 today and there is a huge difference between it and my old camera. I can't wait to use it at Disney. I think it was about $220. (Plus it takes really good video.) We also got a Gorillapod for the camera

Okay, my camera is a Cannon Power Shot SD 880 IS, digital ELPH. It's the best one I have had so far. I'm sure I use a small fraction of the capabilities. But it is excellent in my book! :)

Great pictures, Mikeeee!

DisembodiedGwen, what is a gorillapod? Sounds interesting!

I have a Canon SD750 and I love it. It takes great pictures and hasn't broken in the (almost) 3 years I've had it.

(not my picture)
That's a gorillapod. It's basically a bendable tripod. It's pretty awesome.

Yeah it is :cutie: I've always wanted one, but for some reason didn't buy one until now. I figured Disney was a good excuse. We have a red one to match our red camera, but they come in all colors. Amazon is a good place to buy one.

That is neat!!! :) I've been carrying around my user manual trying to get up to speed on taking family portraits myself.:upsidedow I'm sure it will be a lot of trial and error but I think it will be fun too.

I need one of those things!!

Another Canon fan here... My family has owned the S400(very old school),SD400, SD450, SD600, SD750, SD850is and Rebel xT over the years... I don't think I will ever buy a different brand.

Another Canon Rebel XT lover.

It is BIG though. You can't just throw it in your purse like some of the point and shoots, but BOY does it take GREAT pics.:worship:

other brands have great cameras as well. I just don't have the money to buy every one and the time to test them all.

you can get a pocket size camera that takes good pictures

or you can get a mid size that takes really good pictures

or you can lug around a twelve pound DSLR beast and get awesome pics.
