Ok this is my first post on these boards and I need some help. We are planning a trip for Sept. 06 and want to rent points for a 2 bed villa. But Where??? We were pretty set on SSR but from the reviews I've read I'm not so sure. Normally my firt choice would be BCV but when we were eating at Beaches and Cream last Nov I noticed how run down BC and YC were looking. We stayed at AKL and that is gonna be real hard to top but we need the space. I like WL but I don't really care for the decor of the villa's and there were some transportation problems there. OKW would be ok but we read a review concerning a rat and not that is out of the question. SO what to do? 4 adults possibally 6 and a 4 year old.

I say go with SSR, it's beautiful, new, and the buses are not crowded. We went in january with 4 adults a 2 kids in a 2 bedroom and it was great! Don't let those naysayers get you down about SSR (there just jealous that we have something newer and for a longer period of time) LOL...just kidding!!!!! :rotfl:

Use SSR you won't be dissapointed it is really a great resort and nice and close to lots of great dining spots and excellent views of DTD. The rooms are incredible and so it the general layout and decor of the entire resort.

I would love to know who posted the "rat" episode. I've been a DVC member for over 10 years and had over 32 trips which equate to about 355 days at DVC. I have not yet encountered a rat, either in the room, in a restaurant or on the premises. I'm not saying the person didn't see it, but I would highly question it. DVC and WDW are the most clean accommodations I have stayed at. (I would compare their cleanliness to Four Seasons).

If you believe the "rat" story, than you may feel more comfortable staying off premises. Somewhere where there aren't rats.

I'll also add my endorsement for SSR. We had a wonderful time during our first stay!

Generally speaking, you could group the resorts like this:

If you are expecting hotel-style accommodations with interior hallways, bellmen and valet parking, go with BCV, BWV or VWL.

If you want condo-style accommodations with smaller stand-alone buildings and self-parking right outside your door, go with SSR or OKW.

Ok the rat story was on a review of OKW on tripadvisor. I am not foolish to believe that there aren't pests in pretty much any hotel I've stayed in and this one incedent may be very isolated. Rather a resort is new or old, Disney or Non Disney it will have pest problems. My goodness this is Florida, we might even have a gator or two. And please don't ever suggest that I stay "off property". lol I didn't mean to offend the OKW lovers. Sorry :earseek:

A rat?!?!?!? I have stayed at OKW more than 20 times, and while it has a lot of wildlife like bunnies, ducks, squirels, and a lot of birds, I have never seen anything even close to resembling a rat! ALL of the DVC resorts are wonderful and the accommodations are spacious and convenient for that many people. You will have a full kitchen and a laundry in the unit so you wont have to pack as much. tjkraz gave very good descriptions of the basic differences between the resorts. The decision has to be which of those things appeal most to you. Take the complaints about room conditions etc, with a grain of salt. I dare say MOST of the time everything is going to be fine. Besides a complaint here and there over the thousands of DVC rooms available on site is small enough to be negligible. You just hear more about it because we are a vocal groupl here, and we like our "home" to be perfect.

Come on people - its a mouse :earboy2:

We can't tell you which you would like the best. We can tell you what we like about our favorite!! Mine is OKW. It's wide open, relaxed, slower paced. But if you like excitement and lots of theming and activities, go to BWV. VWL are heavily themed and I get a great feeling just walking in the main lobby. BCV is pretty laid back and gorgeous and has SAB. I don't know about SSR because I haven't seen it. The pictures look wonderful and my kids LOVE Downtown Disney. I'm sure we would be at DD every evening if we stayed at SSR. Then we wouldn't have to go over there during the impossibly hot afternoons.

Go to the WDW web site. Look at all the resorts. Choose the one that appeals to you the most. Or be daring and let the kids decide!!

I bet whichever you choose, you'll say "I'm glad we stayed there and not the other ones!"

Thanks everyone. Man mention a rat everyone goes nuts. Really rats are just bigger versions of mice. And remember it all started with a mouse ::MickeyMo . I think we are going with SSR for this trip. I thought about the things we didn't like at our last trip and I don't think any are a concern here. Plus we are park people and gonna be at the parks most of the time anyway. Wouldn't it be nice if Disney built a DVC with monarail access! That would be my choice. Imagine the Villa's at the Comtemporary Resort :crazy2: Anyway thanks.

Send me a PM on this tripadvisor, so I can research this claim.

Thank you.

If it wan't ::MickeyMo maybe it was ::MinnieMo ....did they happen to mention a cute red dress with white polka dots in the "RAT" description? I know that I'm having a very hard time adjusting to my new bifocals. Maybe the person that had this sighting has seen "BIG FOOT" somewhere too??????? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I read that same review on Trip Advisor a while back! I just figured anything is possible, afterall there are LARGE rats at our city park by the river that runs through it...so I wasn't too worried about it, I just figured I would always request TOP FLOOR! :rotfl2:

Thanks to Tinkercubbyfan, I found the report on a "rat" at OKW. It was a persons' opinion. Tripadvisor.com cannot authenticate any of what is said below. I find it odd that even with a "rat" in the room, this person answered "absolutely" to going there again. (!!!????)

We love this place. We have stayed here for 4 years in a row and keep coming back. We have stayed at other Disney resorts and this is our favorite.

We have stayed in either a 1 or 2 bedroom villa each visit and the rooms are huge. The bathroom is huge with plenty of room for a family. I will say the room was not as clean as it has been previous years. There was quite a bit of dust in the room and the carpet was not very clean as well. Every time my 1 1/2 year old would play on the carpet he would be a mess. Usually there is a high chair and a portable crib in the room but I did have to call and ask for them to bring one this year. No big deal. They did so right away.

Be careful. We would leave our patio door open sometimes when we were in the room since the weather was so nice. My husband was on the deck and right next to it was a huge rat it which was injured so it was not moving very fast. I called the front desk and they called pest control to come out and set traps outside our deck. I did not see any after that.

The staff was great. Everyone was friendly and very accommodating. Check in process went very smooth. They let us check in early and worked very hard to get us the room we wanted.

The main pool is great. They added life guards since the last time we visited and it made me feel much more comfortable. They stay at the pool until 7PM every night. They also put in a new waterslide, which was wonderful. It was much bigger than I thought it would be and the whole family loved it. My 5 year old had a blast on it. You can rent life jackets for kids if you need to at Hank's rental, which we did for our 1 1/2 year old.

They have a boat that will take you to Downtown Disney, which was a really nice relaxing ride. We took the boat at least 3 times we were there and the kids enjoyed it. It was very convenient. The Disney bus system is great as well.

The dine-in on-site restaurant "Olivia's" has great food. Price is not too high. We have never had a bad meal at this restaurant and I would highly recommend it.

There is a game room and a playroom for the kids which my 5 year old played in. They had computers, truck and crafts for kids in the playroom and that kept him busy.

I will always stay at Old Key West when I go to Disney. It is very relaxing and there is plenty to do for the whole family.

I asked my husband for a Disney Vacation Club Member ship instead of a ring when we got engaged. It was twice the price of any ring I would have gotten, but it benefits so many more family members.

We almost always stay at the Old Key West resort because the accomodations are larger than any of the other resorts. Even the studio rooms are bigger.

Our last visit was to a One bedroom villa. There is a wonderfully huge jacuzzi that you and your spouse can easily fit in together with a sink and mirror, and a seperate room with toilet and shower with a sink and large mirror. There is also a closet with hangers in the jacuzzi room.

A full washer and dryer unit, laundry basket , iron and board, and even a vacuum cleaner. Just break a glass and you'll be glad it's there.

The bed is a california king. Our whole family could fit in it. It could have better pillows and sheets though. There is a ceiling fan, and plenty of lighting as well as a door to the porch.

The sofa bed in the living room is actually comfortable. Not a mashed up flattened out mattress, like my Mother-in-law has, (sorry Mom). I actually slept soundly on it when I let my Mom use the big bed with the Grandkids.

There is a large TV with a vcr in the Living room and a smaller tv (only) in the bedroom. I wish there were a radio or CD player.

There is a full kitchen with everything from a wine bottle opener to lasagna pan. They used to provided napkins (small kitchen like towels) and placemats but those are gone I'm sorry to say, so I bring my own so I don't feel compelled to steal paper ones from the park. The dishes are nice, Fiesta Wear, and the coffee maker is always a great thing to have in the morning. Buy food at a grocery store though because the food at their pantry is no bargain.

The outdoor porch is wonderful if you ask for the "right" building. The ones near the road can be noisey with traffic. If the pool is a main attraction be sure to ask to be near it, otherwise a walk to it might be out of the question, but there's always the bus. And the pool is great, especially since they added the slide. Don't forget to use the sauna in the lighthouse. It's very relaxing. Also if you plan dinner at Olivia's there are three full showers in the rest room at the pool.

On the non park days this is a great space to hang out. It's a small apartment, which does not feel in anyway like a hotel room (until you look at the phone) ;o) In fact it's a little bigger than some of the holes I've lived in in NYC. And of course a whole lot nicer.

Noise from other guests rooms is limited to stomping feet and shouting children, and usually that only lasts until Mom makes them stop. Otherwise the resort is very quiet. Once we were near a building that was being rennovated, I thought, oh no what kind of nightmare is this going to be? I never heard a hammer or even a shout from the crew. I couldn't believe how quiet they were.

Having praised the rooms let me say this; I know the room turn overs are quick, so the maids miss some dust in the corners, but the bulk of the room is always very clean. I have never found anything unpleasent left behind by the last guest, and with such a large room and so many closets and cupboards I find that impressive.

As expected, the staff are friendly and accomodating. IMy kids love the fact that they talk to them!

As far as value goes, we have recently tried to rent a space that can fit our three bed need, and we just can't do it for our 'annual dues' fee that we use as the standard to compare and get the same high quality relaxing vacation, plus discounts on annual passes. Please, this place is a deal if you're a Disney family!

I can't wait til our next vacation there. It is my home away from home.
